      Thanks! I'm going to minimize the hardware I think so when you open the box you won't even be able to see that there's any kind of hardware there. Maybe it will all be concealed in the lid except for a USB port for power and a mini jack for audio out. I have visions of making a whole range of items that are actually functional items but then are also instruments secretly.

      @@decibelboy83 Poly D is better, in my opinion, in every aspect. MOOG is simply a way overpriced piece of old equipment that belongs in a museum. Poly D took the best of MOOG and upgraded it to a whole new level (not to mention the price)-something MOOG should have done a long time ago. Instead, they decided to cater to snobbish middle-aged fanboys with extra money in their pockets. The policy that shut down the entire MOOG business, IMO.

    Wow what uncanny timing this showed up randomly in my feed. Yesterday I was lamenting not getting involved in music in my late teens (I passed on at least 2 opportunities to get involved in the UK garage scene, I don’t really know why I didn’t do it) and now, nearly 40, getting really back into producing/DJing but at the same time feeling like my time is over. So this is really inspirational to hear this perspective!

      I'm so glad this has resonated with you. I really kinda double checked myself about posting it as it seemed to be a bit of a weird topic, but I've had a couple of comments similar to yours so I'm really glad I did post it. I've been on a two year journey with my mental health which has really heavily impacted what I do musically and where I am right now as stated in this video has definitely come about as a factor of that. All I can say is, if you have any desire at all to do music, then just do it and be truthful to yourself when you do.

      It's something I've thought about for twenty years or so, and now i'm 50...In my early 30s I'd lie awake lamenting that by the time they were my age my hero's had several albums and success under their belts. I also suffered awful stage fright but continued to play, sometimes on small support tours in larger uk venues and abroad, and apart from the camaraderie with fellow band mates generally found myself dreading each night. My motivation was ego driven, longing for success and relevance. Then one day after a short stint of gigs away from my young family having drunk way too much and suffered massive anxiety and paranoia, I thought fk it, I'm done. I still haven't done anything myself of note, but i have a shed studio of sorts and live with the hope that one day soon i'll get started, and it will be for nobody else but me. The music i'd like to make.🤞😎

      Christian what you've written just there is almost exactly what my journey was too. I had started taking being sick to miss rehearsal and then one day just was like why am I even doing music? So I stopped for a solid six months. I then saw a video of someone using the OP1 and that inspired me to get one and from that was birthed a whole new path for me. I began making music purely for the sake of making music with no thought of it being for anyone else. At some point in that journey I realized that I missed playing in a band, but joined a country band playing covers which is just for fun. I'm really happy to have you here.

    As someone who has been struggling with GAS for almost two years now, i finally realized something important about myself. I wasn’t chasing new gear to make music with. I as chasing the dopamine that you get from buying new gear. I thought I was just trying to find the “perfect sampler”, or the perfect all on one device, or the perfect small setup that I can use to achieve all of my musical goals as well as travel and play live with and find inspiration in and finally be happy…. It was that last very last part that I realized was actually concerning. After spending some time examining myself and my feelings as I was browsing reverb for new listings, messaging people on Marketplace and actually driving to go meet someone for a new device, I realized that that’s why I was doing it. It was for those exact moments. The excitement of getting something new, spending a large amount of money on something, the thrill of imagining all the things I could do with these devices, all just to go home and set the on my desk, and just pull out my sp404 or my iPad and going back to working on whatever I was making before I left to go buy the thing. I can’t count how many times i spent over $600 on a device snd only turned it on once or twice and decided it’s not for me, and the n pull up my OfferUp account to post it, often times losing money because I’m in such a hurry to try the next thing that I’ll sell it for cheap just for a quick sale. I did this with Akai Force, mpc Live 2, oxi one sequencer, polyend tracker, just to name a few off top that I can remember. I just wanted to buy things. I was so focused on “finding this perfect device” that I wasn’t paying enough attention in other areas of my life, and this was making me feel depressed, which made me want to buy new gear even more. It became an obsession, and I was hurting financially and emotionally because of it. Honestly, I still have a lot of gear. I’m having a hard time selling gear lately, but I’ve decided to keep only four items, and the rest have to go (this doesn’t include my iPad, keeping that regardless and I use it for many other things as well as music). I’ve serttled on keeping my Deluge because even though I have no idea how to use it yet, it seems like the most well-rounded item I’ve ever owned and I’m looking forward to learning it. Keeping my SP404mk2 because it’s fun, it’s a multi- tool and I know how it works. Keeping my Dirtywave m8 tracker because it’s so portable and powerful. I’m new to trackers and this thing has been blowing my mind since I got it. And I’m keeping my Torso T-1 sequencer. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever used and it’s perfect for live sets, and integrates great with AUM/iOS. THATS IT. I have a lot of gear I need to post today. Sorry for the long comment. The moral of this is that there could be a lot more going on outside of just wanting to find the best piece of gear. I’m really depressed and I didn’t realize it and I was using gas to help myself feel better, so I thought at least. I’m trying to spend more time focusing on the relationships that I care about in my life, working towards my goals at work and spending more time outside. I feel like GAS has so many more indirect symptoms and consequences for people who probably don’t even realize it, and I encourage anyone struggling with it to take a deeper look and see what else might be going on with you. Hopefully nothing, but it is a possibility so just something I think about! Sorry for the rant, and I’m using voice text so hopefully this came across clearly 😅😂

    So I make music with Samplr but I wanted a solid way to control it live but struggled because you can only see one channel at a time. My solution I am rebuilding Samplr inside a reason custom combinator using dr Rex and a launch control which I’ve mimicked on the combinator. So I can compose on the go with Samplr then bring it home transfer into reason which gives me a bit more freedom with effects, multiple pattern variations and still keeps some limitations with the number of controls available on the launch control and the overall 6 channel layout of Samplr. I am having so much fun with it I think the key to these systems as you put it and they’re success is they inherently have limitations which frees you up to concentrate on making music knowing the limitations of the system.

    • @decibelboy83
      @decibelboy83 3 місяці тому

      Yes that last sentence is exactly the hat I was trying to sum up. I think GAS can be seen as the killer of making music though. It becomes more about the collection than what the collection creates.

    The best advice there is for songwriting if your into rock/jazz/country/pop/indie is to 1. learn the guitar 2. learn how to express your feelings through the guitar 3. Try to complete a song as much as you can just with your voice and your guitar 4. Record it and listen to it, as you record it will likely change in structure or direction as you record more instruments and edit 5. Finish the song This works with any type of music even edm, the most important aspect is to let go of hate in your heart and learn to see the beauty in things as this will help with step 2 which might be the most difficult part

    I thought this was a great video that just popped into my feed. I’ve recently sold some gear because of GAS guilt, which is definitely a thing. Great AUM setup too, I’m an avid fan of the iPad for music making, in fact I’ve gone back to it and now contemplating selling more hardware maybe.

    • @decibelboy83
      @decibelboy83 3 місяці тому

      Hey hey! Thanks for leaving a comment I know the GAS guilt well. I've got a Behringer Poly D in a case that I can't see ever using again and I wish it could go to a better home. I also know that at some point I'll really want that Moog sound and then I'll be glad I've still got it. The iPad, well, AUM, fugue machine and some of the rozetta sequencers have been an absolute revelation to me, I can be creative anywhere now and be really inspired within that environment and no one knows that I'm making music. That being said, the thought of playing live with it seems very very boring, so now I'm sort of building a hardware twist on it. It's all a journey and good fun!

    I always liked my casio system, cz-101 and mt-65 in unison for formants or split for bass and lead...drums from volca sample, pads from sa-1. Old system was similar, mt-40 for bass, sk-1 for pads, electribe sample for drums and yamaha cs-01 for lead. So i think 4 instruments ± effect unit + sequencer or daw is enough to do a track.

    Mononoke's pronounced Moe-know-know-kay lol. Its a japanese word, the syllables always make the same sound and are always one consonant followed by one consonant, usually 2 letters, sometimes 3. Its probably a reference to the film princess mononoke

    I have two”systems”: My Maschine daw set up where I have a template that has a few synths samplers and fx aux set up. This keeps my software gear acquisition to a minimum and I don’t get bogged down by too many choices. I make big dreamy space ambient with touches of Berlin school with this set up. My second system is really fun for more experimental ambient: I have a few hardware synths I have displayed on shelves and I choose one and plug it into my SP MKII sampler and samples a bunch of off the grid loops that have their own individual lengths. And do further experimentation with those via resampling and then using the sampler as an instrument to improvise using said samples.etc. So two very different approaches and methods to keep me interested and creatively freed up.

    Great video, some great points.i think there's a balance of having just enough hardware vs going crazy. I must have a dozen different workflows and the only one with a DAW is when I use Korg gadget on my iPad. But when I use it, it works well. I have a flexible setup in my studio where I can plug in Instruments easily and push record on a multitrack recorder. Depending on which sequencer or groove box I'm using or which synths or guitars I want to use for leads that works well, and having a portable multitracker makes it so easy to sometimes record on my couch or sometimes being it up to the studio, but the key thing for me is- if I want a music track that feels inspired- it should never ever feel like "work" to record it. For me, that means I have to stay as far away from a mouse and keyboard as possible. I might use a Gameboy or my iPad to track things out, but I never sit clicking through presets or drum sounds because that just feels icky. As long as your workflow works for you, you like the result and it doesn't feel icky, you're good to go. Right? 😂

      What are the parts of your hardware and names of iPad software if I can ask?

    • @decibelboy83
      @decibelboy83 3 місяці тому

      From the front... The white keyboard is the mellotron micro this plugs into a Behringer 4 channel interface. The two similar size black boxes are the Make Noise 0ctrl and 0 coast. Then feed out via a little device that sells from a.company called Synth UX academy. You build them yourself from a lot and upload your own firmware to it. That's doing all the reverb and delay for the make noise rig. This then feeds out via a Bastle Bestie mixer and then into another two channels on the Behringer. The iPad is running AUM as the host for the plugins. It basically is like a virtual mixer. I have a few Eventide reverb plugins, but mostly use the Blackhole one. Then I use Gauss and Fluss which are made by Bram bros. Both record and playback loops but Gauss is more of a tape looper whereas Fluss is actually a granular instrument. These then feed out via a plugin called Reelbuss which is a tape emulation plugin, but I really abuse it to add noise and make it all sounds a bit more like it's a cassette.

    • @tbadoo
