I'm glad you like the song, and I agree, this one is a lot of fun to play along with. You can probably search for 'trombone straight mute' on Amazon to find some options. Maybe add 'tenor' to the search unless you play bass 'bone. My mute is aluminum, but I painted the front black back when I was playing in a swing band during graduate school to make it look a little cooler.

We (my trombone and I) been through a lot together, ups and downs. Worst down was when it fell off the bleachers during a high school football game and needed significant repair. Best ups were playing a jazz concert with Dizzy Gillespie and another with James Moody while I was in graduate school.

Yes, I first heard this song on the Andy Griffith show. I thought it was The Darlings that performed it. Maybe that was their name on the show, but the Dillards was the group's real name.

@@NeedsMoreBone Your guess is correct, they called themselves the Darlings on the Andy Griffith show, but did concerts and released their music as the Dillards.

Thanks very much! Yes, every trombone player needs to accept that there is a goofy component to the instrument. I remember asking a trumpet player why the trombone section always seemed to be the goofiest section in the band or orchestra. He said "Look at your instrument, it's straight out of Dr. Seuss!"
