    Good video. I think???? Not real sure but you wrap the chain around the anvil as you’ve done but anchor the ends of the chain directly to the stump that’ll help a lot

    Farriers anvils are generally a bit more ringy than other anvils with a heavier waist. I have 3 anvil shaped anvils a 175 london pattern that barely rings now its mounted and has a magnet on it, a double horn anvil at about 225lb that rings like a churchbell even with magnets because its narrow waisted and has long horns and a 525lb london pattern anvil that doesnt ring much even when its free standing because the waist is so massive, I can make it ring by using the end of the horn but magnets sort that out mostly. Two or more strong magnets is the way to go because the magnetic fields cross over and interfere with each other, nullifying vibration, you can usually stick a lot of magnets to any anvil almost anywhere you want (hardy and pritchel holes taken into account) and they will if strong enough make a lot of difference. I use a chain too because I like a dull thud when I work, those ringing hits set off my ears (Tinnitis is no joke)

    Silicone 100% helps the ring. I find it helps if you set the anvil down while it's wet, but don't tighten it till it fully cures (2 days)

    Another solid video man😎, moving the magnet def helps, In my adventures for mounting I've found the best luck with chain both for noise & stability but have def seen a bar style mount like this many times and almost did same. Keep up the good work, Happy Hammering

      I was amazed how much of a difference moving the magnet under the heel made. I've had it on the side for uears to no avail and I never considered moving it because it blocks my pritchell hole. But, it damps out the ring so much, it's incredible.

  • @brandongraham3509
    @brandongraham3509 6 днів тому

    Thank you for your efforts. I was so happy to see this video come out. I'm also working on mounting my first anvil and thinking of solid but portable stand. I wonder if a gasket material or a thin rubber or leather pad under the anvil may help? I don't think it would significantly affect the rebound or properties. I've also always wondered about protruding rubber dampers on parts of the anvil, similar to the dampers on a compound bow. Again, I'm still setting up so haven't tried it yet. Thanks for the great content!

    • @Phollum
      @Phollum 6 днів тому

      some nice beads of silicone as you mount it is your best bet for underlayment. Chain is another wonderful mounting tool and noise reducer as well w/ many ways to utilize it. And a fat magnet on the horn as mentioned in the video helps a ton

    • @rockingeforge
      @rockingeforge 6 днів тому

      Thanks for watching! As Phollum mention, a beed of silicone would be excellent. But, it would basically glue your anvil down. If you're trying to keep it separable, I'd try using a piece of leather underneath for sure. That said, the magnet under the heel made the biggest difference in reducing the ring, so maybe try getting or moving your magnet around (if you have one already).

    Just like tongs, the material beside/below the joint should transition cleanly and thickly. Here you’ve created a thin cross section below the joint resulting in a weak / bending point.

    • @rockingeforge

    • @rockingeforge
      @rockingeforge 13 днів тому

    • @BryantWalker-m6e
      @BryantWalker-m6e 13 днів тому

      Yep, pretty much. I've heard it said traditional tong making is as much about practicing techniques for various jobs as it is about making a tool. PLUS I own over what WOULD have been a 1,000$ worth of tongs except I made them myself for less than 200$ including forge fuel. 100s of $$ in chisels punches hot cuts fullers hardy tools etc. from old car parts (hardenable pieces) for the price off coal and my time. Only been doing this since about 2020. Oh, and a few of my tongs are custom made for specific work only. I do, you can't buy them. You'll want custom tongs as soon as you try to hold something odd or small

  • @TalRohan
    @TalRohan 13 днів тому

    I like dividers, you can make them super ornate or plain and simple but as long as you get the legs equal lengths and the points come together with a reasonably stiff rivet youre good to go. Theyre also a a good build up to making tongs, A lot of people dive straight into making tongs when these would be a better option. Its daft that you do really need a pair of tongs to make the calipers thanks for sharing

    • @rockingeforge
      @rockingeforge 13 днів тому

    • @creekninja

      I don’t want to sound like that “I know better” kind of guy but uh…. There’s ways to “cheat” your way through. If you know where to get 12 foot bars of good steel, cutting it to about 3 foot pieces is a perfect way to not need tongs until you have about a foot left on each piece. And by then most of that 12 foot bar could have been tongs. And no, you don’t have to buy 12 foot bars but it can be a lot cheaper. What you’re looking for are places like Hudson tool steel, Jant’s, pops knife supply…just to help people out. 😊😊 oh and if you can’t find it there, try getting your hands on a McMaster carr catalog. What don’t they have….

    nice little chisel, you show the worth of a 1x30 machine too which is a nice plus. A bit of advice from experience, if you make the fit to the handle tight but don't wedge it, you will protect your hands from miss hits. leaving the chisel with a simple compression fit allows a little wiggle room so that if your hit is even slightly off center you dont rattle the heck out of your fingers, its not laziness on the part of the old timers its literally trying to save your fingers and wrists from some really jarring shocks. When you see guys like alec steele knock the handle on the anvil to seat the chisel again thats by design ....it also helps not break handles as often Hope that helps Thanks for sharing

The tradeoffs of buying lower quality tongs are looks (which should always come second to function) and they may be lower strength steel and may bend or flex in ways you don't want. But! Don't let price get in the way of getting something that will work for you.

    Nice. I'll start setting aside some small projects like these to have ready gifts for coworkers and acquaintances. Subbed and liked.
