If you Google Luxborough Lake you'll now see that access is possible although not public land. Depends on your hobbies 🙂 There is a fairly solid history on the Embryo Angling web site. It formed in 1976 after the long hot summer and the following floods when the Roding burst its banks. It was dug to extract the gravel needed for M11 construction as some of you have guessed. Originally, it was two lakes which have now joined following erosion of a small spit of land that used to keep them apart. I fished it from around 1980 and it's absurd depth close in and crystal clear water made it a pretty hard venue to do well at. I also snorkeled the main lake as a brave youngster and the stories about the massive depth further out are spot on. Almost cliff like drops underwater and pretty bum puckering to say the least. It went through various hands over the years. Was a windsurfing club in the early days. A later group wanted to back fill it with building rubble from the city and then hand it back as a public space. They proposed to pump out the excess water into the Roding which was fairly eyebrow raising. They also claimed it had no fish stocks to speak of. Needless to say this was utter rubbish and I invited the Environment Agency to go and electrofish the smaller lake to see what they would see. They were unaware it had anything in it. Even in the 90's some of the carp you could spot were massive and there were Bream and Tench shoals that could be in the 100's. Fond memories of the place and the river there 🙂
I just went for a run and planned my route round this lake not knowing it was private. When I got there a chap said "you have to pay to run around the lake", I chuckled but his face stayed straight as anything. I said "is that a joke?"; his face remained straight. I said "oh is it private?", he said yeah, so I chuckled again and said "I'll go back then". It looked beautiful and now I'm very intrigued!

That's not how I see the park. No access to the big house shown.....Repton Park ?
Amazing video! I live in Luxborough Lane and wish there was a way of getting to the lake but the gate is closed! During these times of Coronavirus lockdown it would be great to go there. It looks amazing. Any ideas?
Thanks for the kinds words! It’s a beautiful lake surrounded by mystery and I like you would love to walk around it just once!
I walked it a few times as a kid until I got chased off, wonder what state its in now. Noticed the barbed wire has been upgraded since I used to go. Used to be a lovely area
