Cleaning the fertiliser spreader ready for storage.
Fertiliser can be very acidic and can rust out machinery in a very short time if it’s not cleaned out.
We have finished spreading fertiliser for the year so now it’s time to clean up the machinery.

Putting the sheep in the long paddock

It’s been a tricky year for many farmers in Australia. In the eastern states they have had flooding, in Western Australia we had one of the longest hottest driest summers I can remember. In South Australian they have only just got decent rain, and are still struggling for feed for their stock. Today we go with David while he puts his sheep out in the long paddock to get some feed. a japanese guy, an agricultural scientist, wrote a famous book,,,asking the question / statement you just asked in this video. you asked why do we plant all this clover and lucerne for them when they just love the rough stuff in the long paddock ? The japanese guy riding in a bus back from his trial plots asked, : why are the rice plants growing on the side of the road (that get no care) so vigorous and strong when the plants in my research plots are so weak and fragile in comparison with the best care ? "one straw revolution " was written shortly after by that japanese ag scientist. available free on pdf.

      @brookdalefarm7986 2 дні тому

      Hi Adam, I haven’t herd of that book. I will go and find it. It always seems to be the case that the plants on the road verge grow better than the ones we plant and care for. Thanks from Geoffrey

      @adammac4381 День тому

      Hi Geoffrey, my grazing guide guy,,, (I listen to his podcasts) says your paddocks must become as strong and vigorous as the road verge. That info blows some people away, but if you move your stock every day, or every other day,,, the paddock becomes very lush, very quickly.

  • @adammz08
    @adammz08 5 днів тому

    give up the planting of lucerne and or clover bro,,,they love the rough stuff best,,, they are glorified goats in a way. are you moving them every day or every other day whilst on the home paddocks,,,if so your pastures will transform . sometimes they are better off just browsing saltbush and tagasaste. can you show us some of your leaky weir improvements please ?

    Thank you, Geoffrey, for another interesting video. I have never heard of that machine. On my farm we graded thousands of tonnes of grain by using the natural wind and slowing the auger on the header down, emptying into chaser bin, then repeating the same again into the field bins. By taking care with what l was doing always got the grain in first grade.

    Have you ever considered spraying wood chip tea? Dr. David Johnson is a micro biologist, and he studied for decades how to make the best possible compost from wood chips, and how you can use that compost to extract the micro organisms from it with water so that you can spray the land with it and improve the crop yields. And Dr. Johnson and his wife Dr. Su, also a micro biologist, perfected their system over the years, and they monitored and measured the micro organisms, and they noticed improved crop yields after spraying with their wood chip compost extract, or tea. Their composting method requires very little maintenance once it is setup, it is called the Johnson and Su Bio Reactor, and it requires a minimal amount of materials to set it up. It does take about a year to get a usable product. But from the compost from a single wood chip bio reactor you would be able to extract enough compost tea to spray your entire land. If you can't find it here on YT I will be happy to send you some links to the videos where you can see how they make their wood chip compost and how they extract the microbes from the compost after a year of maturing, and they do it at a large enough scale so that you can spray the extract with the tractor. 👍

      Hi, we have tried compost tea and cow manure tea as a spray. They work well and I would like to do a lot more of it. I have collected most of the bits to make a Jonson Sue bio reactor, but haven’t had time to put it all together yet. There is a big farmer in the eastern Wheatbelt in Western Australia that uses this method. I have been out to their farm to see how they do it. It dose work very well and I hope to be able to do more of it soon. Thanks from Geoffrey

      @@brookdalefarm7986 I am looking forward to see that. Just make sure that you follow the exact instructions from Dr. David Johnson. Many people do their own version, or they take shortcuts, and then they complain afterwards that they did not get the expected result. Dr. Johnson strongly advises people to follow the exact instructions, otherwise it is a lot of work for a poor result. Because the system from Dr. Jognson is not just to compost bio mass for nutrients, but it is designed to get the most amount and most biodivers aerobic micro organisms. If you do it wrong you get less aerobic micro organisms, or in the worst case bad anaerobic organisms and pathogens that are harmful. Another good source of information about making compost and how you can test if your compost is ready to be used is a channel that is called, Transform Compost. That man is a soil scientist and waste management expert. And he shows very simple and cheap DIY methods to test your compost or how you can make aerated compost piles. Very useful information.

    Great job to get done. There was a time when the sale of crutchings would pay for shearing. Now days it doesn’t cover crutching.

      Hi David, I haven’t realised it was ever high enough to cover the cost of shearing, I new it would cover clutching with some profit. With such a small amount it doesn’t even cover the file to take it to the wool buyer. Thanks from Geoffrey

    Great video Geoffrey. Do you have to do anything with that stubble or can you plant the next crop into it ? I remember in years past they used to burn the stubble to get rid of it.

      Hi Thomas, the sheep usually eat all of the pea stubble and most of the oat stubble. I still burn the wheat stubble and sometimes t what’s left of the oat stubble. Thanks from Geoffrey
