      I think you misunderstood. When I said we reconfirm zero at the beginning of the weekend, I just meant at the beginning of this particular weekend. It’s not something we do every week. However, it is good to just reconfirm every now and then. Even with high end and durable optics and mounts, there can be shift during travel, weather, and use. Just visually confirming nothing is out of the ordinary before going out and shooting more expensive ammo will save you time, money, and frustration. Speaking from experience!

    Hmmm, I thought I posted this, but don’t see my comment. Apologies if this is redundant. The last 10% can come from truing your data in the app. I’d switch to G7 and start with a .190 BC for those AAC OTM rounds. From there, waterlines on targets from 300-the end of your super sonic range. Shoot at the waterlines, note difference between what your solver says and what the actual hold was. I generally try and do 3 rounds to confirm im hitting the water line at any given distance. Lastly, adjust your BC to best match your actual data. I’m a proponent of adjusting BC, vs muzzle velocity truing (like in GB) because I can actually measure by velocity every time I shoot, I cannot do the same for my BC. And, as with MV, BCs are not fixed and can change based on several factors. While weather certainly has an effect, it’s surprising how little things change from 50-80 in the same location. My 20” at 800y is 5.96 mils at 90° and 6.24 mils at 50. Certainly not insignificant, but not a huge difference.

      From the research I’ve gathered, you are correct that G1 was designed for a flat based round, where G7 was designed for a boat tail based round, however, the G1 drag model is easier to calculate, therefore is still more widely used for all types of bullets. I agree the barrel and ammo thing but I look at it like this. If 77 is my ammo of choice. Shoot with and stock up on that ammo. But also do some training with 55. Why? 77 is my choice of ammo and is on one end of the spectrum. 55 might be all we can get in a pinch and is better than no ammo and is at the other end of the spectrum. So through experience alone you know your good ammo does X. 55 does Y and the fire everything else will fall somewhere inbetween. I totally agree with setting the gun up for and training with your preferred ammo for the job. 77. But I think it’s valuable to also train with ammo on the other end of the spectrum so 77 and 55 because one is what you want and have. The other is usable ammo and nothing more but might be all you can get (Russia Ukraine. You shoot what you get or manage to buy and get sent in. Which ain’t happening a lot) so having experience consistently training with both and by extension you know that every other random 556 you might find or be given in a shitty situation will fall somewhere in the middle. Especially if this is a hard times go to rifle. As opposed to a comp gun in some niche round that just goes away in hard times cause it ain’t for that. To me that’s very simple and beneficial and offsets cost a bit. Some 77 and some 55.

    • @projectblackhills
      @projectblackhills 2 місяці тому

      We zero with 77gr and shoot all precision and long range with 77gr, but shoot everything else with 55gr. I’ve noticed that generally, the zero from 77gr to shooting 55gr isn’t that much. And 200 yards and in, it’s not going to be enough of a shift to be noticeable.

  • @thomasmarchese2808

    I think that emphasis on “my” gpr is actually really important. I think we get too caught up in is it an spr or a gpr or a. Modern urgis are 14.5s with 1-8 atacr with lpvos. See the problem is that’s GP for infantry and sof. But for civilians an 11.5 with a red dot and magnifier is going to handle pretty much all self defense scenarios within rule of law. Longer shots at animals but we’ll never be shooting at 200+ unless things are really really bad. Then the big guns come out. And then the spr is kind of general. The problem is “gp” is so subjective. It’s general based on the environment and situation you’re in. And I hate “if you can only grab one” because it’s basically asking “what do you think the best set up is to do everything ok but nothing amazingly well.” Which looks different depending on who and where you are. The context is usually put as only one rifle for the end of the world things aren’t going back to normal any time soon post apocalyptic kinda ya know the drill. But what you would choose now may be very different if you’re actually in that situation because what you thought makes sense now wouldn’t then. It’s so subjective and grey

    I think people that say how heavy am SPR or any 13.7 14.5 16 18” 556 precision fighting rifle is, forget the autistic scratching that occurs at the mention of the name mk12 because everyone loves it that’s ever used it. Why? It’s a bit heavier and longer but what you get for the trade off is so much better than lugging around extra weight in gear you don’t need. Excessive gear will out weigh excessive gun, fast. IMO.

    I just found your channel. I watched a few videos. What I have found/figured out about a rifle build. Environment first off. A 14.5 to 16" are your best options. Using a 77 grain green tip. Optics, an ACOP is a good general purpose, I guess you cqn put a red dot on it. AimPoint makes a good cheater LOVP that you don't really need to use the red dot. I thought I liked quad rails, I don't. This was before I found out about cover and such. I do like M lok rails. To each their own. Bells and whisles, lasers, lights, bipods, triggers, slings. Do I add some kind of iron sights? Off set? PMags over metal, do I add those things on the end of my mags, call them grips. For a first-time buyer. Go with a 14.5 or 16" barrel with a Sure fire war comp, get the can as well. An ACOG 4 power or an AIM Point 1x6 LOPV. Just make sure you find the right one. They make 4 or 6 different types/styles. As for the rest, how deep is your pocket. Magpul makes a lot of good accessories so does 100 concepts. Most of all, ask yourself this. Do you buold it, have it built or buy off the shelf? Palmetto arms has some great deals. I like the oil bottle in the grip. All my rifles have it. And milspec buffer tubes. I think I have Timber Creek M Lok rails, never had a problem with them. I do use the Magpul rail covers. Gotta look cool while standing around the range. If you have any questions, just ask.

A Protac HL-X sometimes, I don't do NV. (The Streamlight Protac HL-X and new HL-X Pro are the poor man's outdoor champions). For glass, A 1.7 inch ADM qd titanium lever mount with a Steiner PX4i. 1.5 ADM with a 1-8 Gen2 Vortex Strike Eagle sometimes. 1.5 ADM qd mount with an AGM Adder TS35-640. The Adder is the star of the show. I can identify at 1500 meters on a DDM5V1 I have. All the scopes were bought factory seconds/sales/etc. Anyway, great choices on a real nice gun. Your advice on the Eotech Vudu was a huge part of me leaning towards it. Even at the advice of Brass Facts to steer away. I am quite happy with it. I was in the same situation as you are thinking the dot was too big. I was also under the impression you need all the magnification to shoot a good group. When in actuality you dont. Now you may think this is shooter preference, but it is and it isn't. It's whatever helps make you place a consistent point of aim. Once I realized from others how difficult it is to shoot a gas gun with all the reciprocating mass, I worked on myself and shooting ability. I stopped placing blame on my ammo and barrel (AAC and DD). Shooting good groups at 100 can be difficult. I know your platform is capable of it because I watched your ring that target repeatedly at 530y in that wind. Long story shot, I turned my magnification down to where the dot was the size of the 1" target at 100y or slightly smaller. Then I knew if I couldn't see the dot on target or was just showing enough on each side, it was in the same place EVERY TIME. I have now shot some of the best groups I have ever shot. Groups my bolt gun would be happy to see. 1 time I shot a group where 4/5 went into the same hole. I have also shot many, many sub moa groups now. I stopped the search for better materials to make me a better and focused on my own fundamentals. To each their own. What worked for me might not work for you. I just wanted to share my experience.

      Totally fair criticism on my part with the Vudu. As much as I “dislike” the middle dot on the reticle, I took a step back after we recorded this and realized what you said is true, regardless of effect on the accuracy that the middle dot causes, I’ve still been able to get consistent on target hits on a 10x12 inch plate at 850 yards using the optic. I partially blame my “need” for a more precise reticle on the rabbit hole I’ve gone down that is know as hand loading. Its opened my eyes on how consistent and accurate ammo can and should be. I know I can hit tighter groups with a higher magnification and precise reticle. But at the same time, the diminishing returns in accuracy you get with a 223/556 is probably marginal at best vs something like 6arc/6.5cm. I’ll be sticking with the vudu as well. There no real reason for me to ditch it. Especially on a rifle like this. On an spr 223, a 3-18 or even a 2-20 would definitely be more beneficial in my opinion. I appreciate the comment though. Hopefully our production on these discussions will be going up and released at a higher consistency!

    Just go get an m1a, or an ar10, or a hk91 if this is what you are into. Wont weigh any more and 30 hits harder farther easier

      M1a sucks for accuracy, I’m not paying for an hk91, and the lightest weight ar10 we could build that still had good velocities and groups was over 20 pounds with a can and bipod. This is almost half that weight.
