Please notice that Little Women podcast has it's focus on the book canon. Laurie is partially based on Alcott's ex Laddie Wisniewski and Friedrich on philosopher Henry David Thoreau, who Alcott wanted to marry and the German poet Goethe (her favorite writer). I also firmly believe that Alcott planned the marriages in Little Women, years before she wrote the book, you can read more about that here archiveofourown.org/works/52882897?view_adult=true

As a long-time, die-hard Little Women fan, I LOVE this podcast! I stumbled upon it while doing research for a book series I was working on, and I am addicted! Niina is super knowledgeable in all things LW, from the book(s) to the movies and author Louisa May Alcott’s real life. I love that the discussions are based on the book and highlight the differences (sometimes controversial) between the original and newer adaptations. Highly recommended for anybody who loves getting lost in the world of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March.

I love your Little Women content. Thank you for sharing all your studies and research! I read the book earlier this year for the first time and I fell in love with Jo and Fritz’s relationship. I’m so glad I binged listened to your podcast to further my love for them. It also kickstarted an obsession with LMA too, she’s such an interesting woman and moved around in so many circles.
I can’t believe there are people that still don’t get Jo and Fritz. While reading I found it very obvious that Jo was falling for him even if Jo hadn’t realized it yet herself (I mean the girl didn’t shut up about his hands and how nice he is!). My heart melted at the moment when it says (rephrasing here:) ‘if Jo could’ve seen the Professor kissing the picture of her before going to bed, she would’ve known why he was visiting her hometown’ 😭 I see here Jo’s influence on Friedrich. Being with her and knowing her, encourages him to be more active, take initiative to things unknown, go find answers to his questions, try finding another job for bettering his nephew’s life.

    I’m an English PhD and I’ve done some research on Little Women, and it always feels so frustrating how so many so-called academics just casually brush off Frederich and the Jo/Frederich relationship as “sexless” or “a father figure” with no reference to the books. It’s so lazy and makes me even more impressed that podcasters doing this in their free time can do better analysis than paid, “professional” academics. Keep it up!

    • @littlewomenchannel
      @littlewomenchannel 3 дні тому

      What a nice thing to say :D To my experience there are really only two types of Little Women academics, there are people who truly love the book. They see the connections between LMA and the people in her life (academics such as Christine Doyle, Daniel Shealy). Then there are number of academics who are like Jo should be single and live like 21st century girl boss and be together with Laurie because he only needs to be an accessory and oh yeah Friedrich is not interesting because he is fat and Amy is a bitch. I am very glad more and more people have began to question the last narratives lol. Emily and I are going to do an episode about Friedrich and fatphobia. I don't know yet which season it will be but it is going to be great.

      @@littlewomenchannel I’m glad to hear there are academics who aren’t wedded to that narrative. I was rereading little men the other day, and any academic who reads the line. “ Mr. bear was under the delusion, that Mrs. B was the finest creature in the world.” (paraphrasing) in sticks with the latter narrative has to be pretty biased

      I love how affectionate they are between each other throughout the whole book series, and yes, it seems to me that lot of those people who are very biased, it seems that they haven't even read the book. Or read it when they were kids and just decided to hate Amy and Fritz.

      Are we saying that we believe that Laurie wanted to be a part of the family so bad that he proposed to the eldest sister; not really actually loving her in a romantic sense, but in a sisterly, best friend sense. But he was romantically attracted to Amy?

    Yes, Liz Taylor as Amy in "Little Women" was just sweet and shy; she also looked pretty enough. But, Little Women, the 1949 classic belonged entirely to June Allyson, whose character would make you feel mushy; she was fun, witty, charming, full of mischief and could also make you cry with her heart-wrenching portrayal. She loses the man she loves [Peter Lawford] to that man-grabber Liz Taylor. The rest of the cast included sweet Janet Leigh and Margaret O'Brien. I'm not quite sure, but I do believe that Rosanno Brazzi, played June's love interest in the second half of the film. Mary Astor played the girls' mother in this happy tear-jerker [ I mean happy plus sad]!

    • @littlewomenchannel
      @littlewomenchannel 16 днів тому

      Jo never loved Laurie beside Laurie is based on Alcott's ex, Laddie Wisniewski, Friedrich (Rossano Brazzi's character) is based on philosopher Henry David Thoureau, Louisa May Alcott wanted to marry him. He appears as the love interest in all of her novels. Film makers sadly never include Laurie's full character arc (which in the novel very clearly explains why Jo doesn't want to be with him and why he is meant to be with Amy).

    This one definitely sticks with me as the one that makes it the clearest that Jo feels love for Frederich and nothing but friendship for Laurie. Kudos to the directors and to June Allyson for that coming through. Something I've noticed is that modern adaptations on film seem to be the ones that ship Jo/Laurie, while the older films have no problem with Jo/Frederich. I wonder why that's changed?

I think it really took advantage of its series format and put a lot of details from the book in it that tend to get left out in other adaptations. The casting was great, and I think out of all the actresses who have played Amy in her youth and adulthood, Kathryn Newton is the most convincing, which is very refreshing. Jo seems to naturally get along with Cancers: first Beth, then (arguably) Friedrich. Their "water" and her Sagittarius "fire" create an excellent balance.

      yes, I have also noticed that. I always thought she naturally gravitated towards Fritz, because there was similar aura of calmness that Beth had.

    I wonder what Greta's reason for making the film could have been?

      For me, she wanted just using Little Women to defend her ideological visions about feminism and "feminin empowerment".

    • @littlewomenchannel
      @littlewomenchannel 3 місяці тому

      Oh I agree with that as well. Tbh I don't think she really understands feminism. In so many of her movies, her female characters are obnoxius, and put other women down, she objectifies male characters, and makes mockery of them, even when the male characters behave better than the female characters.

    In the novel, Laurie says himself that Jo and Amy changed roles in his heart. Perhaps he did think he "had to be part of the March family" at first, which made him lean towards Jo, a clearly unsuitable match for him, given both their dispositions. But I do believe that Amy was the right one for him. There was no mistake and no choosing "second best" on his part, in my opinion. He went from a reckless, spoiled boy to a mature, confident man, who knows his true heart.

      Well said. In Louisa May Alcott's copy of Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister" there is a note written by Louisa when Wilhem falls to Natalia, (after his stormy relationship with Mariana), Louisa had written word "beautiful". Wilhelm is very much a Laurie type of character. This note is from the time when Louisa was about 18 (If I remember correctly), so yeah, Louisa planned both Amy and Laurie and Jo and Friedrich relationships, wayy before she even wrote Little Women. Laurie's growth from immature to mature, is the biggest problem in all LW adaptations, the lack of it.

    Honestly, inheriting a big ol house and taking in a bunch of kids to raise sounds like the dream. I'd do the same

      I think Louisa had that idea of aunt leaving her the big house, very early on. It is quite lovely to read her diaries and Louisa's ideas of her own school.

    I like Richard Gilliland''s Laurie more than all the movie Laurie's put together. Why? Because he is like the book Laurie. He is happy one moment. He is sad the next moment. Then he is angry. Happy. Then sad again. Angry. Happy. Sad. Angry. Happy. Sad. Then Amy comes and he finds a balance. Yes, he is my favorite Laurie. The man of moods. For the life of me, I don't understand why Laurie's of the 90's and 00's don't have any temper tantrums, that is the main reason why he and Jo don't work as a couple.

    Do you remember which adaptation, if any, involved Friedrich teaching Jo German? I'm pretty sure at least one of the adaptations that I saw had that, and I can't remember which one.

      At least in the 1978 version, they have German lessons :)

    As a soundtrack aficionado, who has a soft spot for some of Thomas Newman's works, I agree that the score for this film is the best Little Women score.

    Fun fact: The decision to cast Emma Watson as Meg March was a backup plan. Emma Stone was originally cast for the role.

    • @littlewomenchannel
      @littlewomenchannel 4 місяці тому

      I did not know that. I have seen few films of Emma Stone, hard to say what kind of Meg she would have been. I think the problem in this movie is more in the script than in the actors.
