On every hunt there is good work and not so good, this can be the dogs or myself as the Gun/handler. Celebrate the good work and work to do to improve for the next time.

I enjoy this dogs enthusiasm, the way he checks out cover. His second flush was a lovely piece of work. In New Zealand Spaniel Trials it is a credit to a dog that indicates game before going in for a hard flush.

Some reflection. When this run finished, I had my handlers glasses on and felt happy because for the most part he was hunting for me and pegging the rabbit was well, one of those things that happen. On watching the video footage and with my judges glasses on, Owen was all over the place with little semblance of a hunting pattern. I was having to use excessive whistle to keep him in range and hu...

I was privileged to judge a Spaniel Natural Game Trial up in the cold and but beautiful Mackenzie Country on the 13/07/24, this was one of my top runs of the trial. You will notice Tess's pattern change during the run due to a wind change. Flush, shot over and rabbit retrieved filled Tess's card on my side and she was sent over to the other judge for her second run.

You need to hunting with your communist buddy Tim ,I bet he could never hit that rabbit like you did...lol
@@paulscountry456 Tim and you would be welcome to come hunting with me, perhaps on separate occasions🙂.
Stunning that country you have,We have a large farm with phesant, chuker, quail, doves ,cottontail, coyote, deer and elk on occasion..I'm glad your country allows you the freedom to own a firearm friend.
@@paulscountry456 I am privileged to be able to hunt with my dogs. Sounds like you are also privileged, what an amazing abundance of wildlife to enjoy on your farm.
Had to laugh. My Cocker is only 8 months and pretty good, but sometimes he winds me up. When Archie eventually came back, they look very similar to each other!
@@richardstephens8541 Cockers are the best, especially clowns😀
another cracker outing for the Champ.
Did you send him to the shot or the fall ? I prefer never to move them from the first flush stop as it breaks to focus
Trials, ah patience, ah. Ears to hear, it's a day out.
@@petersimon3066 it is a day out😀, he tries my patience but does make me laugh as well at times with his antics.
watching from India
@@princeklate1689 cool thing about UA-cam, you can watch dogs hunting from far away😀
Keep up the great content!
@@collinmiller5372 Thanks, I am glad you enjoy my short videos each week😀
Hi, it's interesting to see the difference between trialling in New Zealand to here in the UK, I've only watched this one run and can only base my opinion on this, but the dogs in the UK have to stay much closer, and cover the ground more methodology, you wouldn't likely be pulled up and told to pop your leader on if a dog pulled that far ahead, i wonder if there are other differences, very interesting thanks for showing this, all the best from the uk
@@dannyboy7289 From what I have watched of the UK trials and I agree with you, our dogs in New Zealand are allowed to hunt a bigger pattern and more freedom is given to allow for the dogs to hunt the wind. In April last year we had Gareth Davies and Des Donelly from the UK over judging and they were quite comfortable judging our dogs, as we were running our dogs under them. Also the Go Pro camera does make things look further away than in reality.
@SpanielshuntingtrialingNZ I know Gareth and Des, I bet they felt it liberating to not have to be so stringent, I'm not a fan of the shoe-polishing dogs we currently have running, it's ruined the labs, they hardly need a nose these days, I ran 45 minutes without a flush last season, holding a dog in a tight pattern, it's exhausting for the dog, I would love to experience running a dog in New Zealand, keep the great videos coming 👍
@@dannyboy7289 open invitation to come to New Zealand to go hunting with me or see our trials😀
@SpanielshuntingtrialingNZ Thanks very much, I may just do that, 😁
Great hunting!
@@KugaeGundogs Glad you enjoyed the video.
would love to bring my cocker along. Bit of a way from blighty though !

Great videography.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
thats some narley terrain yur working in . but you got the "look" from Owen ! Im sure their reward is out there doing it so the odd miss is quickly forgotten. Try telling my duck dog that !!!
Yes the total look Owen "What, how dare you miss" with Archie, "I am sure you didn't miss I am going to have a look anyway"
Is this in Arizona?
Otago, New Zealand 😀
@@SpanielshuntingtrialingNZ wow! I was about 20,000 KM off. I appreciate your quick response! You have beautiful dogs and live in a beautiful part of the world !

Yes he is😀
Hello, excellent dog work. Which camera do you use for you video? Thanks and congrats from northern Italy

Linda caza e visto todos sus videos, a modo de consulta que choke usa para caza del conejo??
Thank you, glad you enjoy the video's. I use a Yildiz 20ga, the chokes are improved cylinder and 1/4 choke.
Linda
Owen is a real cracker , flat out nose down in some really rough terrain and with a huge grin !
This is a cocker in its element. Here in the UK far to many are kept as pets & never get to work like this. So so sad.
@@stevenlord782 It is a privilege to be able to hunt with my Working Cockers, they are bred to do this work and makes for happy times😀
That little cocker is having the best time ever. ❤
@@stevenlord782 Yes both Archie and Owen love hunting rabbits😀.
Your dog seems to be hunting nice and tight now, I felt in some of the previous videos it was ranging too far.did you change something?
Awesome video watching from manchester England, I'm going to be getting a working cocker soon so ita very nice to see how great yours is.
Glad you enjoy my little videos of my dogs hunting for me.
people are always like "your dog is so well trained" they dont know that the dog can be an unresponsive monster :D
That is for sure, this little guy has tested my ability as a trainer😅.
beautiful weather for the middle of winter ! and Owen the energizer bunny is a superstar. really enjoy watching you both work.
Thanks so much!😀
Excellent I’d like to see these cockers working on quail
Gland you enjoyed the video, This Trial was during quail season, sometimes a dog will hunt up and flush quail in a trial but rarely, there just aren't many coveys in the areas we trial in.
@@SpanielshuntingtrialingNZ this in Otago?

No, I live in Aotearoa (New Zealand), a Kiwi 😀

Absolutely fantastic
As the judge, i was happy to see that rabbit come back😀
Great wee cocker
@@SpanielshuntingtrialingNZ I thought it was an excellent retrieve too. Must be good to be judging comps and seeing all those good dogs working.
@@springerspanielhunting yes it is a privilege 😀
Great work from both young dogs there, amazed at how tight that bunny was sitting we weren't that quiet, both dogs actually went past it fairly close, so exciting, thanks for capturing that
Yes it was so much fun to see both dogs succeed😀
great skills , always a pleasure to watch good dogs working. just love that Otago landscape.
Yes I am privileged to hunt and train my dogs in such an amazing place😀
Springers are BIRD dogs! Beagles are RABBIT dogs ....
Depends 😀, in the UK, Springers and Cockers very much hunt both birds and rabbits and the same here in New Zealand
cane meraviglioso 😊.. 😉
Agreed😀
I wish I'd love my job as much as Owen.
Glad you enjoy watching him do what he loves😀
How long did it take him to get to where he’d sit so quickly to the sit whistle? I’m having a hard time getting mine to turn his ears on and respond to the sit whistle immediately
Simply put i practice the stop/sit whistle whether at home, at the park or out hunting with zero tolerance for movement, i put him back in a sit to exactly where he was when I blew the whistle, a smart sit will always get a verbal or physical reward, persist and you will be rewarded😀
@@SpanielshuntingtrialingNZ do you use a long check cord for the further out sits? My pup will often only do the “remote” sit if he is facing me and can see me… it’s like he has turned his ears off when he is searching
@@samuelhaywood1770 I have tried check cords but any smart dog knows when they have one on and not, short distances to begin with, success breeds success and build up slowly the distance, if your pup doesn't listen, go get him and put him in the sit, he will understand that the fun stops if he doesn't listen.
Bloody good watch!!
Glad you enjoyed😀
Would that small step after the rabbit flushed, would that go against a dog in a comp ?
I think a judge would like the slight hesitation and then the positive flush🙂
@@SpanielshuntingtrialingNZ Good to know that if I ever get another Springer. Thanks :)
Well I for one was impressed. He is getting better all the time.
Well we have two Novice trials Friday/Saturday next week that will be the test😀
@@SpanielshuntingtrialingNZ Please have someone video your run :)
Beautiful country, lovely dog. Good boy, Owen!
It is truely beautiful country, i am privileged to have access to it to train and hunt my Spaniels.
Is he realy planning on taking a rabbit?
Calm….calm…calm….was that for Owen or you 😂 Just as well you hit that one, the little dog worked his socks off !
Now that makes me laugh, yes we both are working on remaining calm, as you know well our Cockers keep us on the edge😆
you have a very well trained dog there.
We are still learning together 😀
Keep up the good work with Owen.
Are they wascally wabbits?
Oh definitely, destructive little critters and nearly as clever as Bugs🤣
Beautiful dogs, they are loving that!
Yes they certainly do😀
Beautiful country.
Yes very lucky to have access to it😀
It's pretty neat where he goes away too far. I prefer to see the dog in all aspects not just a video where he's 'perfect'
The trainer is by no means perfect so Archie and Owen are not either🤣, they wouldn't be true to their breed if the don't get up to mischief from time to time.
Awesome stuff .. nothing better than watching a dog work
Glad you enjoyed watching 😀
They are both showing a lot of improvement. So good to see :)
I am being a lot more deliberate in keeping my and their standards up when hunting. Glad you are seeing the improvement :-)
Im trying to train my jagd terrier to be a versatile hunter. What greaters hunters you have

Thanks, he is improving. Listening and keeping his head in the game more often, maybe when he is 10 he will be halfway trained🤣🤣
