Brian Wattchow
Australia
Приєднався 11 сер 2013
"Get outside," my parents said when I was a kid. So I did - spending the next 60 years walking, climbing, paddling, fishing, riding my bike. G'day, I'm Brian 'Ponch' Wattchow - I've been a teacher, guide, academic, traveller and writer. I'm fascinated by people's search for meaning in the outdoors. I've written books, dozens of articles and been a keynote speaker at conferences around the world. My PhD was on paddlers and rivers. This channel uses storytelling, art, photography and poetry to explore the nature of the outdoor experience - not just what we do and how we do it, but why we do what we do when we get outside.
Swooping Magpies Attack Cyclist
The AUSTRALIAN MAGPIE rules the roads in Spring. But, you gotta go for your daily ride. This film is about surviving the inevitable encounter between Bike Rider and Magpie. Now, I'm a Collingwood (Magpies) supporter in Australian Football League. Would the Magpie swoopers still go me if I cycled past in my magpie colours!!!

Dolphins, seals, albatross, fjords, 300 metre high cliffs. I've been going to sea in a kayak since the early 1980s. That tiny craft has let me explore some amazing coastlines and islands. Most of the footage in this film was shot off the east coast of Tasmania, Australia - a forbidding coastline at the best of times. Some of the footage used here was shot by my paddling partners on these trips ...

600 km of winding, swirling river in the baking heat of summer. For this next leg of my journey down Australia’s 2,500km River Murray I’ve swapped from my old green canoe into my marathon racing K1 (single kayak). I’ve gone from the comfort of the canoe to the hardship of the racing kayak, But, exhaustion and solitude brings unexpected insights and rewards on the hardest paddle I’ve ever done. ...

It's harsh winter conditions when Brian Wattchow explores the estuaries along the south coast of Australia. The days are colder, the nights are longer. These wild landscapes are amongst our most endangered. Climate change and sea level rise are bringing rapid change. Migratory bird numbers are in steep decline. Wind and tide rule here. Traveling by sea kayak and camping along the edges of sand ...

Paddler, author and outdoor guide Brian Wattchow explores the estuaries of Australia's southern coast. These endangered landscapes are crucial habitat for migratory and resident birds, marsupials and marine life. Ruled by wind and tide but threatened by climate change and sea level rise, it has never been more important to tell their story.

I once had one chase me for two blocks. and turned the corner and chased me two more blocks. I swooped by another once. I forgot the next week and road through his area again. He just landed on my shoulder. Then flew away. Nice warning.
great one brian . I love all your vids . more like this would be great too . but when are you going to paddle in some nice weather lol
Calm, windless days to paddle on the south coast ... we live in hope! One day.
Much wisdom ,much story, much reflection , much courage , much inspiration , much learning much awesomeness . Much Thanks
Many journeys with a lot of good folk (including students) packed in there. The sea is always the great teacher.
Thanks ! :)
wow Brian . If my daughters watched this they would go , is that dad but more handsome . I have such a similar relationship with my darlings . I too was an outdoor educator and guide . showed them the how to love and amaze at it all . If our girls ever met they would be best mates in minutes . what a great and personal film Brian ! thanks
I have a resident pair of magpies in my yard, never a problem. About two years ago a few hundred yards from home I saw a magpie hit by a car. As it laid there dying 3 mates were around it obviously distressed. I stopped and removed the just dead bird from the road so its mate would be safe. From then on, every season, they swoop me relentlessly in my yard or whenever I get on the bike. Think they blame me for the death. They are very intelligent birds, so this year I've brough some meal worms and trying to make friends. Not sure its working yet.
At least you did the right thing Terry (even if you are paying the price now). Sounds like you are trying to win over the next generation with bribery!! Good luck - vas you said, very smart birds.
Needed something a Magpie would be scared of... like a Carlton scarf
Your Aussie magpies are lot more aggressive than our British variety, a difference that probably extends to most of the wildlife in the two places. On the footie field here, Newcastle United are nicknamed The Magpies - same B & W striped jersey. Again, I don't think they are as aggressive as Collingwood! Nice idea for a video Brian, hope you enjoyed the ride.
Damn, I never knew these birds can be so vicious. 😅
Nice one Watto.Go Giants 😅
What fantastic coastline you have there, beautiful
Hey Brian, think you'd better make some more videos. I'll have to try and find that bit of coast. I'm heading off next week for another section of the Murray river. Take care
wonderful video! May I ask what camera and sound recording equipment you use for these videos? do you use a tripod or some other device when you film yourself?
Thanks. Here's the basic rundown on my camera/audio set up. - GoPro 10 (with media mod - the condenser mic with wind shield in the mod is very good), the mod comes off for the on water shots and I simply mount the gopro on a float stick and it is either under some elastic shock cord on the deck or into a pocket on my buoyancy vest - so no fancy mounts). - iPhone 14pro for most of the landscape and on land action shots (I attach a Rode Videomic Pro with wind protector to it with a simple dongle and it records great sound in the field). I tried more compact condenser mics but they were nowhere near as good. - I also take a Panasonic Lumix digital camera for wildlife closeups. It has a great zoom. That's the 'gap' with the GoPro and iPhone, they are great for wide angle but useless for zooming. I've been disappointed in this camera (it sucks dust onto the sensor and has poor stabilisation) - I'll probably replace it with a similar level Sony. - Tripods - great topic. I carry three. A tiny GoPro tripod, a Joby GorillaPod 3kg, a 'proper' tripod (cheap, nearly all parts plastic - crucial for landscapes and wildlife shots + I attach a universal style ball head mount on that - this tripod extends out to max of about 1.5m). This tripod set up is really cheap. I leave my expensive tripods at home on these kind of trips. You can imagine the punishment (sand, salt) that gear gets in this environment. All this stuff (bar the larger tripods) fits into an 8 ltr drybag. cheers, hope that helps, bw
@@brianwattchow Thank you so much Brian. These tips are a huge help! Looking forward to see more of your paddling videos. Take care.
A really nice video! Loved how you captured the space and ambiance of solo paddling and camping, well done!
A great promo for older folks staying active in the outdoors and showing that adventure is a state of mind, regardless of age. I guess these trips aren't quite as ambitious as when you were a younger fella but the enjoyment is no doubt still as great. Referring back to a theme in your previous video (The Unasked Question:Why?), I think you answer that here: personal fulfilment, satisfying that need for connection with nature. And to prove to ourselves that we can still do it, right? Appreciate you taking the time to make these videos Brian - enjoyable and thought-provoking.
Cheers David, yep, not all adventures need to be over the horizon. There is plenty to do close to home.

Wow, love this video. Your words are so true about solo trips away. Thank you for another fantastic video and message
Love your work mate. Honoured to be part of your story as someone who’s journeyed with you and still continue to learn from you. Thanks
Thanks Ben, the outdoors continues to be a great teacher.
There must be hundreds, if not thousands of videos just like this...yet your words put this one into a realm of its own!!
Nice work Ponch. Great images matched by thought provoking comments
Wow Watto gone HD.Totally ott but still magic mate😅
😂Hey, us 'creatives' have got standards! Or, maybe we just can't stand all those early stuff ups we made. Onwards ...
Totally agree, i cyclevon my own sat here in Spore now upto 40km as pretty flat here with endomorfins kicking in halfway. Sundays with mates ending up at pub. Makes the workinng week possible😅
Good onya Andrew. Keep pedalling mate.
That's a beautiful canoe. I had the privilege of taking a Seliga canoe for some 2-week trips through the boundary Waters in quetico when I was a teenager. Camp Woody wagon in northern Minnesota has the oldest continuously maintained fleet of boats anywhere in the Western hemisphere; they are art and such a pleasure to paddle. Godspeed good man, keep these traditions alive.
Beautiful comment - many thanks, yes, let's all keep the magic of the traditional canoe alive and well.
Keep your videos up! They are amazing ❤
Thank you so much!!
Sir you are a National Treasure. Your videos should replace the rubbish on Television.
Nice work Ponch. Good to see the K1 is getting used.
The old boat still going around Mike, and pretty happy I didn't fall straight into the drink out at Blue Rock when I took it for a paddle.
A great blend of local history and personal memoire of your trips down the Murray. Einstein famously said, "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving". If he'd been a paddler he might have used the K1 in the analogy - well done on staying upright. River Dreams is an excellent series which deserves a wider audience.
Thanks. Love the Einstein quote - would have put that in the vid!
I recall the trip you took us on down the Murray on 3 or 4 day trip whilst at Bendigo La Trobe in '93 - such great memories! I discovered the love of the journey down the river. Beautiful.
Your best work so far. A fantastic narrative and great film work. This father/daughter bond is very special. Well done Kate for not showing up Ponch's very average paddling style.
... although Kate is always poised to show up the old man's lack of fishing success!!
The wonderful lost art of story telling.beautiful.😊
Cheers Andrew, I really appreciate the comment.
A lovely film Brian, and treasured times sharing the outdoor experience with your daughter. Solo trips are great because solitude sharpens the senses, but having your offspring along brings a different dimension. It's the family trips I have the fondest memories of and I expect you are the same.
My favourite place 💚 Thanks for making such a terrific video Ponch!
Bit of a cold ripper this one but enigmatic as always😊
Cheers Andrew, the estuaries here can be busy (and noisy) places in the warmer months. So winter is a special time to be out camping and witnessing nature going about its business.
Another beautifully photographed & narrated estuary family trip from the interesting Watto.thx for posting mate😊
Great video mate, really enjoyed it.
Sorry about your doggy :( That made me cry :(
Thank you for shedding a tear for Buzz, he was truly a wonderful companion.
A wonderful reflection on multiple levels .... congratulations ....look forward to more ...
A wonderful and inspiring film. Thank you
Beautiful video Brian. I let a great canine mate go this year too. Sorry about Buzz
Thanks Chris, yes it's hard to let our canine mates go, they have given our lives so much in the best possible ways.
A thoughtful and touching exploration of the benefits you've experienced through regular cycling over the last year. It's clear how much you value the rides for physical and mental wellbeing and as the best mode of travel for connecting to the landscape and discovering new sights in familiar places. Cycling must be one of the few physical activities that can be enjoyed throughout most of the seven ages of man (or woman!) and hopefully us 60somethings will get to notch up many more miles in the saddle. Hope you are enjoying the new Kona!
Thanks David - the 'smooth' new Kona is sure helping me get out on a few more rides. As you point out, the bike is such a great way to 'be' in the world and can be enjoyed by all ages. Keep pedalling.
I too had a childhood on the beach in the sun. The Mornington Peninsula in my case. By pure chance, and dumb luck, I had a skin check at work after all the 'outdoor' staff had been done. Just an add on as a favour. Two stage one melanoma found and removed in a blur of doctors visits and operations. I was lucky. Stupidly lucky. Wasn't even really on my radar. Do yourself, and those you love, a solid. Have a skin check.
Great story Richard, and good luck moving forwards. You were in the right place at the right time. Wouldn't it be great if an annual skin check was a workplace entitlement or part of a national screening program like bowel cancer.
Fantastic.
I really enjoyed this so much.
Thanks Jim, glad you enjoyed coming along for the ride.
Glad to see you aren't just a fair-weather cyclist Brian; going out in bad conditions makes us appreciate the sunny days when they come. I'm guessing the eyewear will be the first thing you reach for on future rides. Anyone who's taken insect life into the eye on a ride never leaves home without glasses thereafter and driving rain can be just as bad. Good to see you on the comeback trail in this series.
62 year old and I'm still learning David! Your comment about the insect is/was very prescient - got a European wasp under the helmet, stung on the forehead, the other day - ouch.
Superb reflections. I'm going to make my appointment today.
Good fella.
Yeah, I'm sure we've spent too much time bare-skinned under the sun. But it was all worth the memories. Lovely reflection, and thanks for bringing us this video, Brian.
Agreed Tony.
Oh my gosh, I need to explore Australia!
We'll look forward to seeing you in Oz Al! Check out my Mawson Trail films if you liked The Weary Road - its a wonderful bike terail.
Doing wonders for mens mental health. Outdoors, and a check in with respected peers
Elegy?
Quite right Edgar - nice pick up.
On second watching this your most elequent Ponch. This Series shoukd be compulsory in Nsw/Queensland schools. Believe the current state of the Murray river is a symbol of mankind - gurgling, rampant at times but resilient 😅
Cheers Andrew - the series will continue in the second half of the year. I just need to get back up to the river to do some more filming. The further one travels down the river the greater and more obvious the human impacts become. But there are also some very hopeful developments - good stories to tell as well.
There is no sea level rise.
