AARSHIN KARANDE, senior disciple of Mewati Gharana luminary SANDEEP RANADE "NAADRANG," offers a rendition of Raga Hansadhwani on the occasion of Guru Purnima 2024 (July 21st).
This bandish was composed by Pandit Motiram, an exponent of the Mewati Gharana and Pandit Jasraj-ji's father and guru.
Raga Hansadhwani is a pentatonic mode adapted from the Carnatic Classical Music Tradition. First introduced into the Hindustani Classical tradition by Ustad Aman Ali Khan "Amar" of the Muradabad (Bhendi Bazaar) Gharana, Raga Hansadhwani quickly became a favorite among many maestros in the early quarter of the 20th Century. This raga takes after both Bilawal- and Kalyan-angs, depending on the interpretation of the performing artist. Hansadhwani has traditionally been set to devotionally-themed texts but can be lent to many moods. This bandish by Pandit Motiram-ji is set to a romantic mood, which is rather unusual for this raga. But, Raga Hansadhwani's happy-go-lucky, light-hearted, and bright persona lends a unique soundscape for romantic themes.
Aarshin has been an admirer of Pandit Motiram-ji's music since learning Mewati gayaki in his childhood. This raga and bandish are presented humbly as an offering to the genius that is Sangeet Ratna Pandit Motiram-ji.

लई जा रे बदरा संदेसवा ।
पिया मोरा बसत बिदेसवा ।१।
उन बिन मोहे कल ना परत है ।
कब सुध लई है मीत पिहरवा ॥२॥
TRANSLATION:
The speaker says, "Cloud, take me with you to where my beloved resides abroad. There is no tomorrow without my beloved. When will my beloved come to their senses and return?"
