Magic Sam Part II: Look Whatcha Done
Hope you guys and gals dig this companion lesson to my "All Your Love Magic Sam Part I lesson" from back in January. This time we're looking at two uptempo classics on Cobra Records, Look Whatcha Done and All My Whole Life. They both have smokin' lead, and cliffhanger intros; as usual, it's all excitement, all the time with Magic Sam. I'll cover slowing it down and practicing with a looper, playing with your fingers, and stringing together phrases to make an exciting solo. On this lesson I've slowed down a bit and tried to help out more beginner/intemediate players. Have fun!

Memphis to Chicago: Jr Parker's Sun Sides
Переглядів 8463 роки тому
This lesson looks at the hugely influential Sun recordings by Little Junior's Blue Flames (Junior Parker) with Pat Hare or Floyd Murphy on guitar on guitar. This stuff is like a bolt of lightning sparking off rock and roll, rockabilly and a new kind of electric blues. There are two songs in E: Love My Baby and Mystery Train, and then two boogies in A, Feel so Good and Feel so Bad. Pat Hare is a...
Johnny Littlejohn Chicago Slide Guitar Lesson
Переглядів 5943 роки тому
Johnny Littlejohn's 1969 Arhoolie release "Chicago Blues All-Stars" is a holy grail Chicago blues record vocals, guitar tone, the slide, stinging single notes, atmosphere and groove. It's a bar that hasn't been met since. His subsequent records are great as well, especially "Funky from Chicago" (featuring Eddie Taylor) and "So-Called Friends". Here's a look at his slide playing in open D and hi...
Chicago Blues Lesson: Brewer Phillips-- Who Needs a Bass?
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 роки тому
Brewer Phillips was an irreplaceable part of Hound Dog Taylor's sound, which was so old it was new. The stripped down two guitar attack was raw, loud and straight from Mississippi to the South Side Chicago taverns. Playing the bass role in a two guitar-drums band requires a consistently driving guitarist who has mastered the bass strings, and Brewer was that first and foremost. His sound is an ...

Luther Snake Boy Johnson Lesson
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
This week's topic is the mysterious and gone-too-soon Luther "Georgia Boy" Johnson, also known as Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson: real name Lucious Brinson. His two years with Muddy Waters put him on the map and he recorded several fine records with "The Bluesmen of the Muddy Waters Band" for Spivey, as well as "Chicken Shack" and "Mud in Your Ear" with some truly incendiary guitar and gripping voc...
The Myers Bros w Little Walter Lesson
Переглядів 3,1 тис.3 роки тому
My last lesson described how exciting it was when Eddie C Campbell came back to Chicago and started to play gigs. The other big 'comeback' in Chicago during that time was when Dave Myers, of the Aces, who'd backed Junior Wells and Little Walter on some of their greatest recordings and then became of Chicago's first electric bass players, decided to play guitar publicly again. He played an after...
Chicago West Side Blues Master Eddie C Campbell Guitar Lesson
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
Back in 1994, everyone I knew was abuzz with excitement when the word got out that Eddie C was coming back to Chicago after living in Europe for ten years. The first few notes I heard Eddie play explained why his clean, reverb-soaked sound crackled with energy and was unlike anything I'd ever heard before. I went to hear him at every opportunity we gradually became friends, shared the stage occ...

A Chat about Howlin' Wolf's Guitar Genius Willie Johnson
Переглядів 3,5 тис.3 роки тому
Howlin Wolf's Sun recordings feature guitarist Willie Johnson playing jazzy chords and jabbing leads with a distorted, roaring tone and nearly frantic aggression, matching the Wolf's raw voice and huge presence. Willie Johnson's style may have began in the Delta but it aspired towards the more urbane guitar stylings of Johnny Moore, T Bone Walker and Pee Wee Crayton, with unique and unforgettab...

The one thing the next gen of Blues players can't replicate... Regardless of race... is the voices. Even younger black folks from the same regions haven't got that same pronunciation and delivery. There's something about Muddy's voice. Howlin Wolf's voice. They're so unique. Dudes guitar sound is great. Very classic. A real 50s 60s purist. Very nice job playing. Singing will always be each man giving his own take on the blues. Nobody can sing like BB, Muddy, or Wolf.

This dude got some BB licks down. There were a few moments here that were bang on BB King stuff. The phrasing and sound are exact in some spots. Nice playing!

Why do guitarists call the frets and not the notes? Do they not know the notes or do they think their audience isnt smart enough to know notes?
