2019 Subaru WRX iDoing Head Unit Install Lessons Learned
Just a few things I learned while installing the iDoing head unit that I wanted to share. Hopefully this helps someone out.

I would like to add it's also okay to drop the bolts behind the dash. I dropped both (and a socket extension)on the left and right. The right was just sitting at the bottom, and the left fell out hitting the bottom panel. You can unscrew another bolt on the driver's side right under the panels in between and pull it apart to get it out. Either way a magnetic tool is a good investment.
Installed mine and it blew my illumination fuse (#16) not sure why, but it keeps happening:(

That’s how it came out of the box.
What kind of speaker system did it run with ? Base/Premium or Harman Kardon?
It’s a Premium so that’s my guess. Definitely not harmon kardon.
If you’re having issues with the left bolt to remove the stock head unit, take off the bottom air bag. It’s only two bolts. I spent an hour and a half trying to get that bolt off. Taking that air bag off made life super easy.
I recently bought a 2021 STI and the previous owner has this exact setup. I’m seeing a pretty large gap at the top as you stated in your video. How do I remove this unit so I can reinstall per your instructions? Are there bolts behind the dash?
You’ll have to slowly and gently pry it out to loosen the clips holding it that I described. Slow and steady wins the race. Then just reinstall how I explained in the video. Good luck.
What plug you need to plug in for the driving wheel buttons function
There was a sheet that came with the unit which identifies each of the different harnesses. While the head unit is disassembled from the car, trace the wiring to see which one would make more sense. Also look at pin quantity, how many functions does your steering wheel have-that harness should have a similar number of conncetions
TBH I just paid an installer to do this for me. With my luck, the stereo would catch fire after I installed it.

Radio has been working fine. Just make sure everything is wired up correctly.
Can you tell us what vape that is? I've heard it's a necessary accessory for owning a subaru.
That’s what they say lol. It’s just a random vape pen that my friend gave me. Don’t really know much about them but anything should work. Adds 50hp too.
what voltage does the headunit put out? consensus that android headunits are garbage for sound quality... anybody that upgrades the stock headunit is going to "sound better" because it sends more voltage to the speakers. but how much? trying to compare to the well known headunit manufactures in sound.
The AC voltage that the head unit puts out will vary depending on how loud you turn it up. Bottom line is the integrated amp in that unit is not meant to power speakers to reference levels. If you want something that will sound impressive you need designated amps with plenty of overhead power, and full speaker swap from a reputable company. Then down the line you could get a sub to fill in the low end 60-100 hz depending on gear. I will say after the rear speaker, tweeter upgrades, and a little finesse with the EQ, the system is noticeable improved…but still nothing to write home about unfortunately unless you do a proper upgrade.
I can’t get this unit to fully sit, top latches not being able to be pushed in any help?
Only the advice I said in the video. Start from the bottom and really make sure that it’s seated properly. You have to line the middle clips up to be able to pop them in fully.
Yea I’m having the same problem! I get the bottom in then the top comes out. Same if I do the top first. I can’t get them to click at all. Feels like the whole unit is wrong?
@@jetman7711 Use a little bit of muscle. I was having fitment issues as well. I muscled it a little bit and it clicked right in. As previously mentioned , start from the bottom then work your way to the top clips.

@@jetman7711 make sure no wires are in the way as well. Sometimes it ends up that way.
Is the mic install required? and what about the GPS antenna?
Only if you use the Sim Card
what radio do you recommend for u subaru wrx 2020?
Installed this radio on my 2018 wrx... it's great, but about six months down the line, the radio doesn't work. Been fiddling with it. Only works now and then when I reset it... it's really annoying

Yes. It has both wired and wireless car play.

Do you know if this unit fits a 2019 sti with the Harmon Kardon system?
It does but I think you have to specify that when you order it. There's an extra harness they send along with the unit.

I just installed mine a couple weeks ago. The reason the usb in armrest no longer works is u unplug the connection to it when u removed stock radio. U can make that connection to armrest usb just by purchasing cheap adapter that connects idoing usb to the armrest usb without pulling up ur armrest. I used this adapter for 2016 wrx (scosche SUUSB01B) Look up a tutorial to adjust your dsp settings for sound. It’s nite and day difference... not same as spending 1k on sound, but it’s night and day difference. I’d recommend running aux rca extension wires to ur glove box too if head unit is out again, so u can set up games, dvd, even mirror screen to phone for streaming Netflix/etc through glove box.
i had this same unit installed by a place and i’m bummed that the usb ports don’t work. If i buy that adapter, is it pretty plug and play? i would just have to remove the unit, find the cable and plug it in?
Yea it’s plug and play. But I know the adapters vary a little from year to year for some reason. Mine fit clean. Just read reviews on Amazon if it’s a different year. All the adapters I looked at had wrx/sti comments about which year and model they successfully got it to work for. Mine is 2016 wrx. If I remember right you’ll plug one end into one of the standard usb (non CarPlay) wires from head unit and one end into plug that sits near bottom by your shift console cubby compartment. It’s pretty obvious that it’s routed to your armrest. Good luck.
