How to fix a faulty tilt & trim switch on a Yamaha 703 remote control (for outboard motors).
Zoveel gesloopt in dordrecht. Gelukkig is het nu anders de binnenstad is prachtig gerestaureerd
Ik kan me de man en zijn kenmerkende geluid zeer goed herinneren. Wat een ontzettend leuke docu over deze bijzondere man.
U heeft hem gekend?
Schitterende docu.
Nice job, diggin the music too
More Bent. Just a little.
Awesome video mate. Cheers.
Fixed mine right up. I Liked and Subscribed.. Thanks Much
i adjusted the clutch with zip ties. didnt help. airco gets cold though.
thanks so much! my up button only worked sometimes, but now it works perfectly. thanks again!
I have been fixing these switches in my shop sense the mid 1980's a lot of other manufactures pot their switches to waterproof them and are not repairable, but Yamaha does it better. As long as the rubber boot is not torn and no corrosion in the switch this can be done. On switches with a lot of use the contact surface will be pitted take a little piece of 400 grit or finer sandpaper and glue it to the flat surface of a pencil eraser and lightly sand the contact in the switch and the contact on the rocker and clean with alcohol then reassemble make sure the spring pin is free and lubricated. The contacts are silver plated so be gentle with them the plating is fairly thick. Some of the newer Mercury controls are the same as the Yamaha. The trim switch on the larger outboards can be repaired in the same way. I hope this helps someone.
exelente, no sabia por donde desarmar para la tecla, me desasno, gracias
The metal contact strip can be slightly bent by just using your fingers. If you bent it just a tiny bit you will notice a much better tactile response when using the up and down... almost like a click. I was needing to take this assembly apart every month and it would only work temporarily. But after I slightly bent that metal contact piece, it works every time. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks for the tip, do you mean bend the contract strip so it is flatter, or it is more bent?
Thank you soooo much for your video! You got me out of a serious jam. Myself and I'm sure countless others appreciate you taking the time to make this video
Thanks for the great video. Big help.
Good video impaired by unnecessary background music.
Just took my 704 switch out of the controls and couldn't tell that the switch DOES come apart. I thought it was fully potted. This will save me $80! Thanks
The music is amazing. I like this video
Thanks mate you can’t please all the morons🤪 it helps me and I am great full.
You video sucks because of the music
Had the same issue, intermittent ability to raise the '02 HPDI 200 from the helm. Disassembled the control & switch, cleaned the contacts with alcohol and fixed the issue. Thank you Sir S.
Thanks for the video. Just saved me a bunch of money. The dealer told me it was a sealed switch. It was a five minute fix, I didn’t have to take apart as much to get to the switch. Thanks again great help.
I've been looking for something like this for a while now. Good job, Kind Sir.
Big Thanks Sir S!! I just used your video to fix the switch on my '99 Grady with a 704 Remote control. Took 15 minutes and saved me $75 for a new switch. FWIW, I used Deoxit D5 to clean the contacts. Same problem as others,, intermittent operation of the Up switch, but there were carbon deposits on all the contacts.
You're welcome! Glad to know we saved another switch from the trash bin.
this is very helpful. how do you tell if it’s the relay that’s bad? i get nothing up or down so i’m not sure what to do
If the switch, the wiring and the power are good, then I guess it's a relay problem. I'm not sure how to check the relay in another way. I also had a problem with the wiring inside the Yamaha 703 control handle, one of the cables broke so had to fix that too. So please check the wiring too when in doubt.
, Tried this, It turned out to be the trim relay but glad I looked at the switch. The contacts needed cleaning badly. Could have given me trouble in the future.
Thank you. Almost applies to the new Mercury switch, except there's not quite enough wire play to get the black plastic off of the aluminum handle frame.
Your video footage is crap..
I think this is my issue. My motor randomly trimmed itself up and wouldn’t go back down unless my throttle was jiggled. Hope this works.
Thank you so much. I ordered a new switch but this easy-to-follow repair will get me through until the new one arrives.
Did u ever get youres replaced. Trying to replace mine myself. Having a hard time any knowledge would help. Ty
Hi, not sure if you want to replace the whole unit or the magnetic clutch, but there's a topic about adjusting the magnetic clutch on a Dutch forum: (use google translate): www.volvo850forum.nl/index.php?topic=50469.0 And a topic about replacing the whole unit: www.volvo850forum.nl/index.php?topic=14442.0 I didn't replace mine, but adjusted the magnetic clutch and that solved half of the problem.
@@m4sc0tt I have this problem. Can you share with us how you adjusted the magnetic clutch? I tried to insert zip ties but had no luck in stringing them thru. My Volvo V70XC 2002
@@michelleocampo7414 Hi, please check this howto (and use Google translate, assuming that you're from the Netherlands): volvo850forum.nl/index.php/topic,50469.0.html
Please let me know if you do live in the Netherlands, then I know just the guy for this problem.
@@m4sc0tt yes and yes. Could you forward the name to me?
Great easy to follow pulled mine apart cleaned it up bit of grease like new thanks.
Thanks!
Any advice on why the alarm sound is coming from the remote? Thanks for this, we're able to replace our trim and tilt. Now the alarm is left to fix so we really appreciate if you could advise.
Hi Violet Fernando, as far as I know (not totally sure) the alarm only beeps when the engine overheats, or if the oil tank for the autolube system is empty. In both cases the engine should be switched off and checked for problems.
If it beeps in neutral sometimes that's from water in the fuel also fyi.
Check your impeller, mine kept sounding, looked at impeller it was worn out( 30 years old), replaced it took half an hour, no problems keeping the engine cool now.
Excellent video. I wish I had this like 8 hours ago. Well done!
It was a cinch after watching your video to pull my control unit apart to access the switch and clean the carbon build-up on the contacts. I was having intermittent operation of the the "up" direction of the motor. Certainly beats paying 80 dollars for a replacement from the dealer!
disliked cause the fricken camera guy moving all over getting mor dizzer than i am , lokks like the same control for my merc force 40ho ??
My camera crew and stunt men went to the beach, so my 10yo daugther and I had to do all the work ourselves ;D
Sir S. I’d say it was some fine camera work🤙🏽
THANK YOU! I just fixed the UP position on my newest acquisition for FREE!
Thanks! That was really helpful.
