"Keep the Home-Fires Burning," World War I Armistice Day Veterans Day Remembrance Day Ivor Novello
"Keep the Home-Fires Burning ('Till The Boys Come Home)" is a World War I favorite in honor of Veterans Day, Armistice Day, and Remembrance Day (all observed on November 11, the date that hostilities ended in WWI).

"Keep the Home-Fires Burning (Till the Boys Come Home)" was composed in 1914 by Welsh composer/dramatist/actor/singer Ivor Novello. The lyric is by Lena Guilbert Ford, an American who had relocated to England and become a fried of Novello. The song encourages the people of England to be brave for the sake of the young men who have gone to war and to do what they can on the home front to support them. It also reminded them that their international allies were their friends whom they had pledged to defend. Lyricist Lena Ford herself lived this in her own life; she opened her home to soldiers, and she was killed during an air raid in 1918.
The call to do what one can to support one's friends (locally and internationally) and serve one's community, country, and world still resonates today, especially as we live in an even more interconnected world (even on this UA-cam channel, there are viewers from many different countries!); so please thank a veteran, be kind to the people around you, give to a charity near you, or do whatever you can to bring good into the world today (November 11) or any other day you may read this!

My own great-grandfather served in the U.S. Army in the 1st World War, but the war ended before his unit reached the front lines, so he never saw any action. My grandfather recalls that he and his siblings would ask their father about the War, and they were quite disappointed that he had no tales of heroism! Still, if he had, I might not be here today, so I'm grateful he was spared. "Keep The Home-Fires Burning" enjoyed several recordings during World War I, including recordings by James F. Harrison, Stanley Kirby, and popular tenor John McCormack (who also recorded "It's A Long Way To Tipperary"). The song came to be associated with World War I, and it has been featured in media associated with World War I, including Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars, the British TV drama Upstairs, Downstairs, and the films Chariots of Fire and Atonement. The song is also featured in the movie Gosford Park, where Ivor Novello (played by Jeremy Northam) is himself a character, playing and singing his own compositions for his aristocratic friends.
Lyric:
They were summoned from the hillside
They were called in from the glen
And the country found them ready
At the stirring call for men.
Let no tears add to their hardships
As the soldiers pass along,
And although your heart is breaking
Make it sing this cheery song
Keep the Home Fires Burning,
While your hearts are yearning,
Though your lads are far away
They dream of home.
There's a silver lining
Through the dark clouds shining,
Turn the dark cloud inside out
'Til the boys come home.
Overseas there came a pleading,
"Help a nation in distress."
And we gave our glorious laddies
Honour bade us do no less,
For no gallant son of freedom
To a tyrant's yoke should bend,
And a noble heart must answer
To the sacred call of "Friend."
Keep the Home Fires Burning,
While your hearts are yearning,
Though your lads are far away
They dream of home.
There's a silver lining
Through the dark clouds shining,
Turn the dark cloud inside out
'Til the boys come home.

"If You Knew Susie (Like I Know Susie)," 1925 Tin Pan Alley hit for Eddie Cantor, Roaring 20s
Переглядів 20428 днів тому
Roaring 20's crazy hit! "If You Knew Susie (Like I Knew Susie)," is most closely associated with Eddie Cantor, one of the biggest Vaudeville, Broadway, and film stars of the era. Cantor was a slightly built, nervous type of singer/comedian known for his wide-eyed expressions ("banjo eyes"). He also derived a lot of comedy from his Jewish heritage. PBS, looking retrospectively, called his person...

Classic love song from Show Boat, the phenomenal 1927 Broadway musical. Show Boat is such an American classic that it has enjoyed a number of performances of near-operatic caliber. Vocally, I am much closer to the original Magnolia, Norma Terris (a 1920s musical comedy star), than to some of the operatic Magnolias that followed. In this performance, we're playing up the musical theatre qualitie...
"You Tell Me Your Dream (I'll Tell You Mine)," 1899 American nostalgic waltz, piano/vocal

Nostalgic American waltz of the late 1890s! "You Tell Me Your Dream" is a bittersweet love song, with music by Charles N. Daniels and lyric by Seymour Rice and Albert H. Brown. Popular love songs of the late 1800s were typically waltzes, and the verses tell a story, while the chorus is the same each time with a lyric of broad appeal (so audiences would remember the chorus!). Alcohol production and sales were prohibited in the U.S with the passage of the 18th amendment in 1919, which was in effect from 1920-1930, but hidden stills, alcohol caches, and speakeasys were not uncommon especially judging from the number of popular songs and musicals that touched upon them! Thank you ❤it’s amazing :) what do you think of Novello? :)
You are welcome! I am not very familiar with Novello (a real gap for me), but I enjoyed this! I tried to think of how he would have played and sung it himself at the piano.
✨
You’re a treasure for our nation ❤
Thank you, John! What a great compliment; it's an honor!
Yes, this opera-feeling again. Beautiful song and your excellent voice, thanks for this.😊
Thank you, Jari! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Yes, i can almost imagine all those people dancing in the Charleston style! All i have to do, is turn the volume louder, and enjoy this performance.😊
Thank you, Jari! I am glad I could bring part of the Roaring 20's back to life!
Jari Sundström from Finland wants more this kind of a music. (why don`t we have artists like you in my country?) On the other hand, your performances are so unique. But, thanks for this.
Thank you, Jari! I think I got your name wrong in some of my comments, so I will go back and update them if I can. I am so glad you are enjoying my channel! Music really brings joy to human existence.

Thank you! It's great to hear that, especially from an Italian (the home of opera)!
Great vocal delivery! Challenging melodies and pauses in there too. Wow!
Thank you! It was really fun but a little challenging as well; I am glad you liked it!
Love your vocal interpretation as you add interest and sparkle plus energy to the song. As a drummer and musician I really love your performance. Bravo Bella Donna. Hahaha.
Thank you, Arnold! What a great compliment; I am so glad you enjoyed it!
Superb as always. Fantastic to have the lyrics to follow, and sing along.
Thank you! This is one where I always want to sing along too!
Your music is really an exciting. And this performance, yes!
Thank you; I am glad you enjoyed it!
Less sustain pedal on the piano will improve the quality and sound of the playing.
Thanks for the tip!
I think the forearm needs to rotate more (like when turning a metal key🗝️) for changes of note in the same hand. Good singing, by the way!
Thank you; I'll try to remember that!
Am i sitting at the opera? This is so good!
Thank you! I am so glad you enjoyed it!
What a beautiful version of this song. Love how you did this, nice to see a young person who appreciates the oldies (although in comparison to these songs, I'm a youngster too, haha).
Thank you! Yes, it's strange to think that nearly all of us who are listening today are younger than the songs themselves! It shows how timeless good music is.
Grande talento
Thank you! It's neat to have an Italian listener!
Bravissima. Complimenti. Grande voce. Viva la musica

Another lovely rendition of a classic -- thanks! Perhaps because this song is short, other versions I've heard of it are complete. -- Steve
Thanks, Steve! The arrangement I have (which in in Gershwin songbook and has copyright date of 1924) has just a single verse and chorus. I think that's all that was published, but I could be wrong. I could have repeated the chorus, but I decided it was nice as it was.
Gotta luv the Gershins. You always give superb renditions of these great songs from our past. Thank you for your dedication 😊
