Excellent recording. Love this overture.
Excellent recording.
One of my all favourite band works.
The song is Danny Boy
The song Danny Boy was written in 1910 using the melody of the Irish Tune from County Derry.
Leonard B. Smith is probably the last of the great American March composer. I love my Gems of the Concert Band recordings. Just keep those posts coming.
👏
Beautiful. A rare talent.
This band does an outstanding job with one of my favorite Sousa marches.
It's one of my favorites too. Love the woodwinds at the bridge.
Excellent band. Keep up your important work.
Brilliant!!!!
Great channel Jeff. Keep those gems of the concert band coming.
Lots more coming. Thanks so much for listening. By the way, the Virginia Grand Military Band holds only two 2-hour rehearsals prior to each concert. The musicians do not see the music before the first rehearsal. We're fortunate to have so many current and retired US military band musicians here in the Washington, DC area that avail their talents the VGMB.
Great stuff. A true “Gem of the Concert Band”
One of the most sacred pieces of music in the English speaking world. Any patriot would struggle to meet the emotion of the words in the forst stanza: I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test That lays upon the altar, the dearest and the best The love that never falters, the love that pays the price The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
This has become one of the United Kingdoms favourite patriotic pieces. Played at the funerals of Winston Churchill and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth .
Very good.Thanks-you. 🙂👍
You will find in the collections of thde Music Division at the Library of Congress in the ML96 class a piano piece by another former Chief, Oliver Strunk, probably composed when he was a student in Berlin, where he briefly studied with Hans Pfitzner. Perhaps an enterprising piabist will give it a try. Engel recommended Strunk as his successor. Unfortunately, Strunk displeased Mrs. Coolidge, who had him fired. Strunk eventually ended up as a professor at Princeton, where he became a mentor of Jon Newsom, who, after joining the Music Division staff in 1966, eventually became Music Devision Chif. He retired in 2008. Among his composiyions is a march commissioned by a Delaware artist. Entitled "Thde Day the Earth Stood Still Quickstep, the work remains in a computer generated recording, the medium for whnich it was intended.
This is an excellent march, and Allen Crowell is an outstanding conductor. This deserves programming more.
