This sounds like a demo or even a rehearsal and not the actually recording without reverb. Besides that, fuck Phil Spector! He's a murderer psycho and ruined the Let it Be album, too.

I always thought this song had lots of potential, but the bass is too boring to be that loud. It would sound better without that bass at all. George Martin really could have done something with this song.

There is no such thing as a "non-Specror" version of "Instant Karma." Phil Spector produced the record, which means he recorded every take. Whoever mixed this forgot to change the drum sound. They sound exactly like a Phil Spector production.

Spector's version is fantastic. This rough, pre-production version makes me realize that John's voice was giving out during this recording. Lennon probably switched to talking over the chorus at the end because his voice was becoming unreliable. Spector did a great job masking John's vocal troubles by adding echo and a chorus.

The Beatles double track Johńs voice because his voice was too raw and strong. I can see it now. very “in your face” like. I hated all of Spector´s treatment of Johńs sound, but this mix needs to not to put his voice so upfront of the instruments.

I’m sure John would have had great musicians at hand when he recorded this. It’s an awesome song and lyrics. I usually love Johns voice, chord choices, guitar playing, and song writing. That said (I’m sure I will be hated for this) but this is why i find this bare bones production grating, and annoying and unlistenable. John’s voice is recorded to make it sound it’s coming out of cheap AM radio and far too upfront. His voice is too up front to every instrument like he’s in another room or building n. There is no reason for this. What is he screaming over? His voice hurts my ears to give the song any kind of volume. That is probably a very talented drummer and he may be playing the way John wanted but the fills sound amateurish. It sounds like my friend’s teenage son’s garage band on their first days. The piano has no depth and sounds like it’s in an empty freshly painted room. There are no dynamics, everything is full balls on without a hint of finesse. I’d include John’s screeching. Who was he pissed off at? Phil did the best he could. He changed the song into something I can listen to without flinching in pain. That said. It’s a cool song but deserved much better.

Like so many others, I prefer the version that I am familiar with. One of John's greatest songs. It is incredibly political yet spiritual at the same time. We all shine on.

Instant Karma has a lot of delay effect but it does not have the wall of sound technique. The wall of Sound was produced by adding a bunch of instrument on top of each other. Here there is only piano drums and bass and a delay effect that Lennon used to love.

He’s very flat in sections of this. Can see why fx were applied to mask this.
