The Germans DIDN'T pick the 100th Bomb Group out for such vicious attacks over other bomber groups simply at random! They had a VERY good reason! Early in the 100th's career, one of their B 17's was damaged during a raid, and fell out of formation and found itself alone. suddenly it was under attack by two Me 109's. Already damaged, The bomber lowered its landing gear, indicating its desire to surrender. The German fighters broke off the attack and assumed an escort formation and signaled the B 17 to follow them to their airbase. The B 17 pilots waved in reply, and all of a sudden, the bomber's guns opened up on the German fighters shooting both of them down! The B 17 then raise its landing gear and flew back to its base in England! BUT, the Me 109 pilots had radioed back to their base the bomber''s markings including what unit the B 17 belonged to. So, when the fighters reported back to base that they were being fired on by a plane AFTER it had surrendered......... THAT is why the Germans went after the 100th Bomb Group the way they did!

I just finished reading Masters of The Air and it was great, had a hard time putting it down. While we didn't have any family members in the Air Corp in WWII we did have one in the Navy & one in the Marines. I consider myself truly fortunate to have heard their stories first hand. We also had family members serve in WWI, Korea, Vietnam, & the Cold War. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!

My Dad was a waist gunner in the 100th BG , 351st on the Piccadilly Lily . He flew the majority of his missions in JUN-Oct '43. He flew on the Regensburg/ Swienfurt mission of AUG17, '43. His diary entries from that battle are a sobering read . He details the number of enemy fighters they encountered, how many they shot down ( he shot down 2) and seeing another plane take hits and explode . His after battle diary entry while in N. Africa discusses the 'buddies' whose cots were empty when they got to that temporary base . He names off the guys who didn't make it back from his unit. Heart wrenching to read.

An incredible learning experience for me to learn about the 100th Bomber Group was to read Donald L. Miller’s book “Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany”. I read and listened to the audio book several times and still go back to it. As described in the book, my father was one of those who as “a result of a youthful romance with flying. Growing up in the Golden Age of Aviation, they had whittled balsa wood into airplane models…”. He was not a Bomber Boy but a pilot in a F6F Hellcat at 19 years old starting on the Enterprise CV-6 in August 1944 and finishing on the Lexington CV-16 January 1945 with VF-20 "Joker coming through". We used to laugh together what a shock it was for him to go from the models to combat.

As we approach yet another 'Veteran's Day' tomorrow, I think of those B-17 Bomb Group members, who contributed so greatly to the freedom's we enjoy today. These are also the same individuals who created the post war US economic superpower, that continues to enrich our lives today. I had the privilege of sharing a B-17 flight deck with 'Lucky' at the 100th BG Reunion at Savannah in 2013. When I relinquished the controls to him, you could tell the airplane was in the hands of a 'Master Of The Air'. It was a great and unforgettable honor to fly with this man. May God bless them all.

Lucky, it was an honor to have you on the flight deck with me in the 17 that day at Savannah in 2013. You are one of my hero’s and a truly great American. I recall the night before that flight at the reunion how you kept mentioning to me that you wanted to fly it once more. There’s not too many of us present day B-17 pilots who can claim ‘Lucky’ Luckadoo was once my copilot! And, you were able to fly the other 100th BG veterans who were aboard. A special moment for us all. By the way, Mike Faley has the footage!

Can I just say how humbling the realisation of the sacrifice made by these brave men is to me,it saddens me greatly to see these men climb into their aircraft and subject themselves in a lot of cases to the ultimate sacrifice...their lives, the sheer bravery of each and every one of you is beyond my ability to quantify....yet you did it for Democracy and Freedom, I am an enlightened person now that i have seen your magnificent example, the Freedom that you fought for i once took for granted, i dont now, i look up at the sky and thank God for the men of the 100th bomb Group...you are Heroes Eternal, and my Friends Forever....Thank you all so so much...Bless You
