Largest Fruit Fly Brain Map: Tiny Brain, Big Impact with AI & Citizen Science - Sebastian Seung
It’s often said that Eskimos have 100 words for snow, and neuroscientists, have hundreds of terms for neurons - unsurprising given the human brain contains roughly 86 billion neurons connected by trillions of synapses. This immense complexity is why, despite astonishing technological progress in other fields, humanity has yet to unravel the mysteries of the brain.
That’s what makes the first complete brain mapping of a fruit fly, a human-AI collabaration, such a groundbreaking achievement - and even SNL couldn’t resist celebrating it a few weeks ago!
With Tomasz Kula, I sat down with Sebastian Seung, the Co-Leader of the FlyWire project, to discuss what kind of new insights this reveals about the brain, how AI enabled the project, and also how ordinary citizens got involved to make the connectome vision a reality!
Sebastian Seung: Evnin Professor in Neuroscience, Professor of Computer Science and Neuroscience at Princeton University, Author of Connectome and Co-Leader of EyeWire and FlyWire projects
Tomasz Kula: Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows and post-doc at Beth Stevens and Bernardo Sabatini Lab. Tomasz focuses on applying high-throughput genetic tools to the brain.

Time Stamps:
00:00 - 03:22 Intro (Who is Sebasitan Seung and co-interviewer Tomasz Kula)
03:22 - 03:57 What has Sebastian been working on since the TED Connectome talk and EyeWire (a citizen science game to map the 3D structure of neurons, focusing on the retina)?
04:24 - 05:35 Sebastian’s vision of Connectome 14 years ago becoming a reality
05:37 - 08:03 Why fruitfully to study the brain despite being much smaller than a human brain?
08:04 - 09:13 Why is the brain still such a hard nut to crack when humanity is doing so much with technology?
09:14 - 10:04 Mapping is key in understanding complex biological systems
10:05 - 12:49 Is the fruitfully brain mapping analogous to the human genome mapping 15 years ago?
12:50 - 15:00 How did AI contribute to the fruit fly mapping?
15:00 - 15:54 Is AI enabling the mapping to happen faster with more accuracy?
15:55 - 19:47 What are the applications Sebastian is the most excited about enabling? How much can a static image tell you about a living brain?
19:48 - 21:58 What kind of information do you layer on top of static image to expand investigations further
21:59 - 23:26 What’s next for Connectome and what are the current technical constraints?
23:28 - 26:15 Make a big tent to maximize the scientific effect and outcome with AI, citizen science, team science and open science
26:16 - 27:25 Doing science a bit like startup - get users first and fundraise
27:26 - 29:55 How can non-scientists join the FlyWire project? How AI is making proofreading harder
29:56 - 32:42 Is Sebastian still dancing and how does Sebastian keep so young? Is being a scientist part of it? Hint: Heartbeat test
32:43 - 34:56 Are you scared about the future our children will live in and how do we prepare?
34:57 - 35:22 You Need to Calm Down Ending (Feat. Taylor Swift)

I would like to thank rhie for giving us the opportunity to hear from the famous professor Seung It's very interesting subject but difficult to understand. I would like to cheer her up for the effort to easily get the idea of the brain and its activities. Thanks.
Very interesting
Thank you for sharing this. Very informative!
Good one🎉
For me, it looks a great conversation that can widen my understanding of cutting-edge science and engineering.
Very much informative 👍
Brilliant and thought provoking! Can't wait for the next video!
Great interview and great insights!
I sincerely hope everything goes well for you.
Very interesting, Alex - I find that a lot of what you say - about drug development timelines, hurdles, enormous waste in big pharma (and non-big pharma/biotech) over the years - resonates with me. Also, I agree with staying focused and persisting on a given therapeutic area (as long as the science is solid and improving) in order to achieve success.
everything people find inexplicable, disgusting, or hateful about pharma is the markup on medications.
Brilliant interview! Thank you to Professor Aulet, Rhie and the team at Kendall for putting this together! 🤩
응원합니다 ❤❤❤❤❤
기대됩니다❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
