The best strategy is to memorize the boss' attack patterns, instead of trying to wing it. With practice, you get used to this fight.

You are not losing much. It is less than 'meh'. The best melee weapon in the game is the Jelly Whip (which you can't miss). This one weapon makes a huge impact on the game, both in the standard campaign and even more so in the "Full Metal Mode".
