How to make handrail parts from template to finish#woodworking #carpenter #handmade #knowledge
What is the measurements of the area......? 4 feet by 4 feet?
It was about 5’ x 5’ Spiral stairs are bound by different codes. It has a 14 sided column and hand made nails
How do you make these face molds?!?
So think, an ellipse is a cylinder cut on an angle. The face mold is a segment of that ellipse. The easiest to begin to understand is a rake to level 90 degree wreath. The items needed are simpler than you would think. The plan view of the radius at the center line of your hand rail. The angle of the rail and the total rise of the hand rail between the start and end of the wreath. This is an awesome use of trigonometry. It is also ancient knowledge. Many of us and including my shop just started this year using CNC’s. A part of me is sad that I don’t do it all by hand anymore, but it allows me time to do other things.
@@Manhandswoodworking thank you.
Can you do something on how youbget your face moulds?
They are elliptical lines. We generate them in auto cad but you could do it by hand. Look up George Ellis Practical Handrailing.
If you go on like that, sooner or later you´ll save some time on manicure ;) My tip is that you try to keep small parts together in a row, and cut them to length afterwards. Much safer, and also less tendency to tearout in the endings. Fgs, be careful with your fingers, they earn your bread and butter, and they seem to do a very good job!
15 years of shaper operation trained by a man with 50 years experience gives you confidence in your methods. Small parts do always offer a challenge though. Man hands not mangled hands 😁
I really do appreciate your skilled work, byt what´s the point in uploading in such upspeed video? It´s almost impossible to register whats going on, which is a shame! Please slow down :) Great work👌
It just took days of time and I was trying to pack it all into one video. Thanks for the compliments and support
Hi how to make the color of the wood same as the color from the water wipes?
Enhance the beauty of any color wood with some clear penetrating stain. After that has cured use some polyurethane or other clear coat to make it shine.
@@Manhandswoodworking any brand or product you recommend?
@ryanc9839 there are so many kinds. A all natural and easy one to start with but needs re-coat occasionally, go with tung oil. Easy penetrating stain with many different colors, use tried and trued Minwax. Clear coat, Ive always preferred polyurethane. It’s easy, you can do many re-coats quickly, it dries fast, and is very durable. The main thing to remember is you can’t put an oil based anything on top of a water based finish. You can put water over oil though. Lastly follow the directions and allow proper curing before more application, be careful with the waste rags 🔥, proper ventilation, use a sample first, and you should only sand up to about 120 on the raw wood, and 220-320 between coats. Happy woodworking
Nice work 👍🏼
Thanks for the visit
OutKast while you work, what could be better 👍🏼
Yes sir! It fit that pin router sound pretty well too.
❤❤👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Thank you
your work is awesome! keep it up
Thank you very much.
wow, you got it going on!
Thank you, it’s a tough job sometimes but it always feels good when we finish an amazing staircase.
There is a time in your future where you will be called "Lefty"
Super cool
Is that a ShopBot? How is it holding up for you? And have you thought about a 4th axis indexer for your wreaths?
Yes that our shop bot 3 axis. We have had it for about 12 years. Does a great job for what we use it for. Easy to have a router in backup if the one goes bad. We have considered upgrading to tool changer and spindles but for now it does great. We also have a 4 axis, no videos yet
i use that at daycare
Wood shops are full of tools good for toddlers 😉
Excelente, muestren más de ese tipo d trabajo ...
Yes I will. I am not afraid to share knowledge!
Stunning. Please show us more of your finished masterpieces.
Hi, nice videos, i'm watching from Chile. How did you make the piece you push?
I cut the notch on the bandsaw to match the thickness of the trim
Nice work. I like the clamping jigs. I have a Mennonite friend who manufactures a lot of hollow columns for porch posts and pedestals. He uses a special vise-grip with roller chain welded to it to wrap around the staves. Has barrels full of those clamps.
I love what you’re doing brother, your stair work is exceptional BUT I can’t watch this! I hope it’s cgi or camera trickery! I CRINGE 😬
Thanks for commenting and showing love. I love shaper work and all the thrills that go with it. Very few understand the techniques I know to shape wood safely as CNCs are now taking over. It’s only risky if you can’t pull it off 😉
@Manhandswoodworking, unfortunately, you can only pull it off until you can't. Fingers don't regrow
If you came to my shop, I could show you all the things we do and teach you how to do them and you would be on my end telling people it’s fine! Best wishes and safety to you all!
I love “simplified tangent railings” DiChristina lives on! Go for it brother 👏 best of luck to ya and WATCH YOUR FINGERS 😬
Sadly I only just really started documenting this stuff in more detail. I have carved and made more than I can remember in the last 15 years.
Stacked self supported curves and elliptical no less! Quite the undertaking, definitely not for the faint of heart. Where are you located brother?
The Washington DC area. This was a great one. Dang pre-finished treads too! Another one for the record books 😁
very nice
Thanks very much
what program do you use for those templates and angles?
The method used to calculate all the angles and facemolds ”elliptical shaped template” is basic trigonometry. We use auto cad to lay it out for precision and then plot them in a printer. Essentially it’s knowing the angles of the stairs leading into and out of the part you’re making, the total rise between those points, and the radius of the center line you want the handrail to follow. Think like this, an ellipse is nothing more than a segment of a cylinder cut on an angle.
This is exactly the type of thing I’m trying to get into, where did you learn to make curved staircase? Any book recommendations?
I’m a third generation carpenter, who came to work for a great stair company 15 years ago. The best is having great teachers that aren’t afraid to share their knowledge and pay your tuition. Try some of these even though the wording can be outdated- A Treatise on stair building and handrailing, Modern Practical Stairbuilding and Handrailing by George Ellis, and Designing Staircases by Mannes.
can you give me instagram or facebook
Cool. You boys need a dust collector.
We get paid by the pounds of dust we make 😉. The dust collectors there, it’s just that we have to move the machine out into the middle of the room. Happy wood works to you
I understand , could I email you with a few request ?. Thanks
Hi, what’s your company name ?. Thanks
I don’t like to advertise that really, but I will tell you the company has been in business for fifty years, and we provide our wood work predominantly to D.C. metro area.
Great job , ingenious way of making the inside stringer . You have a very practical but thought out process . I’m learning a lot from your recent stair videos. Thanks for sharing
That’s awesome to hear! This is why I started posting. Glad you are able to learn from my content. Hoping one day I’ll have time to make cleaner narrated videos. Until then I’m still just cranking wood work out every day! Happy and safe wood working to you!
This would be so much more interesting if your video gave us ANY CLUE as to what it was doing!
Noted, I’ll try to capture the spinning cutter head next time.
Beautiful staircase!
Thanks so much. It took a lot of work!
Me gusta quiero aprender
You can learn how to do this if you just try! Find a teacher and brush up on your geometry and you’ll have everything you need. If you want to, you can learn any skill. You must just keep tying and accept failures as lessons along your journey. Thanks for posting a comment.
Buen trabajo 👍
Appreciate the kudos
Mis respetos. que creatividad!!

Thank you very much. Best wishes to you and your family as well.
Esto lo hice yo hace 40 años pero mejorado con un punto de apoyo de circunferencia en la sierra cinta y salen todas iguales para una escalera espiral
As with many things they are fading away. These techniques like you used to do are some of the best to create solid wood wreaths.
French heads 😮 When I was 16 in my first year apprentice I seen the guy use one lost his thumb doing a ramp exactly the same fk that F
It’s only dangerous if you can’t pull it off 😉. Proper training with tools is of utmost importance when they are so dangerous. Shapers like this one in the video are amazing tools. I love running the shaper to make so many different kinds of things.
@@Manhandswoodworking Hats of to you not having a go at you. Just saying my experience dude We are both in the same trade I do all geometry and wreath making by hand So please don't think negative comment Respect from me hanDRailer
No worries, I feel no disrespect. I know exactly the dangers you speak of, and I keep those thought near so I don’t make mistakes. Happy hand railing I’d love to see more of your work. The stair in your profile pic is masterfully made!
Specialised stuff! And a form of practical and technical art 👍
Thanks very much. Some trig, some art, and some effort! Feels like people are loosing basic skills to computers every day. Who is going to build your roof or make your handrail…..we will see. Price is going up the fewer who know what we know!
Excelente 😊❤
Thank you very much
See you all Friday
nicely done! been there, almost as big but I'm sure it was just as big of a pain in the ass as yours. ;)
Oh yeah it was at least 400 pounds. 1-1/2x60x26’
@@Mugsvideo damn!
Nice work !!!
Thanks, takes a pro to know a pro
Now show what happens when you use one of those shitty plywood push sticks we used to use while cutting a 16' piece 😛
Nope nope nope
You made the CNC look a lot faster that it really was :-P
If your not thinking about what would happen if you jump of that then your either not a male or normal
Hahaha, we should add pool at the bottom and go for a dive! This would also be fun if it was a slide. Seperatly I’ve always like stairs like this for parties. You can talk to people easily on different floors. Or throw or drop party favors up or down!
@@Manhandswoodworking Or empty beer cans 😛
it's definitely unique and gorgeous!
I think so too!
That's cool
Thank you, and on to the next one.
I’d be high af and be in the hospital by 9am
Haha this stair actually ascends to cloud 9. The first step onto a floating stair can be a little trippy! 😉
