My Gemini 3200 catamaran needs new centerboards. In this video I show how I fabricated the first replacement centerboard from four 8' long 2x10 boards. Using dimension lumber makes a stronger centerboard than plywood, although plywood construction would be easier. Not shown are the attachment points for the centerboard control lines. I used two 1/4" x 3-3/4" stainless steel eye screws at the en...
20210610 Quick, Simple Repair for Broken Car Radio Antenna
Переглядів 1 тис.3 роки тому
This is a simple way to repair a broken radio antenna on a Chevrolet Astro without dismantling the dashboard and dealing with difficult to access wiring connections. The same method should work on many car makes and models, as it deals with a common failure mode. It involves drilling out the broken threaded stud from the antenna mast and base, tapping new threads, making a new stud from a machi...

This shows how to repair a centerboard line on a Gemini catamaran by installing an eye screw under the winch drum. Gemini centerboards come with three undersized pad eyes to which the lifting line is attached. All three had broken and a previous owner had drilled a hole through the centerboard and tied the line through it. The line broke and I replaced it but simply tied the new line to the loo...

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Glad you had insurance! What do you think your boat was worth before the lighting strike - $35k? Take care!
Thanks. I think $35K is reasonable, though I've seen them as high as $49K.
Which model Gemini is that. 3400? Nice video. Sorry to see her go.
It is a 3200.
Nice video. There are a couple of o rings in the handle parts that seal the water out there, we had issues with the o rings. And the screw tightness can help this but it can make the handles tight to use.
Nice work.
Hey there, do you happen to know where I can find a used barge like the one in the video?
No. Maybe check with local dock companies.
That looks good to me..
Do you know the size of the hinge bolt? Also owner of a 3200 and trying to figure it out before I pull them out!
The pivot bolt is 1/2" in diameter and 5 1/2" long.
Do you know the size of the pivot bolt for the center board?
The pivot bolt is 1/2" in diameter and 5 1/2" long.
I wonder how many high tech digital clocks will still work 300 years from now.
Nice video and narration sir. Very helpful.

Thank you so much. This is a very thought out video. Just what I needed.
Thanks for your kind comments. I'm glad you found it useful.
Does anybody know how much juice I would need to run this for instance what battery size
I couldn't find a direct answer. Unfortunately the unit isn't labelled with its amperage draw. The installation manual indicates the max power usage as 7.1 watts. That's just over half an amp on a 12 volt system. Any 12 volt car or boat battery will run it. How long it will run depends on the capacity of the battery and the on board charging system.
Great step by step - im still trying to figure why ball-bearings are dropping out of mine, but having seen this, im pulling it off in the morning and finding out. BTW. can't believe I just donned my oculus quest to watch a how-to. :-) well done. what did you shoot with?
Glad you liked the video. It was shot with a JVC GS-TD1. Ball bearings falling out are a sign that the retaining ring is broken, possibly from having the belt too tight or from forcing the wheel while the clutch was engaged.
May I ask please when using the clutch lever does it have to lock over the top of the little lugs each side of it … I took mine apart and I have broken bits inside the inside little plastic lugs with threaded metal inside that are there to hold the metal holding plate in place Kindest wishes
Yes, the clutch lever should gently slide over the lugs on either side of it. Otherwise the clutch is not fully released or fully engaged.
@@MrFgd3 Thank you 🙏
Very nice video Thanks for putting it up. Very good instructions… most don’t come off like this… the ones I have seen seem to get frozen on and we’re likely over tightened
Very nice to watch 😊 Thank you for sharing Kindest wishes. 🙏⛵️☀️🌟🌎🙏
Beautiful filming Thank you for sharing 🙏🌎⛵️🌟☀️. Shared with Gemini friends. I hope this ok. 🙏😊
Thank you from the Uk 🇬🇧 for sharing 🙏 Kindest wishes To you and all 🙏🙏🙏
how long is the dock?
50 feet.
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Looks dangerous
No more so than any construction project for those who know what they are doing.
My belt was even worse!! It came out in little tiny chunks and a whole pile of strings wrapped around the drive gear. Thanks for the insight on how it works.
Glad it helped!
Thankyou for sharing this. Makes me want to cry that his 1717 clock has to be retired before it destroys itself. Hope this one continues for another 300 years.
That is sad news. For more information about the Nostell Priory clock visit the National Trust's Clock Work page: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nostell-priory-and-parkland/features/clock-work

smh... hope your dock is still there.
Oh, yes. It's doing fine.
What’s the issue?
Smh at your name. Why wouldn't it be there?
any chance you could send photo of the barge set up please kevin.northendrepairs@gmail.com
I don't have any photos, just what is shown in the video.
Your video was great and explanation excellent. You should make more video's. Thanks
Miss you Capt clay
I have the same transducer and am wondering how the sonar mapping of the bottom works witht this setup. Have you tried it? If I mount this transducer on the stern, it's going to get destroyed because my dock bottoms out on mud at low tide.
Quickdraw Contour Mapping works very well. Because my boat draw 18" and the transducer is mounted in the bottom of the hull I specified a keel offset of -1.5'. When I am surveying the bottom I use the recording offset to compensate for the height of the tide. If the tide is 3' above normal I set the recording offset to -3'. If you are surveying a lake bottom where there is no tide use the recording offset to compensate for high or low water the same way. The only difference is lake levels don't change as frequently as tide levels, so you can operate for more than an hour before you have to recalibrate. The only problem I have encountered is in shallow water the unit can't find the bottom. The bottom is too close to the transducer. I try to survey those shallow areas when the tide is at its highest, but there are still some areas that are too shallow. The shallow spots are the ones I care about most, because that's where I might run aground. If you're looking for bottom features where fish might congregate that may not be an issue for you.
@@MrFgd3 Thanks so much! Would you happen to know the thickness of your hull? I'm planning on trying your method. Also when you installed the transducer, did you set it in some silicone to keep it in place? Or is it just resting in the tray you made?
Hull thickness is about 1/2", to the best of my recollection. I replaced a through hull fitting about ten years ago but I don't remember the event well enough to give you a better answer. When I installed the transducer I just placed it in the tray and filled it with water. Before that I tried to bed the transducer in silicone. It didn't work and was a real mess to clean up. I considered making a top for the tray but haven't found it necessary.
@@MrFgd3 thanks for your responses. I'm going to need a lid, because this is for a sport fishing boat, and the water in the bilge does not get or stay very deep at all and the boats knocks around quite a bit. Again thanks for the video!
Thank you sir, much appreciated.
Hi, I don't know your name yet ... My name is Marcelo Freitas, I live in the city of Praia Grande / Sao Paulo / Brazil (goo.gl/maps/vgjkS7DkQ2BvtNdv6). I just bought a Garmin EchoMap 54CV just like yours, so I got to know your youtube channel. I haven't installed it on my boat yet because it's far from where I live. I just bought a 20 foot sailboat (my first oceanic sailboat), it is small, but I will be able to travel between the islands here in Angra dos Reis / Rio de Janeiro (where it is supported). My dream is to go around the world, but here in Brazil we do not have many options of large sailboats and we can not import used boats. I plan to go to the US and buy a used or abandoned sailboat to continue my dream. One day if we have the opportunity I will tell more about my life ... Thanks for sharing your videos and experiences with us. Strong hug and good winds ...
Nice to hear from you, Marcelo. I'm sure you will like your new Garmin EchoMap 54cv. It's a great unit. If you install the transducer on the transom as the manufacturer intended the installation should be quite easy. Because my boat lives in the water I wanted to protect the transducer from bottom growth with the installation inside the hull.
Hello Lord ....... ???? .. kkkk What's your name? Thank you very much for replying to my message. I want to install the transducer from the inside of the boat. I only want to secure it with silicone. I bought my Echomap through Amazon.com, a friend brought it from New Jersey to me in Brazil.
Hi, Marcelo. My name is Fabbian Dufoe. I tried installing my transducer with silicone but it didn't work. That's why I built the little water filled box for it. Perhaps I wasn't able to remove all the air bubbles from the silicone. Would you like to share your email address for further discussion of boats and sailing?
Beautiful place Congratulations on the video, thanks
One would think adding hardware to the top of the board would extend the board downward, which is apparently not true, so thank you for pointing this out in the video.
Hear is a cute idea , this is treated lumber you can butt those boards together on the rails put two nails in each then screw em down . Next quick draw a chalk line down each side rip off the excess the wood . The wood will shrink leaving a perfect gap between each board . The one thing I love about this is they have no real crane just an A frame set up to hold pies and a pump and a hose and a probe
very nice, where do you find these people ???
I'm reading "Harrison" by Jonathan Betts. Thanks for posting this video, seeing pictures in a book is one thing, a video is better.
What is the price for this please??
$6800 plus permit fees in 2016
I haven't built any dock for less than $35,000 in three years. That's an unbelievably great price. That wouldn't pay one welder in Texas.
@UCOEAJErm7hW0m_28Gqf2g0Q, could you tell me the name of this piling contractor?
