Higs Boson
n a seminar held at CERN this week, the ATLAS and CMS experiments presented the status of their searches for the Standard Model Higgs boson. Their results are based on the analysis of considerably more data than those presented at the summer conferences, sufficient to make significant progress in the search for the Higgs boson, but not enough to make any conclusive statement on the existence or non-existence of the elusive Higgs. The main conclusion is that the Standard Model Higgs boson, if it exists, is most likely to have a mass constrained to the range 116-130 GeV by the ATLAS experiment, and 115-127 GeV by CMS. Tantalising hints have been seen by both experiments in this mass region, but these are not yet strong enough to claim a discovery.
OK, BUT WHAT IS THIS?
The Higgs boson is a hypothetical massive elementary particle that is predicted to exist by the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. The Higgs boson plays a crucial role in the Higgs mechanism responsible for breaking the electroweak symmetry of the Standard Model . If shown to exist, it would help explain why other elementary particles have mass.It is the only elementary particle predicted by the Standard Model that has not yet been observed in particle physics experiments.Theories that do not need the Higgs boson also exist and would be considered if the existence of the Higgs boson were ruled out. They are described as Higgsless models.
The Higgs mechanism explains why the W and Z bosons, which mediate weak interactions, are massive whereas the related photon, which mediates electromagnetism, is massless. The Higgs boson is expected to be in a class of particles known as scalar bosons. (Bosons are particles with integer spin, and scalar bosons have spin 0.)

    Such a big genius from such a small country... ❤️ Serbians should definitely proclaim him as a Saint for all god that he did for the humanity, even though he had lots of enemies and obstacles.

    I watched this on tv at least 15 years ago. I still remember how impressed I was seeing the liquid cooling. Discovery was also airing a video with, I think he was a Spanish scientist working on artificial intelligence. It was run as a short clip in the commercial brakes, would be nice to see also that one.

    Yes, light exists -- self-evident. I won't stand under the sun on a hot day (in somewhere other than the misty isles) & argue with a fool about whether or not light exists. Who is this "we"? Now how does a useful explanation prove that something exists? Wud it not be wiser to say, "This is the best explanation I know of at this time, but it is subject to revision"? You have seen phenomena when this or that happens, but is it wise to insist that its explanation is certain?

  • @Dianoiastur
    @Dianoiastur 11 років тому

    No, there's no absolute truth theories, but light exists, it's a fact. I can see the screen of my computer because there is light and light are made of photons because we call photons to those "quantum things" we use to explain the behaviour of light, so they have to exist. We cannot probably know how they really are, but they exist. I didn't see the photon torpedo but I've seen the phtotelectric effect, the compton effect and other phenomena concerning photons...

    Did I use the pretentious pseudoscientific WE? How did Atheism get into this disgustion? I ask what justifies those who had nothing to do with the discovery of adopting the WE in the infamous "WE KNOW" phrase?

  • @Thunkful2

  • @Thunkful2
    @Thunkful2 11 років тому

    Diano, Do you really have any reason for believing that photons exist except that someone told you so? & maybe you saw a photon torpedo on Star Trec. How much of our understanding of how things exist is based on blind credulity, accepting what men say? (BTW, in the US we don't study maths, but math). Are we dealing the absolute truth or tentative theories?

  • @Dianoiastur
    @Dianoiastur 11 років тому

    Photons, particles of light, have no mass and no volume and they do exist. (...do they??) But I agree with you, you cannot really understand those theories if you don't study their maths, but I think you can have an idea of how it works and that is important...

    Science is the path we take to truth? Does that make sense: "Human knowledge is the path we take to truth"? Who is this "we"? How do you know that science is a path? How do u know that science is the the path to truth? How do u know that man's path leads to truth?

    I'm sure you yourself appreciate the invention of medicine, and the computer allows you to transmit your negative comments at a fraction of the speed of light! Yes theories and ideas will change, though most are build upon each other. It looks as if our math is on the right path, seeing as how Higg's prediction paid off, rather accurately too. Science is the path we take to truth. "Absolute" truth is only referred to in fictional books, safe to ignore that stuff.

    Lets face it, those of us who care about this stuff aren't "lads", we're geeks, and glad of it. Otherwise, I meant "cheers" (raise a toast even) to Prof. Higgs, the others who made it possible, and maybe even a brief moment when you celebrate your race is capable of something wonderful. But thanks for the snide remark, Buzz Killington. Christ's sake.

    Why not realize that while man has made remarkable discoveries & achieved technological success in producing products, like cell phones & computers; all science is, is flawed human knowledge; largely the best way one knows to explain things at the moment. Theories will be modified & discarded. New theories are ever coming. Who is so foolish as to think that physical science yields absolute truth?

    Is it reasonable that something exists that has no mass & no volume? Is this beginning to sound like spirit? Now can this really be understood without a great knowledge of math? How much math does one need even to understand the theory? Does anyone who posts here have that math education?
