I saw all the shows in this series when I was 17, I was impressed and it was perhaps a life-changer for me.

Awesome episode I watched when I was in college. I still recall the Auschwitz portion. That blew me away.

There is something about watching Boronwski walk into that pond that shatters me every time. It clenches my jaw, brings tears to my eye and knowing this was made brings hope to my soul for a better, stronger, welcoming and loving future.

This was a quote I read somewhere, I forget who said it, but I believe it is the most succinct description of the true nature of religion I have ever heard. The Nazis had no specific religious convictions per se, but their dogmatic assertions were a form of religion in the wider sense of the word i.e. "We have the truth. Follow us. We will save you."

@matiu0nz Regardless of the root cause, those in power appeal to the religious beliefs, or to other unprovable ideological claims, e.g., Nationalism, Xenophobia, etc... in order to convince people that actions such as genocide, jihad, the crusades, and violence in general are justified. As a result you can't separate the ostensible cause from the actual cause; without the irrational belief, no one in power could convince the average person that these various actions were in their best interest.

@drfoxcourt as far as I know nazi political party didn't have any religious affiliations. Also, looking at communism, jihad, genghis kahn, crusaders and their attocities. I think it's all just people after power and control, maybe hiding behind a banner of religion, also maybe using religion as a tool to control. But the root cause is people+greed .. not religion .. imho

I have rarely heard a better argument against religious dogma and claims of absolute truth. I shall be, to the end of my life and anti-theist, determined to demonstrate that religion is the utmost in totalitarian horror. Anyone who says to me they believe in God, well I'm OK with that. Anyone who says they know what God wants, I shall fight against their inhuman idea.

Terrible, absolutely terrible. At least we can learn from this awful event and ensure it never happens again.
