OFF-GRID Water System Installation on Our Homestead | DIY Project in Southern Italy
Join us on our exciting homesteading journey in the beautiful region of Southern Italy as we take on our very first, exciting DIY project - Installing an off-grid water system on our homestead.
Without access to the communal water grid that many take for granted, we needed to come up with a sustainable and efficient solution to provide water for our tiny house and for the land that surrounds it. Join us as we dig trenches by hand under the warm sun, update the water pipes and show you every single step of the process involved in creating our very own off-grid water system, which will very soon be powered by solar panels. (This time around it was simply too hot outside to install the solar panels, but don’t worry, you will see us do this in the upcoming videos!). This is when we will take the water system completely off the grid and make it self-sufficient, ensuring that our homestead operates independently.
Join us on our first DIY project on the homestead, where we make lots of trial and errors, mistakes and share our honest reflections, as we take on this off-grid project, making the first steps to bring our abandoned land back to life and creating a self-sufficient homestead. We are going back to simple living, self-sufficiency and connecting with nature. Our Italian countryside homestead is surrounded by ancient olive trees and we're working hard to make it a haven for permaculture and off-grid living.

    The part I didn't get re the pump: Before you adjusted the pressure, water flow to the outdoor tap would run for a bit and then stop because of low (almost zero) pressure, so shouldn't the pump kick in anyway?

    • @anotherhomestead
      @anotherhomestead 3 дні тому

      i know what you mean, it didn't make sense to me at first either. because we opened the tap at the top of the house, the pipe from the tap to the pump remained full of water. the resulting pressure in the pipe due to the gradient down to the pump was 2.1 bar and the pump only switched on at 1.8 bar. so i had to increase the switch-on pressure of the pump to 2.2 bar. i noticed it because when i opened the lowest tap, which is the closest to the pump and has the lowest gradient to the pump, the pump switched on without any problems. i would have liked to have drawn it for you, but unfortunately i can't comment with a picture.

    congratulations for the effort you put into digging the trench, but know that the tank in the attic is made of asbestos, I advise you to replace it with a plastic one or there are resins that can be applied with a brush, and then paint it both inside and out , to avoid coming into contact with asbestos

    It's a shame you didn't buy your cable already pre-installed in the tube. Remember that for future projects, as it's not more expensive than buying it separately... Normally 2.5m2 for plug sockets in 25mm tubing (conduit) and 1.5m2 (square millimetres) for lighting circuits in 16mm tubing. Good luck with your project and UA-cam channel :-)

    If I were in your position I would definitely connect the ground wires, you already have them and you can easily knock an earth spike in next to the house, it's way safer, especially on such a long cable running with the water pipe. 👍

You persisted and you made it happen, that is what is important. Digging the trench was never going to be an easy task, I always underestimate how much time it's going to take as well lol. Well done for getting water to the house which I'm sure means a little sigh of relief. It is a massive undertaking to make your property water self sufficient and fire proof, but once done, that land will become a little paradise and offer security for the future. Obviously it is going to be extremely difficult to do that work by hand. and this is where an experienced earth moving contractor will be required if you want to see the property completely transformed within 1-2 years. It's daunting, but you'll probably have a lot of fun designing the property with the right knowledge. How exciting. for you.

    Your property is very beautiful! :) You've obviously put a lot of thought into your plans to develop it into a wonderful little homestead. With your plans to create a perma-culture garden, don't forget those wild pigs will tear up any/everything you plant if they find access to it. Even fencing may not be sufficient as they will dig under or break through some types. Good luck with you homestead!

    The ugly English name, broom, for the beautiful plant called Ginestra in Italian. It makes beautiful and good smelling yellow flowers. It could be used for its fiber. There might be companies in Italy that uses it to make fabric. It could be an economic resource. Think about it before clearing.

    The potential is huge, congrats 🙂! I'm managing a similar project in the Liguria region. Little suggestion, maybe you did it already but double check the real estate registry of the municipality about the existance, status and compliance of those ruins and caves, before investing time and money in them. I don't know how relaxed the local administration is on building permits but these could be a pain in the ass anyway.

    Those caves could be great to store your liquid gold from those olive trees :-) Be careful with increasing the height of the small ruin #2 because that means you'd be adding built volume which requires all kinds of permissions. The other cave/cellar could be a perfect summer bedroom, it's most likely a lot cooler than in the house.

    This could turn into something spectacular. The combination between permaculture and hospitality is a great way to also earn some money to invest in the homestead again. But boy you have found a golden opportunity. My humble advice would be to invest in a small digger and a mini tractor/mower . My past experience has shown me that these 2 tools are incredibly valuable for clearing roads, creating paths, clearing around the ruins etc … Also I would suggest to start with the roads and clearing the land first. It is so much easier to bring in materials and such for the construction. You guys are young. In 5 years you will look back and realize how much you have accomplished. I will follow your journey. It’s a beautiful place ♥️
