My Near-Death Experience with COVID-19 & the Healing Power of Nature - Robin Hanbury-Tenison
On today's episode is one of the last great remaining explorers of our generation, Robin Hanbury-Tenison, OBE. On the show we discuss Robin's remarkable story of surviving coronavirus, his incredible explorations and the healing power of nature.
Back in March 2020, Robin was one of the very first patients in the UK to become seriously ill and hospitalised with COVID, and spent five weeks in a coma in intensive care.
Needing a ventilator and other equipment just to keep him alive, doctors gave Robin just a 5% chance of survival. Hospital staff even made the phone call to Robin's wife on a number of occasions suggesting that the end could be near.
However, in a miraculous turn of events, Robin was wheeled in his hospital bed outside to the healing garden of Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where he finally regained conscious and knew he was going to survive. Robin cites the healing power of nature as being the thing that saved him, and talks at length in the podcast episode about how we can all benefit from nature's healing properties.
A mere 5 months later Robin climbed Cornwall's highest peak, Brown Willy, during some of the worst weather the area has ever seen, in order to raise money for a new healing garden at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Robin raised over £100,000 for the cause and the garden is now in use at the hospital.
Robin is a fantastic example of defying the odds in the harshest of circumstances, and I think we can all take some inspiration from his grit and determination to survive.

Jordan, every once in a while I think about your story, especially because I live with loved ones with addiction issues, and your story, while difficult to revisit, gives me hope for those that I love. I am so grateful that I got to meet you for a brief time, though I'm so sorry I feel like I saw what was happening in the beginning and didn't do more, though I guess there was nothing I could have done. I'm so happy to see these updates and how happy you are now!

I’m currently getting to the point where I’ve realised it is an addiction. With me for context I lost my brother when I was 5 and due to that I got kind of coddled as a child and didn’t get out much ‘ have any social interaction so it made me get brought up as a very shy.. non confident lad. I first had coke when I was 19-20 and it made me get out of that shy.. awkward shell and allowed me to be able to talk to people on a night out and that’s what done it for me. 2 year ago I was spending 300 a week and ended up cutting that down to 40-8p a week and now due to situations im back onto 300-400 a week alone. By myself. And have stopped seeing friends. No one even knows about this. I just don’t know where to go from here.

I’m 24 and can completely relate with her. Booze and cocaine destroyed me very quickly as this disease is extremely progressive. I’m beyond thankful to be 6 months sober today. I didn’t look right, talk right and didn’t act right. I also blew an absurd amount of money on coke during my addiction ($220 for an eightball every week). I thank God each day for my sobriety!

It's funny how being wealthy / materially safe while suffering from that made you feel guilty and think "I'm privileged I shouldn't dwell on that, everything should be okay, why am i being like that, etc". I was the embodiment of precarity : had to run away at 16 in another country, was on the streets, had to manage finishing school and get to university all by myself, bla bla. Meanwhile, depression began to be more and more crippling, and I was feeling fucking guilty too, like i was sabotaging myself. What was running through my mind was that I didn't have time for that and couldn't allow all those painful/crippling things because I *had* to be functioning, and work, and study, and eat, and pay my rent and... pretty much that lead me to take drugs just to power through it. I couldn't afford a competent doctor for a while also. So although I can imagine it can be sort of more confortable to not have problems knowing how you're gonna eat the next day, you still have guilt no matter what, either you think you shouldn't feel that way cause others got it worse, either you shouldn't feel this way cause you can't , and also " look at people around you they re doing it, WHY CAN'T YOU.". Both cases, it doesn't help. EDIT : Oh fü, iT WAS ADD ? The twist.
