Lorna , thank you so much for this, its a little known subject. Im the descendant of Scottish planter Thomas Elliott and his union with a free woman of colour from st Elizabeth Jamaica. This was also in the 1700s. He had 8 children with her , unfortunately he did not do much for her as his white Scottish wife was with him in their home in Jamaica and he eventually left with her and his legitimate children and returned to Scotland. In Jamaica this kind of story is common knowledge, but not so in Scotland it seems. In St Elizabeth and now also in London and the USA (as many of his descendants came to London and the US in the 40s , 50s, and 60s), there are literally thousands of living descendants of Thomas and sarah the freewoman . Its a very very common situation in the parish of St Elizabeth especially.

I was given my great grandfather’s WWI service medals a few months ago. It turns out he was a Lovat Scouts and then the Cameron Highlanders. I believe he wasn’t a highlander but from Skelmorlie. He did work on the land and with horses.

As ever a really interesting video. Most especially since I was born and brought up in Fort Augustus and always knew about the pioneering work done by the monks in the Abbey to bring electricity to the village. My father worked on the schemes (dam building) and later as a painter with the Hydro Board while his brother worked at one of the power stations.

Is it possible to discover how towns got their names, we can do it in NZ but your history goes back much further, does anyone know how towns/cities derived their names?

What a wonderful talk and more to come, yes, always listening and learning so much about Scotland - just wish they embraced this format here in NZ, by educating our locals. Have a lovely weekend.

Good Morning Lorna, found the talk very interesting, we had County Clerks in NZ, their brief was similar but not the same as the broad sweep of the Scottish ones,. Ours focused on the roads/ bridges. in the rural area - for the County Council, However the townships (urban areas) managed by the Town Clerk and the Borough Council ( ie Mayor and Councillors)- with roads, rubbish , water, waste water, parks and reserves and libraries and community facilities such as swimming pools etc. Isn't it interesting how these administrations evolved. Now it is all combined into a District Council.since about 1995 I think.

Another fascinating talk, as a matter of interest, when you do the research, and find themes ie., poverty, unique businesses, battles, schools, engineers, builders etc etc., Do you note that there is information about that issue in a master register?

A great episode.. especially for us based in the town. So much could be learnt from the past however, at present there is a distinct lack of local jobs, amenities and basic infrastructure. A beautiful town which needs someone to step in with strong management plans. Thankyou for this brilliantly informative lesson.

A great insight into the Northern Meeting. It's worth noting that the Northern Meeting Rooms had a serious fire in January 1936, but again were restored - only to be knocked down for the Council's modern vision of Inverness. Princess Margaret had to wave out of the windows to a crowded throng in the street, and an early incarnation of the Beatles played there. It deserves a plaque!

Another fascinating talk, I learn so much every time, tried to check out the Uncle who helped them with the radio (you said he was a surgeon in NZ). But could not find him......yet. Will keep an eye out for the name in my travels, will be down in Oamaru soon.

Thoroughly enjoy learning all about Scotland, you do a wonderful job. Back home in NZ now - just wish we had this mechanism for sharing our history here. Learning about Scotland before I traveled there meant I was already familiar with many events and issues of the past. Consequently my trip was much more meaningful.

Cleverfeets. . Love it In the Highlands, when I was a child, it was a mapmap. Of course the normal name for a mapmap was never uttered! Very superstitious were the highlands. Yet often a mapmap's paw was carried in the pocket for luck. I'm wondering if you've heard that expression. Gives me grief, thinking of highland language fading away

Such and interesting episode, - really cuts to the heart of all the personal stories and ensures we do not forget what people went through for the greater good, there were some very brave people out there. Bags will be getting packed soon fro my trip to Scotland, I will try to call in at the Archives center, if things work out. Hard to imagine 'summer' - this has been a really cold winter here in NZ. Look forward to listening again on my return from Scotland. Have a lovely summer break.

The age of the sharpshooters was quite advanced and that proved very useful to me. When, at age 61, I sought another extension of military service, I wrote a letter justifying the extension that, amongst other things, reminded readers of the case of 2/Lt C. B. MacPherson who at age 62 deployed to France with the Lovat Scouts. Je Suis Prest.
