I have read 80 books in 2023 so far... this is my TOP 10
I have been teetering on The Three Body Problem for a little while. I think I'm going to commit and get it now that I see you rated it as an S, given the other books you rated an S.
The magpie and moonflower murders have always caught my eye. You describing as a meta-whodunit makes me more interested!
I have really enjoyed your content so far. I wanted to start with that because I have to say that I really disliked Heat 2. I read it because I like several of Meg Gardiner's books, who is the co-author with Mann on Heat 2. I thought it was shallow in plot. It had tons of action, yes, but I found it ultimately directionless really. Also, I did not think the actions of the competing crime crew (trying to be non-spoiler here) were very convincing or believable. It was very over-the-top and seemed like the action and vulgarity were prioritized instead of character development, sub-plot explanations, etc. Admittedly, the story might be much better as a screenplay than a book. I look forward to the adaptation.
I just found out the serpentwar is also set in midkemia
Good to see the full version!! 😊
I was gonna say on the other one, it seems like it cut out in the middle. But nonetheless, this was a good video. I'll see if I can do the tag, probably in November or December because I'm doing my spooky readathon right now. Thanks!
Looking forward to it!
Really great idea for a tag. East of Eden is one I want to get to at some point. Also congrats on 100!
Thanks, man! Yeah, I'm excited for East of Eden, and a bit anxious, I know it's a difficult book
Holi, Fede 🤗.
I struggle to read(or enjoy and of my hobbies) during the summer. Illuminations sounds great! I’ll definitely add it to my future reading.
I'm the same! idk what is it with summer but I really can't do a lot of reading, glad it's over lol. And yes, I REALLY liked 3-4 stories from Illuminations
@@fedebooks I’m excited to see which ones I like!
Holi, Fede 🤗. Saludos 😃.
I haven’t read this series but, now I’m interested!
The books are so gooood!
Every fantasy author trying to be Tolkien: 1,200 pages with epic battles and hundreds of thousands dead. Tolkien: Has 280-page books, with the first 40 pages devoted to the genealogy of hobbits and the history of Bilbo's silverware. Avoids writing graphic scenes and violence.
Lol exactly! I can appreciate some of the modern fantasy series but the majority are just not that good in my opinion
That Le Guin edition is pretty swag and The Sparrow is a perfect answer for an emotionally heavy book. Thanks for the vid and the tag !
Good choice Mary Doria Russell. I haven’t read this one but last June I read Doc and Epitaph she wrote. It’s historical fiction but I can highly recommend it. It’s about Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp.
Oh I never hear of that one before, I'm going to add it to my list!
That looks like a beverage that tastes real refreshing during a hot day. Thanks for tagging me.
Dang that Earthsea book really is fire, I need to get me a copy too!
I have Don Quijote on my shelves! I really hope to read it next year after I finish my current 50+ book TBR. So happy you did this tag!
Hello! Don Quijote will change you! It's a beautiful experience, and yeah I saw your most recent video and I'm glad you're clearing your TBR! I need to do the same lol
Yo todavía no me decido a leerlos. Saludos 😃.
Thanks for the tag! I always give your videos a watch.
@@shaunholt hey thanks man, likewise!
can a webnovel be good? read lord of the mysteries
I read a book once that was from an alien perspective; distinctly not human. Yet all their nouns for things were based off the human world. I found this unhelpful for the narrative. Never heard of this book but it does sound interesting. The ant like characters sounds like a lovely bit of imagination. And that can go a long way.
Holi, Fede 🤗.
So many great books on your shelves! Excited to hear your thoughts on the Murder books.
@@Maeve_Ever_Books hey thanks! Also I saw your recent tag video and I'm tagging myself lol, looks pretty fun!
Holi, Fede 🤗.
Props to you for going with Stormlight Archive haha. That Melville edition looks great. Also I highly recommend Once and Future King, great vid!
The Melville edition is great, can't wait to read it, I've been hearing a lot of good thing for Once and Future King, it's giving me a lot of Ivanhoe vibes but with the Arthurian legends lol
I discovered G.O.T/ T.W.I and Brandon Sandersons T.W.K completely organically...no one recommended them to me, i had never heard of the authors i knew nothing about any of these series when i first discovered them. And in my humble opinion Pirate Alba's T.W.I will probably go down in history as the greatest fantasy book of all time. I know thats a bold claim, and yes i have read robert jordans W.O.T and joe Abercrombie and robin Hobbs series..but there is something about the characters and the scope of T.W.I that is beyond belief. Also no book has ever made me laugh and cry so much in single series. I cannot rate and recommend this book highly enough. Its a shame that its length is somewhat of a barrier for some people, and the errors and slow build up of the first book are not ideal, but its so worth it. I hope u keep reading the books. And as others have mentioned the audiobooks are even better. Good review. Keep up the good work!
The video audio's a little quiet I think. I'm not posting a midyear freakout tag this year, one because I'm having such a bad reading year, like I've only legit completely read maybe one book and I forget what it was. I haven't done any booktube videos in a while. 😢 I've been busy doing other things. ... Crusader Kings 3, Skyrim, Fallout 4, reading/editing my own books, and hanging out with my conure.
@@shaunholt Hey Shaun, yeah I tried to fix the audio but I think it didn't work that well, I need a microphone And I get you man, this year has been pretty slow for me too, with two jobs and all that, I've been missing your videos but I know life gets in the way, hope the reading slump doesn't last tho! Also, I'm interested in reading your books, I didn't know you had any published! And speaking about crusader kings, I just started playing crusader kings 2 with the game of thrones mod and it's dopeeee
@@fedebooks Haha that's funny about you also playing CK. I thought that was an obscure reference. I haven't played anything in the series until a few weeks ago, and have gotten my butt kicked until now. I'm like 300 years into the game as the Byzantine Empire and have restored the Roman Empire. I'm thinking of calling the game a win, because there's really no challenge anymore to me, just picking apart my smallest neighbors one by one. Kinda bored and thinking of starting somewhere else. And the book of mine I usually suggest to people to start out on is either Egyptian Demise or Keeping Creed. Egyptian Demise is where my writing style begins taking shape (published two books before then), while Keeping Creed is a little less daunting a read, although the first book or two in that series is a bit more steamy on the romance, which I've definitely gravitated away from.
Hola fede!
It’s always so disappointing when a premise sounds great but, the execution just doesn’t work. Death in Her Hands sounds fantastic!
Holi, Fede 🤗.
Never a bad idea to re-read Watchmen
Hola!
Hoy emepecé a leer Un hombre llamado Ove 🤭.
Good thoughts. I'm also really excited to see what Ruocchio writes outside of Sun Eater. I believe he's mentioned it might be more traditional fantasy.
Omg I didn't know he had said that, I'm excited for that as well!
It deals with mental health and war and its consequences. If you just think that "adult" = "sex" then yeah, his books won't be for you
Listening to these books was a game changer for me! Love them!
Actually I understand, the only way I was able to finish Oathbringer was with the help of audiobook, I liked how they have a voice for each protagonist
Ahhhh a Mets fan I see… you should just join the dark side
Hahahaha neveeeer
All Sanderson books feel the same: Young adult type characters with middle grade level sensibilities stuck in an adult fantasy world.
I totally agree
I have struggled with Sanderson in all his series EXECPT for Steelheart. It's shorter. More concise. Still has some of the problems you cited, but longwinded and unfocused are not them. Not a super satisfying ending in my opinion, but still pretty good.
You know, I haven't tried any of his short stories or novellas even, I might do it just to compare how he handles long and short-term storytelling, thank you!
Holis fede!
I totally agree, i picked up the hardcover first edition way of kings back when it came out. I was excited to jump into a new epic world from the guy who finished wheel of time. Pretty much my favorite series ever. I was surprised when i just could not read another page, i was utterly bored and i was mid-book. I even scanned chapters ahead, does anything seem to change here? No theyre still in an endless war. Shallan, she had the vibe of a side character from the get go and i could not understand why we needed any of her story at all, i found myself skipping her chapters. Kaladin was only slightly more interesting by virtue of being male id wager, there was at least the possibility of something happening other than talking. Dalanar, this guy is just a name to me, someone other people in the book talk about. He seems interchangeable with all the other battle commanders in this boring war. Kaladins backstory, again boring, something about his father wanted him to be a doctor yada yada. I tried again on audible just because im like maybe its me? Everyone seems to love this series. It was absolutely mind numbing, i was never awake for longer than 10 minutes, id wake up someone would be talking about dalanar again. I continue to hate the way of kings. Im pretty sure i got words of radiance at the same time bc i had credits saved up. I haven't touched it.
Thanks for the comment! Btw, I'm starting to buy the Wheel of Time books lol In my last video I bought 7, I really want to start it but idk if I should start with New Spring or The Eye of the World. Anyways, going back to Sanderson, you are totally right, the worst thing he has going for him is that he is just boring 80% to 90% of the time, we have a finite number of books to read in our lives, It's just not worth it for me spending my time reading the entire cosmere, maybe the younger generation has a different approach and needs everything "connected" I really don't know
It's generally considered/advised to read New Spring around book 10, or even after the whole series. Just start with Eye of the World.
Hello! That is actually good to know, man. I was going to start with New Spring because I saw someone doing it that way, but yeah, I'll do it publication order
"Without metaphor, mystery, or hidden messages" Did you read the epigraphs before each chapter? They are all mystery and hidden messages. I see many people criticize Sanderson for his writing style and I don't get why. So his writing doesn't read like Charles Dickens. So what? Every Charles Dickens book sucks ass. People criticize his prose like they know what they are talking about. The definition of "prose" is: written or spoken language in its ordinary form, without metrical structure. So by that definition Sanderson has the best "prose" because he writes how people actually talk. Also what you describe as "filler" is full of foreshadowing and character development and mystery and hidden messages.
"Every Charles Dickens book sucks ass.", yeah buddy, you are definitely in the wrong side of book tube lol
Saving the best for last I see haha. Glad to have you join us
Haha you know it, I would be starting that one this upcoming Monday
Hot take alert damn. I appreciate your contrary opinion though. I loved way of Kings and thought oathbringer was mind numbing lol
Hahah tbh when I was making the video I didn't think it was going to be a hot take until a saw all the reactions from the fans lol
