Only this week did I discover John Prine which led to “In spite of ourselves” and ultimately led to this gem of an artist. I feel bad to say that I’m just now finding out about Iris Dement but she’s got me crying in my living room slow dancing with my baby girl. Music is so cool like that, for real.

She wore that choker for someone special

I already loved Iris' music by the time I watched the final episode of Northern Exposure. But now, when I hear this song, I can just see the moose walking down the empty street, and that image haunts me to my very soul.

This is from her Other Voices, Other Rooms album, which one a Grammy in 1984 (I think). It’s covers of songs by songwriters who influenced her. The whole album is terrific.

Its been a long time since I've heard this song. Its sad ptetty and sweet.

Beautiful song, however it dawned on me why my boomer father who grew up in the central valley of California loves it so much. It is a great metaphor for how that generation on the left looks at the world. They are ready to burn it all down with their passing and offer no hope for the future generations. I refuse to look at things that way. May heaven help me, my children will succeed and thrive beyond what I had.

I performed this song at my mother's wake. Everytime I hear it, I can smell the scents of Pioneer County in California, which is where my parents lived the last ten years of their life (and what became my second home). That was a long time ago now, but this song transports me back to that time like a time machine.😢

If life is made up of memories then Iris hits the right notes and the story continues on and on.....nothing to fear all will be ok in the end.

You ain't alone stranger

When I hear this it reminds of the small country town near our farm in Colorado. My mother grew up near the town & went there for groceries & shopping since the 1930's as a child. She's gone now. I moved away after college. There's not much left to the downtown any more except a couple of bars, the library, 3 churches & empty buildings. The elementary school is still there, but the high school is consolidated & is in a neighboring town. The streets never used to be paved except for the highway that ran thru the middle of it. It now bypasses it. It's melancholy to me when I hear this & when I go there, which is seldom today. Great song & singer.

At first I'm thinking her voice is kind of shrill but it just gets better and better the more you listen. I miss her performances with John Prine. Thanks Iris and of course Emmy Lou. Songs that make you feel a melancholy.

Simply magical

First discovered Iris on Transatlantic Sessions, singing Sweet is the Melody. Made a VHS tape to listen to again and again. When UA-cam came along, I found it along with all her other music. Brilliant.
