Well, you know,as a big Outlast fan,i wanted to watch the video because i wanted to see the points of your opinion, and well, you're right, it's not of the best horror games. When i first watched it on an italian UA-camr (since i'm Italian but whatever) i found it really good because it was one of the first horror games i ever saw and it wasn't attracting me because of his scariness but because of his story,in fact,i must say that the story behind it, the Murkoff Corporation, the MkUltra project and all of that stuff has always intrigued me for some reason, probably because Outlast was one of the first horror games i ever experienced.😂 But yeah,if i'm going to be honest,to enjoy the game you need to know the story otherwise pretty much everything won't make sense, the documents are useful to understand why we get there, why the Murkoff was doing what it was doing and what the walrider is really. Another fact are the enemis which again without knowing their backstory are some patients who will try to kill you inside the game. The endings are not great but are necessary:the ending of the main game is necessary for the dlc one,so yeah, the main game ending wasn't the best but it was absolutely necessary to make progression inside of the story. So, basically? Outlast is an horror game who focuses too much on it's story rather than the horror himself, and i've played Outlast 2 and Outlast trials and don't expect Outlast trials to be more scary,in fact,it is not. But hey, thats your opinion,i respect it,and hopefully Outlast 2 will manage to put your overall opinion on the series in a better light than it is right now, have a good day! Raze,a Murkoff Corporation employee
I really love outlast, but respect your opinion. But of course, I do feel the need to point a few things. So with the jumpscares, I don't really feel like they are that bad. I am someone who hates jumpscares. I can never play Five nights at Freddy's purely because of that. But outlast has a lot more than that, such as the crazy psychopaths running around trying to kill you. The darkness mechanic was really unique to this game at the time from what I can tell, or at least made it more mainstream, and as far as I'm aware it sort of brought popularity to the whole not fighting back against monsters deal, whether you personally like that or find it scary or not. With the game's aim, getting out of the asylum. I feel like you kind of answered that yourself, when you pointed out how he saw a soldier ... impaled on a spike, warning him to get out while he still can, and there are disembodied heads on the shelves, countless bodies. And a big guy who can pick him up by the throat and toss him through some glass almost killing him. Yeah, I think he would try to get out ASAP. Very understandable, when he wouldn't have realised just how brutal it would be like there. The night vision is really cool, being a feature this game pioneered with and that alone kind of makes this a classic, as you can get close up to the enemies that relentlessly chase you down in the dark, and see them wander around cluelessly for you while hoping they don't accidentally wander straight into you. I love the notes. I don't really get how they feel out of character since all we know about Miles is that yes he is a journalist, but he's not orthodox by any means, such as going to places other journalists would consider too dangerous. Also, these notes are just notes. They're not exactly getting copied into some official newspaper or something where he would need to be formal, this is just his own thoughts. I imagine most reporters probably have to act somewhat differently to be more presentable and formal than what they normally are like. The notes are also really funny to read imo, since they bring away some tension to have a brief laugh, and while I can see some issue with that, I personally like that in games, where you can alternate between being scared and just having fun. I do agree about documents. I personally never really read them. Outlast 2 is still worse though for having basically an entire gospel scattered around as sheets. But, I do skim read them, to see if they say anything important to the story or characters. For example, a document about Eddie Gluskin to reveal a bit more about who he is. The door mechanics seems more like an individual player's perspective. As in, how you like to play the game. Perhaps, for some players, they like the ability to do it just because it helps them feel a little more reassured. I haven't used this mechanic in the first game myself but in outlast trials I have used it because there are door traps that need you to open them slowly in order to disarm them from the other side. With the chasing, again this feels more like a personal preference. For players who don't really know the game well, they can run into dead ends or other enemies, so don't really know where they are going so running just attracts enemies to your position, and you may need to hide to get rid of them so you can focus on doing an objective that requires you to be in the area. But besides that, I personally really like just hiding in a chase to regain my breath a bit. Also, in outlast 2 and trials they add stamina to your character so you can't just keep running (and in outlast 2 you have to heal with bandages, otherwise you move slower). In fact, trials seems to counter most of your gameplay gripes (not saying it's perfect) since there are traps that force you to be cautious, stamina and objectives that mean you need to be careful around enemies, and the map layout doesn't have a strictly A to B situation for the most part so you cannot just run. But yeah, the finding an exit and fabricated chases is a good point. It's why I find it hard to replay outlast 1 and 2, because when you know where you are going it's no challenge. But, when playing these games for the first part, at least personally it was much scarier and you don't really work that out. The enemies being the same makes sense, because they are all humans. They aren't some incomprehensible monsters like in resident evil or silent hill. They are just a bunch of psychopathic humans. So, the main thing that makes them memorable is their personalities and what they do to torment their victims. Still, yeah it does mean the gameplay can get repetitive somewhat, which is another reason why I didn't really find outlast replayable. Outlast 2 and trials do however have a bit more variation with enemies. Especially trials. For example in trials, big guys break down doors quickly but are slower in chases compared to regular enemies, and there are other abilities other enemies have, including one that kind of breaks the normal chases in outlast, but I won't spoil that one. The walrider is really cool imo. I get your points. The nanomachine ghost is a bit weird, and wasn't needed. For the difficulty, again personal preference. The people I know including myself started it off on more normal difficulties and were happy enough, and still got scared lots. Outlast 2 is quite similar to the first, with similar sorts of objectives and linear corridors, but it is set mostly outside (with some exceptions, especially later in the game where it gets really dark and claustrophobic) as well as in another location I won't spoil which is important to the story. It also leans a lot further into the religion element, providing it with a somewhat confusing story. Outlast trials is very different. It is essentially a series of maps, with different objectives with each one to solve, and these objectives require a lot more effort than in the first and second ones, sometimes featuring outright puzzles which is quite fun. Your review isn't bad by any means, I just tend to ramble on even in youtube comments
Thanks for taking the time. I felt like the point of the game (getting out of the asylum) was presented maybe a bit too fast. There isn't much of a buildup to the atrocities happening there. All the time it seems like Miles is just getting deeper and deeper into the asylum instead of getting out which contradicts the objective in a way. The repetitive objectives (fuses, generators) don't help The reason for you liking the notes is the exact reason why I did not like them : D. Didn't think about the doors the way you did. Fair point, but nonetheless the prompt giving away which doors are not locked is still a flaw in my eyes. It makes sense for enemies to be similar, but it does not make sense for Chris Walker to take just as much time to burst through the door as it is for a regular variant. Or for Eddie Gluskin to be even slower than Walker to a point where he barely catches the player with a messed up leg. I think I am going to give Outlast 2 a shot. From what you describe and what I hear from other people, possibly it will be the game that I will like more. And if that ends up being a good experience then Outlast Trials might end up on my list of games to play too.
@@XXXEPHIROT Okay that cleared up those points, thanks
Rage bait
not even listneing, ur tripping.
I want to say that I absolutely adore Outlast. I have so much time in this game, and the other game. So, I feel like I can say that Outlast definitely isn't as good as it is represented. It mainly scares the player with random jumpscares, has an easily missable story-line, and overall feels rushed. I did not watch this video because I don't want to just watch one of, if not, my favorite game get shit on for ten minutes, but through the comments, I can see some of your points. The story, when you look at it without any documents, is bad. It just seems very cliche and basic. Spooky place, spooky monsters, lots of blood. I can see that you don't want to collect and do research for a game you don't like, which is completely fair. The story is very jumbled when you don't know any of the backstory of characters, Murkoff, or Project Walrider. It was not a good take on Red Barrels' side to leave out such important things in easily missable collectables that are very long and boring. I saw someone talking about your take on the Walrider's design. I can agree with that. At base look, it's just a ghost, a skeleton, or a massive blob of blackness that you can't even see unless you're right in its face or you're using your night vision, and yes, it will always be under looked do to Chris and Eddie's design as the big-bads of the game. And I'm not trying to get you to like Outlast since that's your opinion and perfectly fine. You shouldn't have to like a game that other people do. I'm just a nerd who wanted to throw his input. I'm sure that you had good points that weren't discussed in the comments, but I'd just prefer to not watch the full video. :)
Thanks for this comment! I think the intentions I had were a bit misunderstood while making the video. Was trying to present points which do not make this a good horror game but I suppose people received it as being a hater (probably my tone voice). It got people talking so that's still pretty cool. It still absolutely is a good game to play, holds up amazingly graphically, I think the camera with nightvision is a nice touch. Its everything I mention in the video, but of course people will only mention what triggered them personally : D. Someone who agrees with my view on Outlast told me that Outlast 2 is acutally way better, so I might just have to give it a shot and possibly make a video on it!
@@XXXEPHIROT In my personal opinion, I've always liked the first one more. I've had an odd hatred for II until recently replaying it. I still prefer the original, but the second is definitely a great game. The story is even more jumbled around than the first and a bunch of new mechanics are added, but overall, it's still an amazing game.
Can you do one about a good horror game like this? I like your voice and would like to sleep to your videos lol
Check out my SCP video - ua-cam.com/video/mpJ5sBgBQ08/v-deo.html It is long so it might be good to fall asleep to. And I definitely want to make more
@@XXXEPHIROT got it saved for later and left a like! Thanks man!
Finally someone speaks the truth about this god-awful game. Outlast is everything bad and wrong with horror games nowadays. No combat, so you have no pressure to make choices in the game, which in turn also makes you overpowered. Hide, and enemies will rarely, if ever, find you (but you WILL get bored waiting). Run, and they'll never catch you. Die, and you roll back to a checkpoint just around the corner. And the horror comes just from the pathetic jumpscares scattered throughout the game. You're never afraid of what's going on in the game, just in fear that it'll have something jump in your face and scream when you least expect it. It also has some very badly crafted jumpscares. I don't even watch that many modern horror movies and yet I got to foresee most of what I got before I gave up on the game.
Chill, it came out in 2013 and it had a team of 10. Jesus. The game is a great game. It has perfect tension, and the night vision adds a creepy touch to. You probably quit 10 mins into the game.
@@JoJoJosuke36 why do you keep bringing up it's release date like it makes things somehow less awful? Silent Hill came out like 25 years ago and also had a team of 10, and way worse tools and they still came up with a brilliant game. And no, sadly I kept playing this for about an hour before I got bored of it. Hiding from enemies was too much of a chore, and it's not interesting at all. Alien Isolation came out just one year later, in 2014, and perfected it. Amnesia came out in 2010 and still managed to oppress the player without combat just by having expendable items and the sanity meter, which didn't age as well but was still way better than whatever Outlast came up with.
I was just about to correct you that lack of combat is not always bad, but you did it yourself. Amnesia absolutely nailed the lack of combat and the enemies were way faster than you so it made sense. It was hide or die...
@@XXXEPHIROT yeah, I'm not a big fan of games without combat, because the point of it is to pressure you. Resident Evil was scarier because you knew that the game would expect you to use the shitty combat to get through the mansion. It made you choose between spending ammo or health, with lots of randomness involved, so you couldn't just rely on your skills. It makes you make though choices. No such thing in Outlast.
@@du0lol Silent hill and outlast are both good games in their own right. Amnesia, in my opinion, is the best horror game created. I feel as it is terrifying with it's psychological elements. I respect your opinion on outlast, I am personally a fan of the game.
I'm not even going to watch this video. You are wrong just based on the title.
real
while i am not agreeing with some of the stuff he said, it's one of the few vids i've seen that has something negative to say about outlast and for that i liked this vid he had the balls to express his thoughts about a well established game keep up with the videos you are doing great
"Hey everyone, look how cool and different I am."
NPC comment
That was not at all what I was getting from this. Different though? Absolutely yes. He's one of very few to admit the objective fact that this game wasn't very good, and was massively overhyped because of how let's play tubers made it seem at the time.
@@shaunpocalypse honestly, I didn’t even watch the video. I just enjoy instigating conflict out of boredom
Described himself with the first comment
Worst take imaginable
nah fr tho
I can't lie this is probably one of the worst takes on a video game I have ever seen. You say the story sucks but you clearly didn't pay attention. You didn't care to read the documents, and the Walrider isn't even a ghost, it's a machine, it's the whole experiment that Murkoff is conducting on the patients. But you make good points with the tripping jumpscare and Eddie's death which felt very underwhelming
Worst take and yet I made good points? Would understanding the story change the poor and forgettable design of Walrider? He/It will always be overshadowed by Chris Walker or Eddie. I did not pay attention because the game doesn't make an effort for you to pay much of an attention. Documents are entirely skippable which means the story of Outlast doesn't play first fiddle. Some love it, some don't. I fall into the second category.
@@XXXEPHIROT It's fine to not love Outlast and find other enemies more intriguing, but to say it is not a good horror game is just wrong. When I first played the game I watched my brother play it and he didn't collect any documents, yet I understood the story just fine. Also keep in mind this game had a small team of 10 while games you compare it to, such as Silent Hill, had a team of around 50. And understanding the story would definitely help understanding the Walrider, since you refer to him as a ghost when he's really thousands of microscopic machines influenced by one of the patients. It explains all the horrible experiments conducted on the patients, and even Dr. Wernicke explains it at the end so regardless of whether you read the documents or not, the story is still presented to the player. And yes, it is the worst take, yet you made good points; even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Silent Hill came out in 1999 and Outlast in 2013... We can play like this back and forth... You're missing the point like a broken needle about Walrider... It doesn't matter if he's a ghost, machine or Santa Claus... He's forgettable and overshadowed by characters that are supposed to be inferior.
@@XXXEPHIROT Regardless of whether you like the Walrider or not over other characters, that doesn't mean Outlast is a bad horror game. It just means you don't like one of the characters over the other.
It feels like you went to see avatar and saying i dont like the weird tall blue people
Which is a fair thing to say
@@XXXEPHIROT it is if you were asleep half the time, you should have read the documents or watch some lore video to understand the story more
man the poor doors
Tension isn't scary. Jump scares are scary. When people say "Building suspense is better", they're not talking about something frightening. They're just talking about a mood.
Silent Hill is absolutely frightening yet it barely uses jump scares, but when it does it is perfect... Like I said they are not inherently bad, but they are rarely done right.
Are you goofy? Tension adds a certain unsettling mood which can be more effectinve than actual scares.
@@XXXEPHIROT I agree with the silent hill take.
@@XXXEPHIROT Being unnerving doesn't make someone actually scared. We call things frightening or scary but they're not. That is an incorrect word.
chill out it came out in 2013
fine...
right? i havent heard praise for it at all recently but calling it not good just completely overlooks the impact of it and the longevity of where we are now. the game is changed now sure but it inspired so many good things.
yeeaah good points, I never got the hype of this game also, long time no see, I thought you'll never post again lol
After the many, many times I've beaten this game it still freaks the bejesus out of me.
The fact that SCP 096 is impossible be beaten or made stop running after you is lore accurate as he is the same in the file on SCP website. Same can be about comedy, many SCPs are taken seriously yes but if the SCP has a "-j" after it's number (for example SCP 666-j) then it's a joke. I would also advise you check the character of doktor Bright, he is many times the embodyment of comedy but he can be serious if it's really required, he also has list of over 300 things he is not allowed to do. And also on youtube there's a guy who ckecked many things you type into the anomalous coffe machine and yeah, some of these are wild, like for example "god mode"
Thanks for letting me know. : )
