You are exactly right, IF the business does not have a license AND insurance if they are offering a service, especially moving, if you did not ask and do not have the copy of their license @yurikuts is spot on, you will be looked at as incompetent for not asking for the license (and insurance) to protect yourself.

This is beyond true. Parents had a "cousins" moving company do the moving for cheap, between Raleigh to Buffalo. Took a whole year in small claims court to pay for the damage they caused. Don't expect good service when you don't pay the appropriate amount. Does $2000 less pay for the headache when you findout your furniture is beyond repair?
