ASL: OLD SOUP RECIPES: Tomato Soup (1884) | Hearty Golden Chowder (1975)
ASL: OLD SOUP RECIPES: Tomato Soup (1884) | Hearty Golden Chowder (1975)
ASL (American Sign Language) interpreted version:
I decided to try TWO historic soup recipes to celebrate National Homemade Soup Day, which occurs every February 4th. The first is a tomato soup from Mrs. Lincoln's Boston Cook Book, published in 1884. It contains an ingredient that makes me wonder: will it enhance the soup, or make it taste, um, nasty? The second is called Hearty Golden Chowder, published in a leaflet put out by the Kraft Foods company for their TV Special that aired on January 8, 1975. BOTH soups surprised me in taste, BOTH are very simple soups, take little time to prepare, and are also vegetarian!

Vintage Craft: Milkweed Bird Ornaments & A WW2 Connection!

This homemade Christmas ornament made from Milkweed pods goes back to at least the 1970’s, but if you saw my video of Christmas Tree History at Genesee Country Village and Museum (GCVM), you know that our ancestors made ornaments from things found in nature, so I have NO doubt that they could have possibly made something like THESE cute birds. Making Raisins the 19th Century Way!

Did you know that seedless grapes were not commercially grown in America until the late 19th and early 20th century? Up until that time, our ancestors had the laborious task of removing the seeds from the raisins by hand, and thankfully later had a handy gadget, or raisin machine, to aid in the process. Hey everyone- I've got a pro tip if you decide to make the tomato soup: Want to leave the soup chunky and not have to strain it? Use DICED tomatoes, then tie the peppercorns and cloves into a small piece of cheesecloth before adding to the tomatoes and water. After adding the veggie/cornstarch mixture and the soup has finished cooking, take the cheesecloth bundle out and serve as is! Let me know if you try this method, and thanks for watching!

*I looked up Parkay Margarine and our Walmart carries it and on Amazon by the case you can still get it.* So great to hear this blast from the past. Yep tomato soup with Cream is how I always eat it. Condensed tomato soup I would add 1/2 milk 1/2 water. Great info about the Baking soda to be added in 👍 For something to be considered an Antique it would be 100 years old. I would like the explanation of what is considered Vintage. That is a real tricky answer on that.

I could only imagine the cloves making it taste weird since it's a Christmas-y pumpkin pie kind of thing. But wow, it really made it taste good! Thank you for this fantastic video. I have read in period sources that seeding machines, like the one here, were troublesome to use, so this video is showing the "true story". But trust me when I say, the machine works faster and cleaner than seeding the little devils with a paring knife!! For future reference, wetting the raisins means allowing them to plump a little. The seeds let go much more easily. Also, note that once seeded, they need to be used right away, so you can't "seed ahead". Muscat raisins, which is the variety this little machine is designed for, are incomparable in taste and sweetness. Neither Zante currants nor the seedless Sultanas can possibly compare with the amazing Muscat raisin.

@@HandsIntoHistory Adding you to a playlist to share on my community today. How are the FACE MASKS coming along? Think you mentioned your making them. ARE you going to have a video about them?

Thanks so much for the add! Face masks will hopefully be in production by the end of August (2020), and YES, will have a video showing how I used my circa 1884 treadle sewing machine in the invention of the mask!

Agreed! Chris and all the historical interpreters at GCV&M are so passionate about history, & because of that, they draw people in with how they tell the stories!

I say, "A." Here is a Merriam Webster article about the a/an before "historical".... www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/everything-youve-ever-wanted-to-know-about-historic-and-historical

Thank you for the link to that article! I guess 'an' AND 'a' are both correct--I'll have to remember that! The English language changes over time, so I wouldn't be surprised if eventually 'an' will be considered wrong usage. I'll be sure to mention this in an upcoming video. And thank you for watching-glad it inspired you to hopefully get creative, if not this past Christmas, but for the next!
