After a short period of ownership I compare my new R1250RT to my old R1200RT. UPDATE: I have found the issue with the bike seeming to be a lot harder to get off the centre stand. I had the R1200RT seat set to the higher position, but the R1250RT to the lower position. Raised the seat up to day and the problem went away - who would have thought that changing the seat height by about an inch woul...

Yeah tires can be subjective for sure and when you don't like the feel and lose confidence in your tire thats it...might as well try something else. Can't wait to burn through my factory Dunlop S21 tires fitted to my H2SX...not a fan...switching to the Road 6 GTs as well!
This is a small point but important. When you say you just couldn’t get on with the Metzler’s. It would have been far more helpful if you’d told us which Metzler you were talking about. Metzler, just like Michelin make lots of tires. Knowing which tire didn’t work for your RT would have been helpful.
Good point Gordin. Unfortunately I could not remember exactly which Metzlers they were. I think they were Roadtec Z8, but can't be 100% sure. I know some people prefer the Metzlers, but I just couldn't get on with them. Tyres are such a subjective thing, and 99% of the perceived 'problems' are in our heads, I'm sure.
I've just replaced the Road 5 to the Road 6 GT on my 21 BMW R125 RT, the bike is transformed, it never gave much confidence before, in fact it felt like the chassis had a big rubber black in the middle, absolutely transformed it. Very happy
Hi really enjoyed the tyre review. No bloody awful music, or attempting to be a comedian, and very mature. I bought a new Yamaha MT 07 in 2017. it came with road pilot 3s on. now covered 25,000 kilometers and although plenty of tread in centre the sides are worn out. So am about to have a new of road 6s fitted. So thanks for review and happy riding cheers Steve.
Thanks for the kind words.
Are they not called road 6 now, pilot throws some confusion in there.
I do point this out in the video. Though strangely enough the tyre dealer said they are still listed as Road Pilot 6 on his paperwork from Michelin.
I had the same on a kawasaki SX 1000 Bridgestone battle axe 16 absolutely rubbish, I put pilot road 5s on massive improvement, still running them, will upgrade when I need to ,
Good to see you back on UA-cam. Do you have any trips planned for this year?
Thanks. Obviously the Covid restrictions put paid to making any travel plans over the past couple of years. No definite plans yet but I definitely want to get away this year. My daughter is now at university in Amsterdam, so if nothing else I hope to get a trip over there to see her (and deliver chocolate, biscuits and other essentials).... now when is speedwell on at Assen 😁
It gets hot here in California too...I don't like riding when it gets to 108 degrees...
I have a R1200RT from 2018. I was thinking of buying a new R1250RT 2021. But it had the wrong brand on the brakes. The neighbor drives R1250GS, He has had problems twice with leakage on the front brakes. hayes brakes are scrap ...
I can only speak from experience, and I have had no problems, nor do I know anyone who has had problems with them.
Did that trip with BN a couple of years before you, was brilliant
Great review bud. I’ve just bought a new RT. Is the electronic locking sat nav system easy to fit?
Really easy Mark - it must be if I could do it. I have detailed instructions at www.thetroshinbeemer.uk/offsite/SatNavLock/Sat_Nav_lock_review.php
Happy for you and your new motorcycle. Wishing you lots of fun and many safe miles.
Hopefully 2021 will be the year we get Covid-19 under control and can all go out riding together again!
and when are the next vids out?
I have bought a 1250 having had a short stint on the hexhead 1200 and realising that the bike was great, so traded 2 bikes for the 1250. I also find road mode too soft/under damped but this changes when 2 up - how about you? 1250 is great bike for sure.
nice vids. What time of the year is this?
Nice video. Thank you. Is the new model more quiet with respect to the engine and exhaust?
Thanks Greg. The new model seems to be a bit quieter in town than the old 1200RT. However, open her up and she barks a little more fiercely than her predecessor - possibly when the shift cam comes into operation.
Thank you for the reply. I noticed on a demo ride how quiet it was around town, but when I got onto the interstate and was doing in excess of 70 mph, a different note started coming from the engine/exhaust as the RPMs increased and the sound then resonated in my helmet.
R1250rt booked in 26th May 1st now 7000 mile service.Engine management light on possible software update.Quoted £240 is that about price you paid. Scotland UK.
£254, so similar, but still a hefty wedge for what is essentially an oil, brake fluid and filters change; still ,if it keeps the warranty going I guess a fiver a week is worth it.
@@sootythegeezer6406 That's how i look at it also .Keeps warranty and we have that for 3 years.
Turns out exhaust valve sticky and will be replaced. Have freed off other R1250rt with similar fault but has returned in a short time. Could be a common RT fault.

Great work Paul, can't wait to see more. Hope your all staying safe.
Cheers Mo. I bet you are going stir-crazy up there, not being able to get out on the bike. At least this lockdown will enable me to get the rest of the trip edited ;-)
@@sootythegeezer6406 I'm coping fairly well I THINK. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your footage. just can't find the motivation to do film work just now
Why are you riding with your modular helmet up and not completely locked down? If you fall you will have no chin left? Be safe brother, you have a family to get home.
Thank you for taking us along on your trip!
Great vid, have you got a link for satnav lock pls. I had to put at GS lock onto my XR, got to have it locked man! I'm assuming the lock will also be compatible with the Nav5?
www.oldtimers.si/en/navi-central-lock-ready-for-bmw-r1200rt-lc-2014.html is the link to the lock. Yes it's fine with the Nav 5, but only fits RT models from 2014 onwards.
Good honest review. Congratulations on your new bike.
Hi Sooty. Great vidéo. I have a 1250 RT as well. I have noticed that you have a device that looks the GPS. Can you send me the reference to drk60@hotmail.fr. Thanks a lot. Daniel from France.
No problem Daniel. The nav lock is available from @t. I have done a review of fitting it at www.thetroshinbeemer.uk/offsite/SatNavLock/Sat_Nav_lock_review.php
Sorry link to sat nav lock is at www.oldtimers.si/en/navi-central-lock-ready-for-bmw-r1200rt-lc-2014.html
Hello Sooty, can you please tell me what jacket you’re wearing on this video, I like all the hi-viz, and what do you think of it please?
Hi Grant, It's an Oxford Airflow jacket (about £150 from Infinity MCs if I remember correctly). Keeps the water out nicely, but doesn't seem to 'breath' as well as my old Spada jacket - I tend not to wear it in the summer for that reason, preferring a mesh Dianese for the hot weather.
@@sootythegeezer6406 Thanks for the info Sooty, really appreciate! Have a nice Christmas :-)
excellent Work Paul, Merry Christmas and all the best for 2020.
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it.
Bad karma leaving a machine/vehicle running on fumes...as a motor person, it knocks the goodwill out...
Hardly left 'running on fumes', and not intentional. I think the purchase of 3 BMWs in 4 years has probably created a modicum of goodwill.
Rode a 1200RT and loved it.Haven’t ridden a Goldwing yet,but when I do,that will determine my decision. Both great bikes no doubt.
Good vid. Ill be of to the Picos on Sunday 6 oct. Carnt wait, also going to be my k1600 GA first Big trip.
Have a great trip - hopefully it will have cooled down a bit (in the 40's when we were there - too hot in a helmet)
Really good bike the RT. I’ll be making the same type of journey in a few days to collect my first brand new bike. At BMW Oxford to get a K1600B GA. very excited. You’re new RT looks nice 👍. Enjoying the vids.
Hi Sooty, thanks for sharing your review on this new model. Just like you I have a 2014 RT LC, and I’m trying to move to the new 1250. My first impressions are equal to you, but in my case I did appreciated the softer suspension. I’m an Rtist since the 1150 model, and the RT LC 2014, for me is too though. The RT was always a superb comfort machine, and I always thought that my actual model was too stiff. So for me, is good news that this model is softer (even on Dynamic I use the soft configuration on tight curves). Two questiona I have for you, if I may... 1 - do you felt any difference regarding fuel consumption, towards the old model? 2 - where did you get that amazing cover/sun guard for your BMW Navigator VI. I have a Oldtimer locking mechanism as well and I’m glad to see that it fits this new bike as well 😉 Thanks an I wish you all the best for this new model. Cheers from Portugal.
Hi Sérgio, Thanks for the kind words. It's interesting how opinions differ about the suspension. I think in the UK we are used to a more sports oriented suspension, so the softer (more comfortable) suspension feels a little remote and 'vague' to us - even my wife prefers the dynamic suspension when riding on the back. She says the bike feels less under control when in the road mode. The nav shield is a Wunderlich item - I got it from Nippy Normans in UK, but you probably have an importer/dealer for Wunderlich items in Portugal.
As I have only done less than 1000km on the new bike, it is a bit too early to make an accurate comparison on fuel consumption. I believe BMW are claiming an increase of about 2mpg with the new model, which wouldn't surprise me as the shift cam technology should make the combustion more efficient.
Sooty Beemer I heard both opinions until now. Some say that due to shift cam technology fuel consumption is better, others say that the bike is much more responsive and that increase the wil to push the throttle, resulting on more consumption. If I move ahead with the change, very probable, I will let you know also my opinion. Cheers.
I am working on getting one early next year, the more reviews I see, the more I want it, thank you for sharing your thoughts :) In my test drive, it felt amazing, I used it always in Dynamic. Coming from an Honda Deauville 700, this bike looks incredibly not heavier (even stopped), and of course, the torque and power... my god.... shame the taxes here in DK make it twice as expensive as in the UK, hence not quite easy to get hold of one :)
By the way, can you link the SatNav / central lock thing from the Slovenian guy? :)
Please disregard this, just saw your other video :)
You certainly will notice the power difference coming from a Deauville 700, which is a great bike that has probably served you very well, but is somewhat underpowered for touring (especially if you carry a passenger too). If you get an RT I am sure you won't be disappointed.
Thanks for the ride and the comparison between old and new. I have a 2018 RT and for me, the changes are not significant enough to justify trading up for. I have more than sufficient power available for any and all conditions. As for the Nav 6 locking feature, if you could provide a link to the Old Timers website, that would be very much appreciated. I did a Google search and could not locate them. For the price of this bike, BMW should have made this a standard feature with the central locking. Totally agree with you. Thanks again for the video! Cheers. 🥂
I fully understand where you are coming from - if my 1200RT had only been one year old I would not have traded up. Also, many of the changes to items like the hill start and gear shift assist had evolved over time, so the difference between your bike and the new 1250 would not be so great. Power was also never an issue for me, even two-up with full luggage, but the new shift-cam motor is even more tractable. The sat-nav lock is available at www.oldtimers.si/en/navi-central-lock-ready-for-bmw-r1200rt-lc-2014.html . You have to email the guy to order it. English is obviously not his first language, so communication can sometimes be a bit flaky, but don't let that put you off. He is a genuine guy, and gets the lock sent very quickly upon payment (mine arrived in 3 days).
Sooty Beemer 👍👍!! Thanks!! Cheers 🥂
Thank you for showing me the solution to the stupid non locking GPS!!!!!
You're welcome. Like I said in the video "The solution to a problem that should never have existed"
Enjoy Sooty. As I have said to @Paul Griffiths, best bike that BMW make overall. I'm going to go back this way eventually. In the meantime, my older K1600GT does the job :). Anyone itching to go to an RT, I thoroughly recommend the 1200RT from 2015 onwards. The addition of a wet clutch and liquid cooling still made a major difference. I have owned RTs mostly since 2008. Best of all, a good condition one won't break your bank account. My account was just a little too dry after selling my run around car still... one day roger phipps, one day!.
Save lots of weight and money and go for an oil head. Better mirrors, lower CG, better mpg all with same fairing and luggage. And 110 hp is plenty. I don’t race it.
@@gimmecom I've owned a few RTs. The changes which included a wet clutch were worth it. I always got over 50mpg on my 2015 RT.
I traded my 2015 RT for a 2019 RT 1250. The transmission is much smoother than the 2015, no more clunk while shifting into 1st gear. I’ve only 400 miles on the machine so haven’t opened it up yet. Having owned in the past a 1979 R65, a 2003 R1150R, a 2007 R1200R,a 2009,2010,and 2015 RT, and now the 2019 RT. I’ve ridden thousands of trouble free miles on all the bikes I’ve owned. Perhaps the 2019 model will be my last. But then again that’s what I thought with the previous BMWs I’ve owned!
Last one, ha ha.... that's what I said about my R1200RT.. and the F800GT before that.
You're the first that I know of that was honest enough to say they were 'intimidated' initially about the 1200RT. I say this because your comment echo's my first impression of the bike also. But that feeling quickly dissipated after a few miles and you begin to realize how nimble and good handling this bike is. It feels like a bike half it's weight under power. It still is a handful when pushing it around the garage and you have to respect its weight but other than that, it begs to be in motion and out on the open road. I have a 2018 RT and trading up to the 1250 RT is not justifiable financially but I'd do it in a heartbeat if a won the Lotto. 😁 Congratulations on the new Beemer! Many happy and safe miles!
Brilliant review sir, like you I have just purchased the BMW R1250RT. I agree the suspension in road is a little soft. Other than that I love the bike. Thanks for sharing. You have my sub sir.
I purchased my 2006 RT 1200 in DEC 2005 and put over 80,000 miles on it. Great bike!
Ok where do I get one.

Was your 1200 a 2014 to 2018 model. I'm wondering how big of a difference there is between the 2014 to 2018 R1200RT to the 1250. I'm trying to decide if I want to go to the 1250 or find a great deal on a left over 1200.
Mine previous RT was a 2014 model. The 2014-18 model is still a VERY good bike, which I'm sure you won't be disappointed with. The 1250 is just a little better in many ways - not a quantum leap, but a noticeable difference. Only you can decide if the improvements are worth the difference in cost - and that is best done by riding them.
Congratulations on the new bike. I just joined the Boxer Twin club, I picked up a used 2000 R1100RT.
Well done my friend, nothing like picking up a new bike..
Running in a new bike . ua-cam.com/video/0IRIz5rTgR8/v-deo.html
Did you ever consider the K1600gt and if so why did you choose the RT?
We looked at the K1600, and loved the green GTL version, but my bike is also used for commuting on narrow roads in heavy traffic, and I felt the extra weight of the big 6 would be a problem for me. I also thought I would miss the character of the boxer twin.
Sooty Beemer thank you for your reply. I’m Coming off a 2015 GS 1200 and considering the K1600 GT or the New RT
@@michelangelo3674 K1600 is so much heavier. And also imagine price for maintanence of valves (4x6 for K1600 vs 4x2 for R1200). I am not saying what you should choose, I am only offering a point of view which you might not see.
MyYTwatcher these are great point of views and I truly need to consider the maintenance cost. I also noted that the K1600 value depreciation is much greater. Thank you
Congratulations, it is a great feeling picking up your new bike made even better by good dealerships who understand customer care 👍

Thanks - off to Pyrenees & Picos inJuly.... will be posting videos, so let's hope the weather is good ;-)
Well firstly i am surprised that you know all these red light areas, you naughty lad! The 1250 looks lovely but i have always been put off by the maintenance costs of the BMW's, oh and the price of any new bike, as i was looking in the showroom at Bob Minion's the other day whilst my trusty Honda was in for it's 50 thousand mile service. I will be looking forward to your review of your new bike when you've run it in a bit. I was lucky enough to have a new 2018 BMW R1200 GS Adventure bought for me for father's day last year, it was the best Lego model i've ever built! Ride Safe.
Re the red light district, I also know about the Isle of Man TT course but that doesn't mean I've raced around it ;-) With regard to the maintenance costs, I'm not sure that they are that much higher than many other modern bikes. The more sophisticated modern bikes become, the more they cost to keep running. Above 250cc the cheapest to run bike I ever had was a BMW R80/7 - way cheaper than the Honda 400/4 it replace, but it was a much simpler machine. I'm afraid that a motorcycle is now a lifestyle choice, not a cheap form of transport.
Know exactly what you mean. Did the same as you 2 months ago. New 1250 feels much more polished not that the 1200 wasn’t good. Love not getting the clunk as you select first gear.
