I sort of show things about board games.
Sort of Finspan 1 Star Reviews
Have you heard? There's a new Stonemaier game! Have you heard that everyone is losing their minds? Either you love the idea or you call it a complete money grab. The game is not even out and the reviews on BGG are completely bonkers. Lets look at what people are saying about a game THAT IS NOT RELEASED YET!!!

There's always a bug in the process of making videos, audio problems, framing, mistakes or an uninvited guest. We had to stop and take care of a new friend.

Our yearly tradition... is two years in a row a tradition? Well, it's a new tradition! Isabella and I do our own version of the classic 12 Days of Christmas but with a board game twist. Yes, there is another saxophone solo and a lot of mistakes made.
Sort of Heavy Games
Переглядів 54Місяць тому
There is always a debate about the weight of a board game. I decided to end this argument and make a definitive what game is heavier in my collection. Is Mage Knight the beast everyone says or will a game like Ark Nova throw it's weight around. Watch and find out!

Gamers For Cures is an 18 hour board game event to raise money for Turner Syndrome. www.gamersforcures.com/ I signed up, played a bunch of games and helped raise money. Lets take a look at what I played and then what games I brought home. One of my new favorite games and a bunch of interesting games I now own. Also I was on the Geek All Stars Podcast. How many reviews does it take to get a game into the Board Game Geek top 100? A lot because no matter what, someone will defiantly hate it and will let everyone know. Let's look at the 1 star reviews for Gaia Project.

You know what makes me give 1 Star Reviews? Typos in slates! Why do people do that? Wait... I guess people make mistakes and shouldn't be destroyed for that. Board Game Geek has a list of top rated games in all of board gamedom. Yet there are people who do not agree with others and hand out 1 star reviews and defiantly have opinions why. This video I go through all the 1 stars for Castles of Bu...

There's a ton of it and you wish stores would except it but alas, they will not... trust me I've tried. That's why my picture is on the wall at most Targets in the Triangle. So I've gone through the ol' game collection and picked out 10 of the best (and one not so best) money in board games.

So many board games and what makes one better than the other? Quality of the game? Neh! It's the reviews on Board Game Geek... not really but I enjoy looking at the top 100 and reading the reviews from members that give games a 1 star review. Why do this? I don't know, people are just grumpy Guses and want to watch board games burn.

I'll try to add a bunch of home rules to make it more fun and combat effective, can't just simply give 1 star, lets reinvent it.
You love the punching 🙄 Also love them talking in the background but not me!!!😭😭😭
Thank you! Lol
WE HAD TO STOP FOR THE LADYBUG!
Fantastic!!! 😊😊
@@boardgamecourt thank you, we try… that’s all I can say we do is try.
Lol nice!
Thanks for the analysis! I have a quick question: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
I would suggest watching the 1995 film Hackers. I think they tackled this issue.
The standees are dark in the backside to show facing.. front color image .. shadow the back side of the character 🤓
If you enjoy heavy euros you should give it a try. It doesn’t take nearly as long to play as you mentioned, unless perhaps they were new and trying to learn from the manual. One of my all time favourites.
Also a game on my radar since last Essen! Tell us what you think about it after playing it solo!!
I just finished shooting a game where I played solo. I'm enjoying it, takes about 30.
Great list! I think my number one would be Everdell!
@@susanmichele957 great meeples, unfortunately I do not own.
Great video!
@@boardgamecourt thank you!
If you like Fleet and Three Sisters, you should try Hadrian's wall by Garphill games.
Thank you so much for including Tiny Towns: Fortune in this list! We wanted metal coins originally (and went as far as having pre-production samples made) but the option of screen printing on wood won out.
@@petermcpherson15 thanks for that inside information. With the concept of the game I think wood works for it. I don’t see tiny woodland creatures making metal coins.
Try to play to the demographic a little better my man, many of the people that are watching this are over 50 years old and first looked at the components inside your box 40 years ago and could do without their little brother from the 80s reviewing a $500 game.
35-44 49.7% 25-35 43.4% 45-54 6.8% (my age group) Maybe I am reading the room.
Xia: Legend of a Drift System has metal money, nice feel, course you only get a bunch in longer games but it is nice to see it stack up as a bounty or on the merchant as possible future gains.
those are some pretty sweet coins.
Metal monies are the best monies, every time.
Metal money is the best but also expensive.
Making momey change in a board game with paper money is like spending 20 minutes during an RPG arguing rules. Just unnecessary and frustrating
Also favorite of your videos so far :)
I need change for $20 to pay $3. Do we have any fives? Alright, everyone make change. Roll for initiative.
Kudos to the competitive gaming community who do not let a great game submerge. If left to these one time lickers of every new game, only candy flavoured games would survive.
What kind of candy?
Some people are so closed minded and unfair.
I think they just need a hug or a nap or a sandwich.
I played the original solo and quite enjoyed it
The Avalon Hill version?
@@SortOfBoardGames Dune Imperium base game
I'm in your team: 7/10 for me. Always so funny to see how intense some people are!
@@pascalcharland1403 I know! It’s a perfectly fine game. What do they want?
They are just spoiled by complex looking heavy games and find a game with actual depth of strategy but not that complex bland@@SortOfBoardGames
I found the narration jarring.
@@svunnig (sad walking away gif)
They all are probably forgetting that the full acronym is NPE for negative play experience when leaving reviews. The plusses are how many times an issue came up.
People seem to shy away from actually describing the NPE because fans on BGG might flame them for not enjoying the rules correctly or maybe the "broken" rules were already described in another review and they are just +1ing the issues.
Looked at more reviews and I could be wrong... maybe it's New Player(s)?
I'm gonna say it. Doug looks like anthropomorphic animals but they're all people. Rocko's Modern Life
I met a few of the people who were demoing this game at GenCon a few years back. They were very nice and I still have one of the enamel pins they were giving out for the game. I was surprised to see this video come up on my timeline because it reminded me of it. XD
I love board games. Play constantly. I do not like Root. Why? The startup cost of playing competently is too high. To play Root competently one needs to really understand how each of the factions play, so that you can try to stop what is important to them. Same reason I don't like Bridge - the startup cost is too high. Much rather play Dune, Scythe, Concordia, Puerto Rico, Agricola, Spades, Oh Hell, or the Search for Planet X.
Weirdly I have taught Root to many people in only around 15 minutes and everyone enjoyed and played it just fine. Just requires knowing how to teach the game properly. Thinking that one must know every detail of every faction is the fallacy and pitfall.
The few times I play Root my main goal is to focus on my character. I always remember what a former chief photographer told me once. Know your equipment. Once you know that then you can “break the rules.” In board games know what you are doing then go after the other players. It does have a big learning curve because everyone is doing something completely different. So it may not be your jam. But would you give it a 1.
That’s how I feel about Ark Nova. I’ve seen people take almost TWO HOURS to explain the game. I’ve got it down to a cool 30 minutes teach what the have to know then after a round or two slip in info that is popping up. The first couple rounds are feeling the game out any ways. Use them to teach strategy and end game.
Blink twice
We are sending a panel van to rescue you from the person making you play Root.
There's such a bias in rating scores, 7 is way better than "fine" 😂
@@bazzatron9482 but with BGG a 7 is fine and 6 is meh. 8 is hell yeah, 5 is nah. 9 is WHY ARE YOU NOT SETTING IT UP NOW, 4 is I hate you Todd, you always bring that game. 10 is WHY IS THIS GAME NOT ALWAYS READY TO PLAY!!! DO YOU HATE FUN LARRY!!!! 3 is let’s set the house on fire and purge the world of this existsnce. 2 and 1 are just for mean people to throw shade.
@@SortOfBoardGames I prefer a linear scale. Plenty of the games I design are a 1 or 2, they never get off the ground. Snakes and Ladders is a 1, the players aren't even required. CAH is also a 1, but this is absolutely out of spite - terrible game that sets the expectation for "board gaming" to non board gamers, I would delete it if possible. Monopoly is probably a 3, the game works but the net outcome is that all but one player has a terrible time (which was the initial design intent before it was perverted for profit). 5 is probably games like Pandemic or Forbidden Island - the game works, everyone can have some enjoyment, but all the complexity is offloaded to RNG; great for introducing new players or kids but the novelty will wear off. 7 we're in the realms of deeper games with high skill ceilings and depth that allows both casual play naturally leading into high level play - the modern classics like Catan and the (at least pre-meeplegate) Carcassonne. 9 is for games that are masterclasses in their field, maybe Terraforming Mars - but really anything that bumps stuff from a 7 to a 9 is personal preference. I'm sure some would put Gloomhaven or Mansions of Madness here - but they're too much death by tokens for me. I love the SFG Resident Evil games but some percentage of this is my fanaticism for Sherwin Matthews and the IP. 10 is simply unattainable. It is aspirational. No game will ever achieve a perfect score because it's just not possible to make a game that everyone will love forever, board game designing is not an NP complete field 🤣 That's my take anything. 1 being crap/unplayable, 5 being mediocre/a perfect midpoint, 10 being the appearance of the board game Messiah.
These reviews crack me up man!
@@OverclockedWorkshop thanks Jason, you the man.
The googly eyes on Cartographers Heroes 😂
@@Isabellashere of course, can’t take them off the box.
Stick with teotihuacan until you get comfortable with it. It's one of the greatest of all time.
I’m trying, it’s just a lot and then with learning solo it’s got a curve. Hoping to get it to the table with my group and maybe that will clear things up.
Ha ha! I have a few to add. Frostpunk. You always freeze while starving. This War of Mine. Ouch. :)
"I need friends"... So many gamers and game reviewers can say this but don't! Excellent video, "of" games series is intriguing. I have Raiders "of: Scythia as well as Legacy "of" Yu, and my flgs is going to hold Ezra and Nehemiah for me. I just recently discovered this genere of games and am really looking forward to getting them off of my shelf of shame. Heavyish games in a small discrete boxes. Beautiful. Beatiful indeed.
LOL the poem was pretty good. Not at all what I expected. That's a lot of effort to go to for a one star review
I need a recount. Architects should be MUCH higher on the list
This is what happens when I let the 12 year old do the rankings.
i think, if you have larger area thank you need on tour task number, you lose it, not complete it.2:13
What?!?!?!? That ruins almost all my score. Stupid Jeremy!
Man you sure know your stuff thumbs up
Thank you but I just sort of know stuff.
And I thought I knew all the board games on the market!!! Thanks for the discovery! The only one I know is Gambit Royale and I love it I played it a few times a while ago and it left a great impression. I always wanted to play it again but the guy who had the copy left our game group... Have fun!
We played Great Wall and... it was almost a game. Gambit Royal was close to making it but a game of Tapestry ran long.
Great video and I like you😂 Don't know how you kept a straight face at the beginning 😏
So this clubhouse already has the original game which you had included before this video?
First lol
We’re honored to be part of your recap! 🎉
I think you… invaded it? (CSI Sunglasses gif)
I was scared Tantrum would gut the Whose Turn attendance, but it looks like there was a super solid turnout there regardless!
Where ever I go, the people go.
Awesome recap of a great time! Thank you!
Thanks, I had a blast and played with some cool new people.
It was so silly, I had to laugh all the way through 😂😂
Thank you, wanted stupid and chaotic to give people a larf.
@@SortOfBoardGames you achieved exactly that :D
Love these so much! Get a good laugh each time! Clever idea!!!
After hearing a few designers talk about these 1 stars reviews and listening to How Did This Get Made podcast I got the idea. The Mansions of Madness one is going to be crazy.
A question: Thank you the video. I really love Dice Forge. <3 There is a new scifi board game with die face manipulation where you need to screw the dice face dots. (maybe came out 1-2 years ago). Do you know the name of that game?
No I do not but now I do! I need to do some research.
@@SortOfBoardGames If you find the game please drop I comment. I will also do. :)
I found the game.. it was a kickstarter project, but maybe it is not out.. As I see on the page the shipping is delayed, but wil be out soon. The name of the game is "RONE: Invasion"
Anxious for Waterboarding: The Board Game to come to my nearest retailer sometime soon!
