Commercial Pilot Checkride - CANCELLED!

Sometimes unexpected challenges smack you in the face! Huge Thank You to my wife and Great Co-Pilot for getting me through this. My commercial check-ride had to be cancelled due to a severe injury. Luckily a week later my CFII found another DPE that had a slot available a few weeks out.

Let's build an airplane!

Intro to 66 Aviator where we're going to talk airplanes, fly airplanes, work on airplanes and build airplanes!
Great work! I'm in a similar place with mine too. Getting the struts of the right pressure is certainly a challenge, but it looks like you nailed it!
Depends on the hinge points of the canopy and the mount points of the struts, but mine are 50lbs each. McMaster Carr is a great source for quality struts. Thanks for watching. MJ
I really appreciate your videos! I have a Lancair 235 that I bought about 30% done but there is no help videos. Thankyou very much!
Thanks for your feedback, now get busy on your 235, these are fast little airplanes. Good luck. MJ
Can't thank you enough for this - as someone who's looking to eventually build a Lancair, this was super informative. I appreciate all the detail you recorded and left in, including even moving tools and parts making. The canopy turtle cracked me up.
Thanks for the feedback. I always wonder if I'm boring people with some of this stuff.... now I know otherwise. MJ
Wooo glad to see more progress on the Lancair!
I'm watching this one now 💕🤍👣
Good stuff Mark, thanks for sharing
I noticed your fuel/booster pump is mounted high on the FW. I am pretty sure they are ment to be preferable below tanks ?
Yes, you are correct, the pump works best when it's below the tank. This one has a header tank right behind the pump, and the pump is mounted basically on the front wall, with the fuel pickup under the bottom of the tank. If the header tank was half empty, the pump would be 2" above fuel level. In this case, the engine mount complicated the location and limited where it could be mounted. Thanks for the comment, and now you got me rethinking it all and wondering "could I have put it somewhere lower?" lol.
May I ask what CAD you using ?
It’s NX.
@@66aviator Damn.. Nice!
@@tc_neverstop436 Thanks for watching! Markus J.
You were missed. Your work here is appreciated. Those building the flying tractors now so popular, have loads of resources available. But not many for we flyers/builders of quick, efficient, sexy sport machines. Thank you 😎🎩♠️
I like your comment, a new perspective on the types of airplanes being built. I hadn't thought about it, but you're right, not a lot of composite planes being built out there! Thanks for the feedback. Markus J.
How to build a Lancair and not get killed in process )) Get well soon! 2 more month before CPL checkride is nothing - gives your body time to fully recover and time for studying up and... time for making videos - don't rush, man, health is important, take your time and do get well soon!
Thanks for the pep talk. Yes, the last couple months has been frustrating.... I HATE sitting around! Thanks for watching! Markus J.
@@66aviator u don't have to sit around uselessly, right? designing the panel for lancair is a sitting job and look how well it turned out. Best wishes from Copenhagen
@@M12Howitzer yes, sure is. In fact, just spent a few more hours changing the panel layout. Check out my instagram @66aviator for an updated picture. Thanks for watching! Markus J.
Are you taking your check ride in the Cardinal?
Yes, the cardinal has been my platform for my IFR and now commercial. Thanks for watching! Markus J.
Ouch that's rough... Hopefully that doesn't hold you back any more! Looking forward to seeing more progress on the Lancair.
On the road to recovery..... Thanks for watching Chris! Markus J.
very informative video, thank you
Thanks for watching! Markus J.
Nice video, thank you for sharing. Where did you get the landing gear indicator?
Thanks for watching! The indicator came from Skyman Avionics (you can find them on FB) Markus J.
@@66aviator Thank you. I do not have a FB user profile but I saw that Skylar Thody had some for sale a while back on there. Do you have his contact info? I also looked on Skyman but they do not have any listed right now. Thank you for your help. I love your 360 but I have not seen any videos or updates on it in a while??
Send me an e-mail and I'll pass along his contact info. 66aviator@gmail.com Markus J.
Lancair is gorgeous! Is there a reason for mountng the engine (and the prop! in tight hangar space) while still midway thru the build?
Yes, actually, because I'm now working on the firewall, wiring, exhaust, prop governor, etc, I needed the engine on. The hangar space is a lot larger than it looks in the video. But, I did NOT mount the propeller for that reason, it would take up a lot more space and be at risk of getting scratched or damaged. Thanks for watching! Markus J.
What an awesome channel! Thou tough to find... i think you should use words: "kit plane", "lancair", "building lancair" much more in your video names, descriptions and keywords field under each video for YT to index those properly. Subbed, will be watching your progress! p.s. i LOVE your approach to panel layout, right things are being considered well. Good luck!
Thanks for the feedback. I've added a couple tags/keywords. Thanks for watching! Markus J.
That door seal Looks pretty good also lol.
I learn a new technique from every video you produce. Thanks brother.
That's great to hear. Thanks for watching! Markus J.
What a great vid!!
Thank you John! Markus J.
I’m watching this video and the other owner of our plane calls out our tail number as you are landing. The plane was on the island last weekend. That was a surprise.
It's a small world! There was a lot of traffic on Mackinac that weekend! Thanks for watching! Markus J.
My team helped launch your plane at the end of the Open House today. Beautiful Cardinal!
Thanks Mike!
Sounded like you guys had a little bit of hypoxia there. Great video. Having fun!
See you all there! Don't forget to take a helicopter ride for great views of the grounds. They're located behind the museum. Great pilots!
I’m enjoying your work. Your Lancair is the closest thing to my Skystar Pulsar III, for me to apply similar methods. Not many videos posted about working on fast, sexy airplanes- mostly just the flying jeeps and tractors that are so popular today 😛 Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching, and for the comments. It's great to get feedback, especially positive like this. Markus J. PS: Before the Lancair came along years ago, I had my eyes on building a Pulsar.
soooooo is this about not coming here or coming here. I can't tell if your being sarcastic or not
Just trying to add a little fun and share some of the silly things non pilots think of when they here “Oshkosh”. If you haven’t been there, YOU NEED TO GO! It’s AMAZING!!!

Thanks Ryan! I'll be there, probably Thursday morning thru Saturday evening. Hope to have my Cardinal parked in "Vintage" area. Thanks for watching. Markus J.
Wow ...........Great Job How are they holding up in High winds?
No issue with the wind, they are GREAT!
The real reason your Lancair was abandoned was because you bought a Cardinal and got busy flying instead of building. I have seen this happen before. It is tough to recover from, but I have confidence in your dedication to perfection.
Darn, you caught me... yes, that's right, but now I have to do both!
I noticed more than one Great Co-Pilot helping.
Yes, Taylor showed up near the end and gave us a hand.
I can’t wait to see this finished.
Me too Joey! Trying to get back to it on a regular basis, if nothing else, to keep the videos coming! Thanks for watching.
Next time you fly to GR you better get a hold of me! You were so close.
Nice.

Glad I found your video. I plan on doing the same thing to my '75 177B. Thanks!
Glad I could help! Have any questions, let me know. Markus J.
Seeing this video is going to help me with maintenance on my Skystar Pulsar III, more than once. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Markus J
looking forward to progress updates!
where did you get the cardinal decal on the tail?
I had it made by my Graphics shop. If you web search "Cessna 177 Cardinal Logo Decals" you can find the image and companies that sell them. Thanks, Markus J.
VP-X does wig-wag for you and you really don't need a low voltage light either. Where's your transponder? That EFII system seems like a lot of hassle. With heated seats, I think you're going to run out of power very quickly unless you add a second alternator where your vacuum used to be. You might want to consider moving your flap switch to the stick grip.
Danny, the transponder is a Garmin GTX 45 R - Remote mount, just like the second Comm radio a GTR20. I know the VPX has a wig/wag feature, but I wanted it to be right next to the prop control for ease of use without having to reach up to the G3X. Good point on the current draw of the heated seats, maybe I'll limit them to LOW only and consider a second alternator as I have the room. The stick grip is going to be crowded already with trim hat, PTT, Flip/Flop, AP disconnect, so I'm not sure I want flap control there. Sometimes you feel like you're making decisions all alone, it's nice to have feedback! Markus J.
Compared to stock, did you shrink the panel, move it back or up or down? I’m wondering if modern avionics’ smaller size will allow me to shrink the space behind the panel, allow some extra knee room for my long legs and perhaps be a lower profile to allow better taxi visibility? You touched on this topic briefly at the end. Great video and AWESOME 3D print mock-up!!!!
Ryan, I didn't have the "Original" Lancair panel design drawn in, so I'm not sure exactly how the size compares. I can tell you that if you place a straight edge across both side rails, the bottom edge of my panel design is 1/8" below the straight edge. The top middle measures 11" up from the side rails. Markus J.
Excited to see this finished. Always loved your videos and pictures on IG.
