අතීතයේ විශාලා මහනුවර මහා දුර්භීක්ෂයක් ඇති විය. ආහාර දුර්ලභත්වයෙන් මිනිස්සු මැරෙන්නට වූහ. මළ සිරුරු නුවරින් බැහැර කළහ. මිනී කුණුගන්ඳින් අමනුෂ්‍යයෝ නුවරට ඇතුල් වූහ. ඒ නිසා තව තවත් මැරෙන්නට වූහ. ඒ හේතුකොට ගෙන ‘අහිවාතක’ නම් දරුණු රෝගයක් ඇති විය. මෙසේ දුර්භීක්ෂ, අමනුෂ්‍ය හා රෝග යන ත්‍රිවිධ භීතියෙන් උපද්‍රැත වූ විශාලා මහනුවර වැසියෝ මෙපවත් රජවරුනට දැන්වූහ. රජවරු ජනතාව සන්ථාගාර ශාලාවට රැස්කර වූහ. රජුන් අත වරදක් ඇත්දැයි විමසූහ. තමන් අත වරදක් නැතැයි වැසියෝ පිළිවදන් දුන්හ.
දීර්ඝ සාකච්ඡාවකින් පසුව තථාගතයන් වහන්සේ මේ නුවරට වැඩමවා ගත හොත් සියලු උවදුරු දුරුවේයයි තීරණයට බැස ගත්හ. බිම්බිසාර රජුගේ කැමැත්ත ඇතිව ලිච්ඡවී රජවරු දෙදෙනෙක් බුදුන් වහන්සේ කරා එළඹ, ස්වාමීනි භාග්‍යවතුන් වහන්ස, ත්‍රිවිධ භීතියකින් උපද්‍රැත වූ අපරට වැසියන් ගේ නිදුක් නීරෝගී බැව් උදෙසා භාග්‍යවතුන් වහන්සේ අප නුවරට වැඩමවන සේක් නම් අපට යහපතක් වේයැයි දන්වා සිටියහ.
තථාගතයන්වහන්සේ ආරාධනාව පිළිගෙන රුවන් සුතුරෙහි අණ තෙදින් කෙළ ලක්ෂයක් සක්වල ආරක්ෂාව සිදුවෙතියි ද එයින් මහත් පිරිසකට ධර්මාවබෝධය වෙතියි ද සලකා පන්සියයක් භික්ෂූන් වහන්සේ සමග විශාල මහා නුවරට වැඩමවා රුවන් පිරිත දෙසූහ. ඒ සමග ම සිවු දිගින් කළුකොට නැන්ගුණු මහා මේඝයෙන් (මහා වැසි වර්ෂා) මළ කඳන් ඉලපී ගංගානම් ගඟට පාවී ගියේ ය. නගරය පවිත්‍ර විය. පන්සියයක් පමණ බුදු පාමොක් මහ සඟන විසල් මහ නුවරට පිවිසෙත් ම සක් දෙවිඳු ඈ මහානුභාව සම්පන්න දෙවිවරු පැමිණියාහුය. ඔවුන් ගේ පැමිණීම සමගම අමනුෂ්‍යයෝ ක්‍රමයෙන් ඉවත් වී ගියාහුය.
තථාගතයන් වහන්සේ රතන සූත්‍රය වදාරා නුවර දොරටුව අබියස වැඩ සිට අනඳ හිමියන් අමතා ආනන්ද, මේ රතන සූත්‍රය ඉගෙන පූජා ද්‍රව්‍යද ගෙන්වා ගෙන ලිච්ඡවී කුමරුන් සමඟ විශාලා මහ නුවර තුන් පවුරු වටා හැසිරෙමින් පිරිත් දෙසවයි වදාළ සේක.
අනඳ හිමියෝ ද බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේ ගේ පාත්‍රයට පිරිත් පැන් ගෙන රතන සූත්‍රය දෙස්මින් මුළු නුවරට පිරිත් පැන් ඉස්සාහ. සියලු අමානුෂ්‍යයෝ පලා ගියහ. නගරය ආරාක්ෂා සහිත විය. උවදුරු දුරු විය. මනුෂ්‍යයෝ සුඛිත මුදිත වූහ. සුවාසු දහසක් (අසූ හාරදහසක්) ප්‍රාණීන්ට ධර්මාභිසමය (ධර්මය අවබෝධ) විය. බුදුන් වහන්සේ දෙවන දවස්හි ද රතන සූත්‍රය වදාළහ. ඒ සමගම තවත් සුවාසු දහසක් ප්‍රාණීහු ධර්මාවබෝධය ලදහ. මෙසේ පිළිවෙළින් සත් දිනක් රතන සූත්‍රය දෙසූහ.

In the past there was a great famine in Vishala Mahanuwara. People began to die from food shortages. The bodies were expelled from the city. Inhumans entered the city with the stench of corpses. So more and more people were dying. As a result, a severe disease called 'Ahivathaka' occurred. The people of Vishala Mahanuwara, who were thus plagued by the threefold fear of famine, inhumanity, and disease, still informed the kings. The kings gathered the people in the inn hall. The kings asked if there was anything wrong with the hand. The villagers replied that they were not at fault.
After a long discussion, the realists decided that all dangers would be averted if they came to this city. With the consent of King Bimbisara, two Lichchavi kings approached the Buddha, and the Blessed One informed him that it would be good for us if the Blessed One could come to our city for the good health of the people of the West, who were afflicted with three kinds of fear.
The Thagata accepted the invitation and went to the great city with five hundred monks and preached the Ruwan Pirith, considering that the protection of one hundred thousand spirits by the command of the Ruwan Sutra would take place and that a large number of people would understand the Dhamma. At the same time, the corpses floated in the river Ganganam due to the great black cloud that had risen in four directions. The city was cleansed. As soon as about five hundred Buddhas entered the great city of Pamok, the great gods of Zak came. With their arrival, the inhumans gradually left.
The Thagatas recited the Rathana Sutta, worked at the gates of the city, addressed the Ananda Thera, learned the Ratana Sutta, brought the offerings and walked around the three walls of the Great City with the Lichchavi princes and recited the Pirith.
The Ananda Thera also took Pirith to the bowl of the Supreme Buddha and recited the Rathana Sutta and poured Pirith on the whole city. All the inhumans fled. The city was safe. The danger was averted. The people were happy. One thousand Suvas (eighty-four thousand) were Dharmabhisamaya (understanding of the Dhamma) for the ancients. The Buddha also recited the Ratana Sutta on the second day. At the same time, a thousand other sages attained enlightenment. Thus the Rathana Sutta was preached for seven days in a row.
