Hey, I'm Noel from The Packable Life. Join me as I nerd out over minimalist travel, ultralight backpacking, and all the gear it takes to make it happen.
My Minimalist Travel Packing List for 2024 (Ultralight One-Bag Travel)
Blog post with my current gear: www.thepackablelife.com/travel/gear/minimalist-travel
Full Disclosure: I filmed this several months ago, got cold feet about publishing it (introverted blogger problems), and didn't push it live until now. My packing list has changed a bit since filming, so check out the blog post above for my current setup. Also, the links below are affiliate links. Click them to help the channel (at no extra cost to you).
Join me as I dive inside my do-it-all minimalist travel packing list, which I use for my ultralight one-bag trips around the world. Everything in this video fits inside a 25-liter personal item backpack, which slides under the plane seat in front of me.

This was a great video and I’m looking forward to what you’ll share next!
Thanks! More to come (eventually).
Really nice packing! Great video. Easy to watch & very clear. I am the packer of the pair of us, and got some great ideas for my husband. Very nice underseat packing. I liked the video/camera set up too. Thank you for sharing.... off to read the blog post now. Have a good one, Lynne
Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad the list was useful! Happy packing.
Ur wallets falling apart because you didn’t buy a Ridge lol.
Fair enough, haha. I've since moved on from that terrible wallet to the Slimfold Soft Shell Micro.
Great job! Keep the videos going! I got at least one idea from here.
Thanks, will do! Glad I could help.
Almost every item listed here is very high end. It would cost you a few grand to follow all these suggestions. Guy must be dong all right financially. Pretty much out of my league.
You're right, my setup is definitely on the higher end and many of the items might break the bank for budget travelers. I've been pondering making a "Budget Travel Gear" video for my readers/viewers who can't afford my setup.
@@thepackablelife Well, let me qualify my observation. It looks like you do a lot of traveling professionally, so I get it; if you're a "professional traveler" you need professional everything: gear, clothing, etc. As a working musician, I play a high end, top of the line brass instrument. If I were just a beginner or "intermediate" player spending money on a high end instrument wouldn't be worth it. But, my guess is that most of the people watching this vid or not going to be "professional travelers". So yes, a budget gear vid would be helpful; thanks for considering it. That said, I'm impressed with the gear you describe in this video.
@@MrRezillo Thanks for the great feedback, I really appreciate it. Recommending high end gear that isn't super approachable to much of my audience has always been a concern of mine, but I also don't want to be disingenuous and recommend products that I have little to no experience with just because they're more affordable. I've been brainstorming ways to approach my next video, so I appreciate your feedback; it'll help guide the process. Cheers!
@@thepackablelife Part of my post got deleted some how. I just wanted to mention: I'm a semi-professional musician. I play a professional level instrument (trumpet) that costs a lot more than a beginner or intermediate model, because I "outgrew" those models. So, I understand that if you're a professional who travels a lot, you need to have the best gear, not just your equipment but everything you pack. People who don't travel much won't need that level of gear. And yes, I appreciate your integrity in not recommending cheaper items you haven't used personally. Okay, I've belabored the point enough! Looking forward to watching your other videos.
Solid travel setup, like the other commenters I couldn’t even tell it was your first video on the channel great stuff. I would’ve enjoyed seeing you actually pack up the bag, but understand the difficulties in recording that well, keep it coming!
Thanks so much! I'll keep this in mind when I make my packing list for 2025.
Cool stuff. But minimalist? Nope.
For what I do (full-time blogger with a professional camera setup), I'd say this packing list is fairly minimalist. If I weren't a blogger/UA-camr, I'd probably leave the camera gear at home and would consider taking an iPad instead of a laptop. I've also gone back and forth between only wearing one pair of shoes instead of the boots/shoes combo, so if I can ever find a pair of do-it-all shoes that I love, I could significantly lighten up my back by wearing the shoes and leaving the boots behind.
@@thepackablelife Thanks for responding. I'm sure you have better to do, I appreciate. Now, why did I say it's not minimalist? You carry things that you don't need if you are to go minimalist. For example, you don't need a laptop case, especially when you have a proper travel bag. With a laptop like a Macbook, you don't need a stand, nor a separate keyboard, let alone a mouse in addition to the built-in trackback (even for work. I'm on my computer 12 hour a day, and can't travel without it, I write papers, prepare lectures and conferences, and I've never need a separate keyboard and mouse. At the office or home, I like using those stuff for comfort, but not on the road, especially for a minimalist experience). You don't need a razor+clippers (a more minimalist option is to bring a device like Philipps' One Blade to shave and groom your hair and hairs). Also too many pouches/bags in your toiletries bag .. it seems you really like Zpack's little stuff ;) Why a JBL speaker? Why a leather case for your passport that is heavy (heavier than other options) and really carries nothing but your passport. Once again, some cool stuff in your video, but it's not a minimalist packing list. Now I'm looking forward to your next minimalist list ;)
Very nice list :) thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked it!
Respect, great upload. Thank you 👍
I appreciate it!
Great job bro.. keep it up..
Thank you! More to come...
Looks heavy to be carried in cabin luggage, has laptop so cannot put in check in luggage
My setup is definitely not too heavy to carry onto an airplane. I've done so dozens of times.
Love all the details.
Thank you!
You're a great speaker. Professional video and good info. Not sure about the socks though, the price put me right off 🙂
Thanks! And, yes, I understand that paying $20 for socks is a bit steep, but Darn Tough will send you a new pair of socks for free if yours wear out.
A packing video that actually makes sense.
Thank you. I tried to make it as straightforward as possible.
Love the ultralight sacks. I use the large size for cords/electronics and medium for toiletries
Yes, great company with great products.
how much the total?
Weight or cost?
If you love the adventure, the cost is just a number
Great video! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I agree with the others in that you did a great job! Maybe you could do a follow up, how on earth you packed all of that into the backpack. We have to believe you, that it all fit, but as they say,- seeing is believing :-) BTW, there is another fabric that is "antistink" and that is wood. Check out the brand called Wijld. Cheers, Frank
I'm definitely considering a "How I pack my gear" video. (You can see me unpacking my backpack early on in the video to get a vague idea of how everything fits, btw.)
Nice video. Would love to know how much that bag weighs with everything in it. Thanks.
Fully packed with winter gear is 19.0 pounds
As a minimalist one bager you bring 3 pairs of shoes? Unheard of lol I go with boots on feet and white shoes inside. I will buy cheap sandals then donate them at the end if I feel the showers I’m at warrant them.
I don't bring three pairs of shoes... I wear boots and pack minimalist shoes like you do. And I don't bring my minimalist sandals on every trip, though they'll always come along if I'm staying in a hostel, going to the beach, or plan on frequenting gyms/pools/saunas/etc.
I enjoyed your video, make more. I would have loved to see how you got all your gear into your pack. I'm working on one bag travel, not quite there yet, but working on it. Keep sharing!
I will definitely make more! I'm trying to find time to film with a newborn baby at home, but will make it happen once things calm down a bit.
You could put your keys in an organizer (I use one from eBay - identical to Ridge /Shield).
You're the second person that has told me this, so I should probably look into it! Thanks for the suggestion.
Incredible tog et 25K views in your first video is just so good and simply structured
Yeah, I was not expecting to get all of the exposure on my first video, but I"ll take it! Thanks for the kind words.
Noel, I’ve been following you website on and off for years and just did a random search on UA-cam after reading an article on your site. Nice to see you’re here and hope you make more vids. You have given me great ideas I’ve actually used. Much appreciated.
Thanks for following along all of these years! I'm excited to turn over a new leaf and get into UA-cam (finally). I definitely plan on making more videos; any specific videos/topics you'd like to see?
@@thepackablelife Yes, please, if it is possible to touch on the topic: "How to get along with women." Thank you.
I love Tom bihn ❤
Me too. Best in the business. I have since replaced my Bagger ULTRA 25 with the TOM BIHN Techonaut 30... best one-bag travel backpack ever.
Great video. As a minimalist traveler and ultralight hiker I am amazed at how little the philosophies and products are blended. You are one of the first I’ve seen on UA-cam that has a similar travel kit to myself. Liked and subscribed.
Thank you! Yes, I've been really fascinated by imparting the ultralight tactics I've learned from backpacking into the travel realm. Sure, it's a bit tough to be "ultralight" when you're carrying laptops and camera gear around, but I think I've done a decent job. Would love to check out your setup. Is it published anywhere online?
@@thepackablelife yes, hard to be ultralight when carrying a laptop indeed, but the principles still remain. I don't have anything online anywhere. As of right now I just consume the content. Pretty similar to yours though. Just a lot of GarageGrownGear stuff & I lean more towards Hyperlite over Zpacks.
I'm so glad you decided to push past the shyness and post this! I have a quick question - what do you prefer to use as a plug adapter when you travel internationally?
Thanks so much, and great question. I use this adapter for international travel: www.aukey.com/products/aukey-universal-qc-pd3-0-travel-plug-adapter-power-converter-with-4-ports
Hey, great job on your first every UA-cam Video, great topic, well presented, and well organized.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. More content coming eventually.
great sharing. your suggestion is really base on your experience! not typical edc suggesttion others youtubers always suggest. hell expensive. i love that. u got a new subcribers. looking foward to watch your new videos.
Thanks! I only recommend products that work for me. Nobody sponsors my videos or pays me for brand exposure.
Bravo! Solid content, no fluff, mellow delivery. I learned so much. 😊
Thanks so much! I'm excited to make more content with the same style/delivery. I'll be busy in the coming weeks, but I'll get some more videos out soon enough.
Good evening ! new subsriber (70 yr old lady) from Los Angeles, California . It’s a great video. I’m traveling to Asia carrying a personal bag (backpack) only. I will be mailing most of my stuff 3 months in advance. What is the best backpack (size) I will use as a personal bag ? 20 liters? I’m minimalist too. Thank you .
I think you can go up to a 25-liter bag without any issues! The Zpacks bag I recommend in this video is 25 liters and fits perfectly in the personal item bins at the airport.
@@thepackablelife Thank you for your advice. Where can I order the Zpacks bag? Does Zpacks bag has 20 L in case I will be carrying small gadgets including phone, medicine, id, credit card, cash, a pair of pants , 2 blouses and incontinence essentials only? I have several backpacks with different sizes but I like what you recommended. Thank you again. By the way, I have severe back problem too!
You did great….looking forward to other videos
Thanks!
For your first video, this was so good, I was sad when I checked on your channel for this to be your only upload, hope to see you post more!
I will post more, I promise! I've got a big life event coming up within the next week 👶, but I'm going to try my best to film a video beforehand. Wish me luck!
Just wow! I’m a female and so happy for this video, I just need to add a makeup bag to your method and done. Hey from Doha!
Great to hear that my advice works well for the ladies, as well! Happy travels to you.
Good video. I watched to the very end and I never do that. keep making more. rod
Thanks, Rod! Got another one in the works.
I’m personally nervous about using third-party batteries for a camera.
I actually had a third-party battery expand and get stuck in an old Olympus camera. You think I'd learn! I've recently upgraded to the X-T4, and will buy a couple of Fuji batteries as backups. No more cheap Amazon knockoffs. I'll be sure to mention this in my next video where I mention the camera/batteries.
Nice video! Really appreciate the tips. Very helpful!
Glad you found the video helpful! Another one in the works.
Great job!
Thank you!
Excellent video. Appreciate the detail and straight to the point-ness. And that you literally went through every single item, where they go, how they’re packed, and the links to them! Awesome @thepackablelife
Thanks! I have another video in the works that will dive into some of my all-time favorite travel items... I tried to film another video yesterday, but it was a disaster on multiple levels. Definite learning experience haha.
Great video, keep posting!
Thank you! Will do.
Amazing load out...one of the best I've ever seen on YT. Good job
Thanks! Really appreciate it. Already working on refining it for the next video haha.
look into mulberry silk boxer briefs, they don't smell at all
I'll definitely check them out. How durable are they?
@@thepackablelife not too durable sadly
How do you deal with airlines that only allow 15lbs (7kg) of carry-on luggage?
Good question! I've only ever had my personal item bag weighed once, and it was in Europe. Can't remember the airline. All I needed to do was take my laptop and water bottle out beforehand, hand them to my travel buddy, weigh my bag, and get approval. To this date, I've never had any issues with my personal item bag being too big or too heavy.
If you take BodyMint, you can go a long time without showering and not smell.
Hey Noel, congratulations for your first video, I've really enjoyed it ! Thanks for your sharing 🌿🌸
Thank you!
Great video! Always trying to adapt minimalist packing for women! Your tips are great for women, believe it or not! 😊 All the best!
Great to hear my tips translate well for the ladies! Happy (minimalist) traveling.
Great job. Really enjoyed the content. Looking forward to your next one.
Thank you! More in the works.
Why is this your first UA-cam video? You have done an excellent job… I stayed through the end because you are “matter of fact” and made it clear , it’s your opinion. I’m preparing to walk a Camino and your video popped in the middle of 100’s… I love this pack- waterproof and light weight… yay to Camino Frances… excellent job. I will purchase a few items starting with the pack… returning what I’ve gotten so far. Thank you!
Thank you! Happy to hear that you like my style and found some gear for your upcoming trip on my list. (And, yes, the pack is incredible.) Have a great time on the Camino!
Awesome video! I’m a big fan of traveling with one bag (personal item)
It's the best way to travel! What bag do you use?
@@thepackablelife it’s a 25L packable backpack from "Nanwei". A $15-$20 usd backpack but I love it, I have used it for 3 weeks trips to Brazil and Peru, Planning to update it to the 30L travel backpack from Peak Design, also fits under the seat
@@Leonel_Ruiz Hell yeah! Those cheap Chinese brands can work out sometimes. Great call on the Peak Design; it seems like a very well-made pack.
Great video
Thank you 🙏
