Al Bowlly on guitar, can't confirm if though. I'm currently looking for the rejected Parlophone test with a different band. Written by Hoagy Carmichael & Mitchell Parish 1927. Star Dust by Don Barrigo & his Hawaiian Swing was recorded August 22, 1938 London, England. Matrix are CE-2978-1 with the Parlophone label. The audio file was kindly given to me by Chas Cox from the Heritage Quay archive.

    Could well be him, has the typical very measured style, never goes off tempo, though if it is, it sounds like a different maker of guitar than I'm used to hearing from this period, maybe it was a studio loaner?

      It still sounds horrible. I have asked an expert about these vinyl tests, they said it must be done manually and would take ages to remaster.

      Audio Technica ATVM-95 SP 3.0 mil styli, and the built in pre amp from the Audio Technica LP120x. I can't afford specialized 78rpm pre amp machines.

    I really find it interesting that we both do something different on our channel but at the same time the same, you find all versions of a song and I make lyrics, but I still love finding other people who likes that type of music too

      @alternateunreleasedshellac505 no it was a separate recording, with only Al and Ivy. It's the only version that includes the verse and it is sung at a more slow ballad pace

    Most interesting side, albeit still in the old-fashoined medium tempo; it wasn't until the early 40's that bandleaders (and indeed composer Hoagy Carmichael himself) discovered that this tune actually works much better when played as a slow ballad.

      @@Wolfganger That is not a band recording, but yes, it's very nice (although it's only part of a record; combined with "Sophisticated Lady") although Layton, again, doesn't play it as a ballad.

    Still crazy how this song was supposed to be lost to time considering this record with the same label was produced less than the other records by Al Bowlly, and is now remembered with UA-cams archives with videos, and due to the Caretakers EATEOT. I find it ironic how a project about forgetting things makes you find once forgotten songs remembered by the people of the past.

    It can and should be cleaned up - I may have heard (in part) this recording on LP -but far from the whole broadcast - it is worth releasing on CD - surviving broadcasts are rare - more so when it is the likes of Lew Stone and Al Bowlly
