Always my favourite track (other than Idol on Blue Moves!); a friend met Elton at a corporate meet and greet and asked if he could do Ticking that evening; Elton said, "No, it would be too long to suddenly pop it in to the set and not well known enough to hold the audience; but I appreciate your appreciation of it".

One of my favorite Elton songs, tremendously underrated, not sure how many even know it, from the Caribou album. Just great

♫ Oh you danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law ♫ Absolute genius from Bernie Taupin, without whom there would be no Elton John, as mentioned by EJ himself in many interviews.

"An extremely quiet child" they called you in your school report "He's always taken interest in the subjects that he's taught" So what was it that brought the squad car screaming up your drive To notify your parents of the manner in which you died At St. Patrick's every Sunday, Father Fletcher heard your sins "Oh, he's unconcerned with competition he never cares to win" But blood stained a young hand that never held a gun And his parents never thought of him as their troubled son "Now you'll never get to Heaven" Mama said Remember Mama said Ticking, ticking "Grow up straight and true blue Run along to bed" Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking They had you holed up in a downtown bar screaming for a priest Some gook said "His brain's just snapped" then someone called the police You'd knifed a Negro waiter who had tried to calm you down Oh you'd pulled a gun and told them all to lay still on the ground Promising to hurt no one, providing they were still A young man tried to make a break, with tear-filled eyes you killed That gun butt felt so smooth and warm cradled in your palm Oh your childhood cried out in your head "they mean to do you harm" "Don't ever ride on the devil's knee" Mama said Remember mama said Ticking, ticking "Pay your penance well, my child Fear where angels tread" Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking Within an hour the news had reached the media machine A male Caucasian with a gun had gone berserk in Queens The area had been sealed off, the kids sent home from school Fourteen people lying dead in a bar they called the Kicking Mule Oh they pleaded to your sanity for the sake of those inside "Throw out your gun, walk out slow just keep your hands held high" But they pumped you full of rifle shells as you stepped out the door Oh you danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law "You've slept too long in silence" Mama said Remember Mama said Ticking, ticking "Crazy boy, you'll only wind up with strange notions in your head" Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

And he danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law. Bernie's lyrics are the best. One of their greatest songs and sadly the gun deaths continue in countries where Millions are paid to politicians / lobbyists to brain wash the masses that they need guns. Bernie knew how tragic it was back in the 1970s. Sadly, his words still fall on deaf ears.

Taupin and John's view of crime and guns in the United States. A masterpiece of Caribou, that many people aren't aware of. They play the chart-topper they like,, and don't hear the jewels in the rest of the album, this is so visual and moving. And so sad so sad so sadly true

Every bit as relevant today as it was when Caribou was released, this song demonstrates the passion of Taupin's lyrics and how, with the extraordinary music that only Sir Elton John turns out is sheer poetry; a tragedy put into song. "And you danced to your death like a marionette....." I see it. Every single time, I see it happening.

This is such a work of art that always leaves me with the chills and it makes me think about the situation in a second light and the calm that washes over me is amazing. Elton said that he was not a fan of this song when Bernie wrote it because of the social tragedy and he didn't want to capitalize on it. Then he said that he was so blown away by the song and it took a toll on him that he would not be able to play it. Then he said he had an epiphany and he simply had to do it for the people who are still healing and the few that couldn't. It's the best thing on Caribou and dare I say that it was really the only thing on Caribou. Sir Elton is a fixture in my house and we listen to him daily.Billy Joel is not the piano man. His name is Elton John and he hangs out with the Queen and I have a feeling that they are probably best of friends.

What a true wonderful song even by Elton standards. Elton invests a Wagnerian grandure in Bernies lyrics which are characterised by sympathy for the underdog. This song is actually an album track but this is typical of these two great songwriters. Their albums are liberally laced with songs of this quality and this is why for me they are two of the greatest composers of the twentieth century.

    • @jtsnowman66

their best works never saw a single spin on the radio. You have to have bought the albums to hear what Elton and Bernie were really made of. The way he is able to sing Bernie's lyrics so passionately and write such beautiful piano parts is without comparison
