The Structured Writing Teacher
United States
Приєднався 30 тра 2022
I'm a children’s book author with HarperCollins & Disney-Hyperion and a middle school ELA teacher. I help teachers engage their students to become active leaders in their own writing process.
My structured, student-led workshop will get your students WILDLY engaged in their writing... techniques I learned when I left teaching to write and publish children's books. That experience blew my mind. There were so many things about how writers create that I did not teach my own students! So now I'm sharing everything I learned from my editors with YOU.

I'm Robin, a middle school teacher and the author of ten children's novels with Disney Hyperion and HarperCollins. Our workshop reflects the same process I use when working with my editors. I say "our workshop" because that's the point of the workshop... it isn't just a time for me to give lessons and assign a writing assignment. It's THEIR time to tinker and be fearless and try out new things. They love practicing writing skills with topics that interest them. I use the number 3 and 7 a lot in my workshop... from the writing trios to the lesson minutes... it's all based on brain research.
Do we have time to get in all the standards-based lessons and essays? YES. My essays are taught in a "block" and skills are taught in the workshop. This way, the skills transfer to ALL types of writing, not just product-driven essays.
So this is a STRUCTURED & STUDENT-LED workshop.
Here are the 5 steps:
1. Set the mood for writing
2. Issue the writing challenge
3. Student leaders
4. The Six Skills Power lessons (the teacher's mini-lessons, but timed by the leaders!)
5. Diamond mining (the secret sauce!)

What is an example of the warm up using complex sentences (that, for them to continue, needs to be perfect)? Thanks
I give them the starting word and a topic. They write the dependent clause and independent clause using a capital letter, comma, and period at the end. Here is a link to a set for those: www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/7th-Grade-ELA-Daily-Warm-ups-Set-6-BUNDLE-Bell-ringers-for-One-Month-10677703
You seem to have missed SRSD. It has literally decades of research and a robust evidence base in terms of how to approach the writing process, which includes the elements you bring up here and then some. No need to make a new program really. I was actually talking to one of the researchers involved with this and they pointed out that sentence combining actually has pretty limited research support, which was surprising to me - but something to look deeper into.
Oh my gosh! I would love access to your spinner. I have so many reluctant writers and would love to try this out!

May I have access to your six grade website? I’m currently homeschooling my 7th grader and your videos are extremely helpful. Thanks for all your hard work.
Hi! I closed it down unfortunately. It was on a drive with my old school. But I have lots of freebies in my TPT store!
@@thestructuredwritingteacher Thank you for replying
Very interesting. I’m a homeschool parent and am trying to learn as much information as I can on how to teach writing. I have quickly realized that there is little research to back up the information I find, as you have mentioned. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and understanding on the topic.
Thank you! I’ll keep sharing as I find more information.
I had the same thought! Also a homeschooler and had the same difficulty finding anything reasonable. My son has dysgraphia and really struggles with writing, and there does seem to be a parallel between just throwing writing at them and hoping they'll get it in some curriculums....
Your videos are so helpful! I teach 4th grade and have learned so much from you. Keep making amazing content 🫶🏼
Thank you!! I love talking about writing. More to come!!
As a special ed teacher, the x factor in any sort of research is how the learning style interacts with different groups of students. Some truly enjoy and take to a more intuitive approach to learning writing and others don't. I agree though, a mix of both is best.
How do you feel about Dr. Montessori theory about writing before reading?
This is really helpful.. thank you!
Sure you’re welcome!
The Writing Revolution
All research has shown we need direct and explicit instruction in Literacy.
Good! I hated the fact that most of my teachers didn't put in the effort to make things a bit different, so every year we would have to answer the same questions ("What did I do this summer?" is the most common)
Do you have any resources on teaching students how to write a Research Paper?
Hi! I use this deconstruct activity for an informative essay here: www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Informative-Essay-Graphic-Organizer-Research-Based-Informational-Essay-8731406
I am so glad you mentioned sentence combining. I found this research when I was working on my dissertation and now teach teachers to it.
Fantastic! I've seen a huge improvement in my 6th graders this year since they have to write PERFECT compound/complex sentences every day. When I combine it with a fun quick-write, they don't really complain. :)
Hi Robin, I'm enjoying your videos! You mention in this video that you do Writer's Workshop twice a week. What do you do on the other days of the week? Also, most ELA teachers teach reading in addition to writing. How do you suggest layering reading instruction with writing instruction?
Hi! I'm so glad to hear the videos are helpful! My school has a curriculum we use for reading and I like to focus on a short story each week and we read a whole novel later in the year. I'm not completely satisfied with the curriculum and my team is looking in the units on Commonlit. Those look very promising! I do the writing workshop twice a week at the beginning of the year to get them trained, and then we move to once a week (every Wednesday). They get so upset if I change it from a Wednesday! haha
I’m already thinking about Aug 2023! Do you do this lesson and others like it the first few weeks of school? I have 80 minutes. Think 1-2 full classes per week for writing or divide each day into 40 minutes and devote 40 to writing each day?
Yes! I do this the first week of school after I give them an initial "baseline" assignment where they must write a couple of paragraphs about a time they were SURPRISED. (I then repeat that same exact prompt at the end of the year so they can see their own growth!) Having 80 minutes a day sounds fantastic! If it were me, I'd run a student-led workshop a couple of times per week and "borrow" some time from the other days to get in deeper lessons on the 6 priority writing skill so they're ready for workshop.
Well, they better never take an AP test. 🙄😂 This is NOT a good reason not to do what most students enjoy.
I would love access to your spinner. Thank you for the great video lessons as well.
Sure! Here's the latest spinner: wheelofnames.com/p5x-pz5
