    I picked up the P4 in this series (I still wanna get the stretch and the endura). PD#1 sharpens precisely like cruwear. Why wouldn’t it, I guess…that’s what it is. 10 minutes on the stones and strops and the P4 was well beyond hair whittling, which is exactly where I try to keep all of my cruwear.

    Any thoughts on this one vs the Cub, if you've had a chance to compare them? Cheers.

    • @timbo4374
      @timbo4374 День тому

      I've not yet handled a Cub, but it would be a great edc imho, yet still be able to handle most camp chores. The shorter blade would put some limits on the camp chores though, but it could certainly handle camp kitchen stuff and carving notches, making feather sticks, etc.

    Biggest comparison, the RD6 and RD9 are 1/4" 5160 mid-carbon spring steel and the BK9 is 3/16" 1095 CroVan. But the biggest complaint from me is that the RD6, RD7, RD9 and RD Tanto are all non-skeletonized handle tang. The BK7 and BK9 have stupid skeletonized handles. I say stupid because I have seen the BK9 break at that weak point. For the life of me I don't understand why they think removing material from the handle of a hard use tool was a good idea. And I don't want to hear the b.s. response that it saves weight. I mean, go to the gym and lift heavy weights like I do if it's "too heavy" for you. The weight "saved" by removing material is so negligible anyway. I actually contacted Kabar to see if they would please offer a non-skeletonized BK9 version and they said no. So the RD9 it is for me all the way. Besides, I did a chopping comparison and the RD9 was way more comfortable than the BK9 which kept slipping out of my hands even with tacky leather gloves. But I also put TKC G10 orange scales on my RD6, RD7, RD9 and RD Tanto.

  • @Ruger44Redhawk
    @Ruger44Redhawk 8 днів тому

    The RD9 is on my pack as a chopper. will take a small light slicer for food prep like the Kabar Snody Big Boss. Sometimes I'll also pack a stabber like the Buck 650 Nighthawk or Ontario SP6. Anyway, I did a little chopping comparison between the RD9 and BK9 and honestly, I don't like the BK9. It kept slipping as everyone criticizes. I did put orange TKC G10 scales on my RD9 so that might be the big difference. The RD9 is also 1/4" thick of 5160 mid-carbon spring steel and the BK9 is 3/16" thick of 1095 CroVan. But the biggest complaint from me about the BK9 is those stupid skeletonized handles! The RD9 is full non-skeletonized tang. I have seen the BK9 break at those weak points on the skeletonized part. Why would they do that. You would think they would save money by skipping that step in the manufacturing process of removing material. I actually e-mailed Kabar and asked them if they would please consider a non-skeletonized BK9 version. They said no. So the tough RD9 all the way for me.

    • @timbo4374
      @timbo4374 17 днів тому

      I can, but I use many different stones and methods. Most of the time I freehand any more, but I do have a couple fixed angle systems I used while just learning. I'll do a video soon on this topic. Thank you fpr diving me the idea for a topic. I've been in a rut lately and can use the incentive for making new videos! In the meantime, my recommendation if you want a 1 and done stone that won't break the bank, I highly recommend Sharpal stone. They are dual sided, coarse and fine, in either 6x3 or 8x3. I like the 8x3 and it goes for about 70 bucks. The 6x3 goes for around 20 bucks less. Outdoor55 turned me onto it, and I'm pleased with it.

    Hey Timbo! The blade coating is Spyderco's new Titanium Carbon Nitride (TiCN). ... I ordered a Police 4 LIghtweight, PD#1, plain edge today. ... I have a soft spot for the Police models, as my first Spyderco was a Police with SS handle and no bevels on the perimeter. The fully serrated blade was G-2 (Gingami-1) steel purchased in the winter of 1987. I still have that 37 year old Spyderco and it has never cut anything. The serrations are ground more deeply than today's productions. It's a wicked self defense knife to me still. ... Always nice to see new Timbo videos. Keep up the good work, my friend. MM
