Blue Streak | The History of Britain in Space, Ep 1
With nearly 100 years of involvement in spaceflight, Britain has a rich history that is often overlooked in favour of space programs from around the world. In this series, I delve deep into this fascinating saga, replete with triumph and tragedy, to tell the full story. This is the history of Britain in space, told like never before.
Welcome to The History of Britain in Space, episode 1. Chronicling the rise, fall and legacy of perhaps the most understated, yet influential of all of Britain's rockets from yesteryear. Hear the full story of how it came to life and how it shaped present-day spaceflight in Europe. From it's beginnings as a nuclear deterrent to the backbone of Europa, ESA and Ariane rockets, this is the story of the Blue Streak.

    I am old enough to remember seeing cancellation of BlueStreak on BBC news. Also the columns in the newspapers about Bluestreak failures at Woomera. Good to see the record being put straight that the failures weren't often down to Bluestreak, but the other components. All space mad kids were gutted when it was cancelled. Excellent doc showing the background and all the stuff we weren't aware of when at the time.

    I have to disagree with your claim that Ariane was derived from Blue Streak. Yes, the Ariane 1 first stage is a cylinder with a cone on top. That configuration is very common for rocket stages, and so general that you can't claim inheritance. The RZ-2 engine has no lineage to the Vikings used on Ariane 1. They use different fuels. Viking development started in 1965 at SEP in France, when the Europa 1 project was just getting started. The only commonality between Ariane 1 and Blue Streak I can find is the use of stainless steel for the construction of the first stage.

      @tomduneofficial 25 днів тому

      Indeed. By the time it was developed it was already obsolete as a weapon. It's funny because the Gov (commons) weren't interested by the Lords were the ones to push for it in the case of Blue Streak. Having read through reams of HoL minutes on blue streak debates, I was astonished by the Lords position and criticism of the commons for cancelling the program but still pushing for it to get used. Gov wanted to make money from satellites but were too short sighted in how they could both save money and make it by developing domestic systems. Typical really.

      I know the feeling! Researching it was both amazing and depressing at the same time 😂. Comments very much appreciated! I guess UK space news is a niche that doesn't get a huge following, but it's always about quality for viewers over anything else. The lunar projects were more a 'what if' than anything due to the government at the time not being willing to fund it. Silly move really... as with most of their decisions about our space program over the decades

    The Ariane 1 has nothing to do with the Blue Streak

    • @tomduneofficial
      @tomduneofficial 26 днів тому

      They used the Blue Streak as the design for it's first stage but upgraded it, added more engines, etc. Ariane 1 was based on the Europa which Blue Streak had quite literally been part of. France wanted it's own rocket system so took the best bits from what worked before. The Europa 3 upgrade design (still using Blue Streak) became L3S which was renamed Ariane to sound more appealing. Even British Aerospace, which had been formed from Hawker Siddley Dynamics who built Blue Streak, and later became BAE Systems, worked on Ariane 1. So no, I'm afraid you're quite wrong. maxpolyakov.com/history-of-esa-rockets-ariane/

    • @MimeHTF5
      @MimeHTF5 26 днів тому

      @@tomduneofficial The first stage of the first Ariane generation used different engines that ran on a different fuel and was built in a different country by a different manufacturer. By the way, the article says Europa 3b, Europa 3 was a collective term for various projects that didn't have much to do with Europa 1 and 2

    • @tomduneofficial
      @tomduneofficial 26 днів тому

      @MimeHTF5 The 3b was Europa 3, and yes there were various iterations of it for various applications. I alluded in the video to the fact France wanted to use different fuels and yes, whilst Ariane was mostly built in mainland Europe, some parts were built in the UK by British Aerospace. Again, they took the design of Blue Streak and modified it to upgrade it to fit their own requirements. Even ESA cite Blue Streak as an inspiration behind Ariane 1, so are you saying THEY are wrong too??

    Great documentary; insightful and educational. This should be of value to any young British Spaceflight enthusiasts interested in the UKs Historical contribution; particular post-2018 newcomers to this new "Second Space Race" to the Moon. I have a "Space Technology" book (Salamander, 1989), co-authored by Kenneth Gatland, past President of the British Interplanetary Society (11:15); member of the BIS Council 1945-81; and designer for Hawker Aircraft (Hurricane, Typhoon and Tempest). Mr Gatlands book, of course, references UK "Black Arrow (Prospero)", 1971 and ELDO "Europa II", 1971; but NOT "Blue Streak". Now, having watch your documentary, this does seem surprising. A quality production of value to Spaceflight Observers; AND terminal Polymaths that somehow enjoy "brushing the cobwebs off History" (Dust Never Sleeps), particularly British History; both of which this Kiwi subscribes.

    There're simply not enough videos about British rocketry and even less about British spacecraft. I will WELCOME your video! 'Til then, Tom, aloha! It's great to see you back!

      You're jolly well right, Jim Lad, simply NOT enough... and that's coming from a New Zealander, here in the Antipodes. That's why I subscribe to this channel (even though our Host is Scottish; because the British History I've read frequently warns of the "danger of the Scottish Host", or something like that...) We have rockets down here in New Zealand too, by the way, just in case you didn't know. 🚀🇬🇧🕷🕸🌏🇳🇿🚀👋👤🦎🌴🌊

      Aloha Jim! It's great to be back! I wholeheartedly agree and that's one of the reasons for wanting to do a whole series on it. At times I wondered if I'd bitten off more than I could chew, but glad to have pushed on and really hope that it looks as good as I think it does for you guys!

      @jimcabezola3051 I was thinking about hosting a live q&a type thing later in the evening if there's enough interest in that sort of thing, would be great to have you there

      @@tomduneofficial It's 23:11 here in Hawai'i and my dentures are screaming to be let out and tossed into their cleaning jar. However, you can be certain I'll be watching it a bit delayed in MY morning. Your Q&As are fun! Aloha po, Tom!
