Poundcake on the Pacific Crest Trail 2014
I put this together for my grandmother's retirement community, so I could show them a story of my through hike along the whole PCT in 2014. It's also my 10 year anniversary of hiking the PCT, and I like how this turned out, even if I would like to give it some significant polish at some point. I didn't have time to score it myself but I won't have much time for video editing the rest of the year, so I figured I might as well upload it as is!
All the music is Buckethead and Explosions in the Sky, two artists I love and listened to a lot both on the PCT and otherwise.
Be sure to check out Buckethead's work at bucketheadpikes.com/
and Explosions in the Sky at explosionsinthesky.bandcamp.com/

This is a test video to quickly go through process of recording, editing and grading in DaVinci Resolve, and quickly making some music in Ableton (I did all this in one day, the day we visited the gardens). My friend, Congratulations on completing your long walk. So many miles and personal milestones.Thank you for going to all the effort to record what you saw. The way you of frame landscape scenes in your viewfinder is clear and beautiful and reverent and respectful. I hope you have good health your whole life so you can continue walking and looking. Thank you for reminding those of us who have done similar solitary walks, of the kinship we have with clouds and wate, wind and rock and trees . All the best where ever you may go, Chris
I love the flora and fauna shots and history of the trail and natives. SO much better than just a vlog of what your personal experience is, more of a documentary. Awesome dude for real.
I'm glad, and thanks!
Two questions, why did you add background music and why is it louder than the dialogue?
Interesting that you don't mention the blackfeet waged a war of genocide on the kootenai people and forced them west of the rockies
Some of my favorite camera-work from you in this series yet! Wonderful stuff. "Cathedral of Bodies" Gotta be the title to some project of yours in the future. Also, thank you for your thoughts on indigenous history, and how that impacts (or should) the way we understand our own place here.
Cheers, thanks! And indeed to the Cathedral of Bodies ;)
Such a good vid, thanks pal. I have some unfinished business on the PCT this year and might hike out West on the PNT 🤔
Thanks for the comment! And enjoyyyyyyyyy 🙌
I might have missed this in the video, apologies if so. What was your start date?
I headed out from the terminus on June 30th, 2022! It was a later snow year than usual, so usually by then it would be less snowy.
@keegan.o I will just have to pay attention to the snow pack this year. Not headed out till 25'. I prefer starting early but this isn't the PCT where I get 700 miles of desert, as you know. Haha straight up to those passes! Gorgeous videos. Can't wait to watch them all. Thank you for what you made 😀
@@miyahosaka8361 Cheers! I recommend joining the PNT Hikers facebook group if you have facebook, some official PNTA people there give good advice and people share what they know about the snow each season.
man i live near here and would never hike this, the amount of grizzly bears is crazy
great videos btw
I will be hitting this trail solo starting at Polebridge on June 15th. Your film making is top-shelf and also enormously helpful.
That's awesome, have a blast out there! And thanks, glad to hear it!
I worked last summer on the Okanogan National Forest in the Pasayten Wilderness as a Ranger. Can't wait to see you slogging through the miles and miles of deadfall on the boundary trail! Great video can't wait for the next installment
Hahahahaha, as you know it is a truly special and unique experience! It'll be a while as my other work is in full swing... but it should be a fun episode for sure 😂
Love watching the journey! I was so excited to see this newest video pop up!
Glad to hear it, thanks! 🙌
Loving following your journey- can't wait for the next video!
Thanks kumber!
Always excited and grateful to see the next installment of this series. Thank you.
Thanks @willedwards!
Congrats on making the halfway point! I was glad to see another video post on your journey and have been following along since I discovered this series a couple of months ago. I very much look forward to your episodes and love that you are integrating the Native American history into your journey as well.
Thanks much, I'm glad to hear it!
Can’t wait for your next video in this series. I watched al of them in one day. Thank you for incorporating Native American history in your videos. I am Swinomish and Blackfeet.
@@mjolo21 Thanks so much, I'm honored. 😊 It's gonna take me a long time to finish the series (my main work is in full swing now) but hearing that is very motivating! Also that's awesome, the PNT essentially makes a line from one of your heritages to the other, so I can certainly see why it would be of interest! I'll keep trying to do my best to share what I saw and felt on my walk through so many special places.
Awaiting part 7!
Awesome! My game development work has meant my pace has slowed to a crawl, but the next one is on the way.
Brings back so many good memories. I saw the kittens when their eyes were just opening. Didn't see the puppies...ironically Sarah the Trail Angel is involved with a dog rescue org. Amazing that you helped them and then she helped you. Karma. Loved Sitka coffee...was some of the best food and coffee I've ever had on trail. Republic is a special place. Looking forward to viewing the rest of your journey. I put a link to your videos in my blog. Keep up the excellent work!
Thanks much Twig! And that's awesome. I talked a lot with Sarah and got more rides for the next video too haha.
You put a whole new twist on trail angel with your puppy rescue. Absolutely loving this series! Especially the creative camera angles, nature closeups, and the geologic and tribal history. Can't wait for the next one!
Thanks much!
Thanks for saving the puppies but for future reference jerky made for humans has garlic powder and onion which can cause liver failure in dogs.
Oh no! That's very good to know. I figured the meat stick might be a bit rich so I didn't give them too much of it, but if I had known that I certainly would have tried to think if I had anything else! Thanks for the heads up.
Good job with those puppies Keegan. I think we were only a day or two behind you on trail. Sarah mentioned your puppy rescue when she drove us out to Sweat Creak TH. What a summer, eh? 👍
Thanks! I remember meeting a couple briefly outside the Republic grocery when I stopped back in for my second resupply, perhaps that was you? Either way, it certainly was, it certainly was.
@@keegan.o quite possible. my wife remembers seeing you in Republic and that does sound vaguely familiar. 👍
Also enjoying your journey as I know some areas really well (Pasayten, Eureka etc). Well done! If you like feedback, yes the music is too loud in places, and a personal preference of mine would be less plant closeups/tree snags and more trail and campspot pics ... but that's just me 🙂 I do love the explanations of indigenous territories though ...
Thanks for the comment and feedback!
Looking forward to the next video @@keegan.o
Cool as, looking forward to the next one!
criminally underrated channel. music was a little loud tho
Thanks for the feedback, that's good to know for the next one! Still learning with the audio stuff 😅
@@keegan.o yeah man sweet. keep up the solid content. i learn a lot

Thanks for the journey
Great episode - they all are - but really enjoyed this one.
Thanks much! Means a lot :)
Keegan, I know that this was nine years ago, but I hope that you are still monitoring the beautiful comments that people are leaving for you?
Of course! They all mean a lot, and I only got around to editing the version of PCT videos I was happy releasing last year. I will get back to them and finish them after the PNT videos which take precedence as a much newer project. I've been quite busy with game development lately so videos have to take the back seat to something that can pay the bills. At some point I'll do some much quicker videos as well, is my goal.
@@keegan.o I am so happy that you are doing well and making money in your career! I really appreciate you answering this message from a stranger. You’re an awesome guy my friend.
15:43 The small animals that build huge places to live underground in environmentally cool conditions. They clean up dead animals and churn the ground beneath our feet.
Keegan, I really enjoy the history of our First Nation people that had learned to live in all of the different environments of what we call ours now. I have never heard anyone talk about those that came before us and it’s beautiful to learn about from you on this trail. All of those that were here first did not strip all of the resources to become fabulously wealthy. The Giant Sequoias, the Coast Redwoods, animals with beautiful fur, these resources were used, but 100% would go towards survival. Did anyone slaughter animals because ladies in Europe wanted to wear a cute hat or kill dozens for a fashionable coat and nothing else.
You’re a cool guy, Keegan! UA-cam has been recommending some excellent channels lately that have under 1,000 subscribers.
Glad you like the videos!
@@keegan.o Keegan, your style is like nothing I’ve ever seen in a PCT self made video. It’s just like a professional production.
Excellent!
Another great episode Keeg! Really lovely stuff - interesting music, funny, and beautiful.
Thanks again for watching and the love!
Great footage, great editing… 👍🤟
Thank you for making these videos. Not enough PNT videos out there.
We're so glad we were able to meet you and serve you dinner! Goat & Toad
So am I! Really made the day better as you can see since I didn't get into town early enough to have food there haha. ❤️
Great job, keep em coming
Sweet, I just learned about this trail, thanks for the videos!
I'm blown away! These videos are amazing. Love your story telling, the soundtrack, everything! I also really like getting some insight into the towns along the trail. I don't live in the US and it's fascinating to see more what it's actuallly like there, and not just from a movie, you know. Looking forward to see more from you, Keegan. Thanks!
Thanks much for the lovely comment! Working on the next one and looking forward to getting it out pretty soon, just have lots of other life stuff going on the past month as well. Cheers!
I'm thoroughly enjoying this series. Thank you for all the work at the editing desk, you are producing some highly enjoyable content. Greetings from Oz
You conveyed the spookiness very well
Bro, these are incredible!!! Well done. What a tough trail!!! 🤘🕓
Thanks much, I appreciate it! I'll be sure to check out your channel.
Awesome content, I'm from Oroville WA the halfway point of the trail! Can't wait to see you pass through, assuming the ecoli didn't stop you
Thanks! And thankfully it did not-- and I look forward to editing that part, the open scenery around Oroville was definitely memorable.
Keep them coming Keeg! Love 'em!
Shall do!!
Don't stop making the videos, man! It's a lot of effort but we, and future viewers, appreciate your effort. You have a unique voice and story to share! Cheers!
Thanks much for the encouragement!
I hiked from Chief Mtn. to Bonners Ferry in 2019. I thought we had it rough managing the high rainfall that summer, but after seeing the snowpack you dealt with with I realize we had it easy. I don’t even recall seeing snow after Stoney Indian, and we hiked the Whitefish divide the same week you did that year. These videos are truly excellent. Thank you for taking the time to record your journey. I especially loved the creepy editing around crossing the Koocanusa bridge- it’s difficult to capture how those moments feel, but you did it in a such a creative way. The geological and cultural context you sprinkle in is also fascinating. I’m planning on doing a full thru hike of the PNT next summer (2024), and reliving my 2019 section hike through your videos has me totally amped. Can’t wait for the rest of the episodes. P.S. What camera & lenses were you using?
Hey there, thanks much for the comment I appreciate it! The 2022 snow year was definitely abnormal in Montana, haha. I filmed with a Panasonic GH6 and various lenses, I switched out a few over the course of the first couple sections as I tested out what I was willing to carry but eventually settled on the Olympus 8-25 F4, Olympus 60mm Macro (very light), and the Panasonic Lumix G 45-150. Since the GH6 is Micro Four Thirds, double all those focal lengths for FF equivalent. GH6 is a large camera but going M43 meant all my lenses were way smaller/lighter than full frame equivalents so it's a good setup for anyone who likes focal length variety. I actually carried the Panasonic Lumix 100-300 (so 600mm equiv!) lens in glacier, knowing I would likely send it back, which I did in Eureka, haha. I was hoping I would spot a grizzly bear, but oh well! The 8-25 is definitely the bedrock lens in my setup, most I've ever spent on a lens but I think it was worth it. I always like shooting wide in the landscape, I actually wish it went one wider like the 7-14 panasonic, but the versatility of wide angle to 50mm equivalent is pretty unique. One of the biggest things was how to carry all this, and I settled on two HMG camera pods (1 large + 1 regular), one for the camera and one for the other lenses. I also added shock cord from my shoulder straps for better suspension to help keep it from sagging down/jostling when moving, which I attached with mini carabiners, I also attached the camera pods with carabiners so they could be relatively easily swapped around.
Just found your PNT videos and am enjoying every minute. Love the amazing videography and close-up shots and your documentary style with notes on the natural and tribal history. Can't wait for the next episode!
Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!
Love it, enjoying your style of filming, and the choice of trail! Cheers from the PNW <3<3

@@LifeIsBetterByTheBrook Ah that was you, awesome! That was a really nicely timed trail magic! And in all likelihood you will appear briefly in the next episode (pretty sure I am going for the next one ending at Metaline Falls)!
Just wanted to say thank you for these videos. I will start the PNT on July 1st this year and do the first 2 sections (2 sections per year for 5 years to complete). Your videos have been an amazing reference for what I'm about to face. I can't thank you enough. Can't wait to see this all in person in 2 months!
Thanks much and I hope you have a wonderful time out there this year!
Thank you so much Keegan for your superb videos with meaningful narration, you have really put together a wonderful documentary. The video starts at 8:05. @31:18 we get a report about his bowel movements. Just so you know my last bowel movement was 5:45am after some coffee..
Haha, fair points! The bowel movement thing is because I had significant ecoli poisoning before the trip which was lingering on and stopped me from leaving town, I should have told that story more succinctly!
