@10;30+, it is interesting that even the very well informed senior military men featured on this 1980s film would insist on the obsolescence of the American bomber and ICBM components of the strategic nuclear triad, while the F117 and B2 were in the pipeline, which could and would remove most of the vulnerabilities of the bomber component, combined with the fleet of SSBNs, with the new Ohio class and their very accurate next generation MIRVed Tridents, which were already being fielded. ...Also, the 'strategic checkmate' of the GLCMs (Glickums) being produced and fielded at the time isn't considered... Something smells kinda fucky: This whole production reads like marginally Reganesque warmongering, or at least a reckless, ill-informed endorsement of a massive new and destabilizing nuclear delivery/defense/MAD paradigm (see: Star Wars, GLCM, MX, eh?). There are some (relitivly) moderate viewpoints represented in this production as well, but those that are included ring hollow as a token nod to journalistic integrity's doctrine of fair time, which, when taken in total, feels like it exposes this entire vid as political propagandist... crap. I was halfway expecting Kissinger, Ed Teller, and the ghosts of McArthur, LeMay, and McNamara to pop up in this vid calling for space lasers and hundreds of MIRVed peacekeepers. I suppose it's easy to support my proceeding commentary given 20/20 hindsight, but, well... Able Archer, etc? The MX was a first strike weapon, which (even the first 50) shouldn't ever have been built. IMO, the contunious at sea deterrent ought to be our only strategic nuclear weapons platform, while nuclear cruise missles and guided gravity bombs could do the tactial job, easily. One Ohio SSBN (out of 16?) can carry 150+ warheads, each of which are an order of magnitude more destructive than the Nagasaki bomb. I do like the French 'first, one warning shot, then a massive countervalue strike' doctrine. (or the U.K's 'letter of last resort'.)... Interesting vid, though!

I'm Australian, I remember being at primary school in the late '70's being shown a show called 'Beyond the News' that showed where we'd be safe in event of a Soviet nuclear attack. Every capital city was a target, the only safe place was south central WA.

The irony is, the B-52 is still in service. It will outlast both the B1 Lancer, and B2 Stealth Spirit Bombers. The B-52 is expected to be flying 100 years after entering service before it is finally retired. If things keep going the way they are in the world, it will participate in WW3.

In 1987, a German flew a Cessna from Helsinki to Moscow, landing on the Red Square, in 2047, those B52 bombers built in 1962 will be still ready, that's the outlook.

The year is 2023 and our Government has learned NOTHING. We have a weakling President in Joe Biden, who insanely (along with other Democrats and RINOs like Lindsey Graham) is pushing for War with Russia, a country which still has thousands of nuclear weapons and the ability to deliver them to the US. But we should pay attention to whatever nonsense the Media are making up about Trump???? Wake the hell up people! The Global Elite have said they want to reduce the World's Population by 90% and if they have too they will nuclear weapons to do it.

When the Soviet Union collapsed three decades ago, a lot of people were pleased that Cold War was over and eternal peace was realized. But nothing has changed since them. Danger of nuclear wars still exist in Ukraine, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula etc. I wonder what we have learned since then.

It is interesting that they jumped from the B-52 bomber reference, to the B-1 Bomber. We HAD (note past tense) a High Speed bomber that was taken out of service only after 10 years, and that was the B-58 Hustler, a Mach 2 nuclear capable bomber platform. Now we have the B-2, already 30 years old in service, but the B-21 (little brother to the B-2) is coming up the ranks. Perhaps another stealth type cruise missile needs to be created or resurrected?

Interesting to google the number of nuclear 'incidents' that have occurred over the years and read about the likes of Vasily Arkhipov and Stanislav Petrov. Both heroes and both Russian. Oppenheimer could not have been more correct when he said, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."

1983: #RainerRupp (a DDR spy) was able to inform #HVA and #KGB that it was indeed only an exercise, but they still didn’t believe him until he was able, at the last minute, to provide them with #NATO highly classified documentation to prove his assertion. Such an attack just isn't feasible, if so the Russians certainly would've done it already!!! Look at how many DEWs, Distant Early Warning lines and radars we have, Beale AFB (California), Thule AFB (Greenland), RAF Fylingdales (UK), RAF Menwith Hill (UK).........we would easily and quickly see Soviet launches, and with hair trigger alert, we'd massively respond and it would all be over. Again, given the Russians realize this, and knowing they could never succeed in attempting such a preemptive strike, hence both the US and Russia are still here!!!

this for me 100% folly that of course shows some of the policy concerns of the 70s those concerns have not been much reduced whatever the wishful thinking here. Its a trillion dollar failure, a losing game of chicken, and moreover a transparently fatal game threatening the whole world, not limited to nuclear winter for every country, that would never cease being fatal to the home land as its primary effect is to incite and induce a ceaseless arms race with multiple nations that would never be deterred.

Old fear-mongering play for more money to be wasted on the military, which was grifted by the military contractors. In fact, Russia has already won the cold war without firing a shot. They bought off the GOP, got trump elected, and paid them all to destroy Democracy from the inside.
