Grand Portage Gardener
Приєднався 25 бер 2012
Hobby gardener turned farmer, I'm learning every day and making America garden again. We should all have a garden large or small and do what we can with what we have. Working the ground changes your perspective on what it means to be happy and healthy. Good luck and keep gardening!

The season is over for Zone 3b but there might be some more vids throughout the winter of the deepwinter greenhouse. I started a new job that will pay a lot but also take a lot of time. So next years plans are up in the air and depend on my schedule. Have a great winter!

Super hot here right now and I'm stuck at the office. These plants want to live despite my negligence and the weather. let's see how much longer it lasts this year.

it amazes me that I can take 2 weeks away from any gardening whatsoever and it still grows. There are signs of this growing season coming to an end so I better hurry and get my last plantings planted. Thanks for watching!

Wow nice job.
❤
Nice job. Very interesting.
we caught in a trap i can't walk out because I love you to much baby Why can't you see what you doing to me when you don't believe a word i say
This is not Elvis Presley! He never missed a Tone! Vocalist??? Pfff
You're so right!
You can also put a lot of the logs/brush on the bottom of your raised beds, they break down and retain moisture as well as attract beneficial insects/worms, etc.
Looks amazing!! 🌽🌱🍅🥬
Garden is looking good. New here from Creekside Maples.
Looks good
Love it, it sure is beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Clank clank
Nice job
Looks great
Thanks!❤
Wow! Impressive!
LOL, thanks Tim! You still haven't stopped. Come by I'll give the full tour.
Looking great bro!!!!
@@nicksheehan.landscaping473thanks Nick, you ever come to portage swing by. I'll give you some veggies. Maybe on pow wow.
Congrats!
Thanks! Can't wait to get it going. It's been raining nonstop since I made this video so not much more progress.
Nice
So nice😮
I heard the tribe was going to get Bison! Very cool! Do you get to use the manure for your gardens? I’ll ask you all about it at work!!
Looking great! What direction is that clear wall facing?
Thanks it's been a lot of work to get it here. It's south facing.
I love that this exists. I come by every year or so and just smile.
Beautiful!
The camera on my cellphone kept auto adjusting the color but there is a moment where I zoomed out that the true color of the sky can be seen. It was quite incredible how it illuminated everything. There was also a nice rainbow behind me but I didn't capture it on this shot.
I lost everything BUT Kale this year. Construction in a field make the mice move closer. One made her den IN my potatoes and had babies in there! She was eating the potatoes. Another decided my raised beds were an all you can eat buffet. Afids took the tomatoes 3 times before I just decided to give up the fight. It's quite the tick off but what can you do? Oh, I had Green onions and dill. LOTS of that as well
All you can do is try again next year and learn from it. Might take a couple years though lol.
@@duhaimap1 Thankfully we are moving. I believe the construction is to blame for the issues. That and a lack of rain here in Alberta. There is something special about that rain that the gardens just love! :) I said "I won't have a garden this year" including when I was starting the seeds... haha
this is bill cherry
Well from one 3b gardener to another. Outstanding. My squash, pumpkin, corn are not doing well. Thus far this summer 1 day of 25C very cool weather this season. My tomatoes are in greenhouse and doing good. Peppers I planted out and not even a foot tall.
Sounds like we are in the same boat then. Seems like a great year so far for tomatoes. No bush beans though. I think something ate them as they came out of the ground. I'm gonna plant more and see what happens. Just started broccoli seeds for the last round. Good luck!
This cold weather is staying too long. Our tomatoes and squashes are “hanging in there” too. The salad greens are loving the cool weather though.
Seems like my exact thoughts every year in zone 3b. LOL!
Happy gardening in 2022.
Love community gardening. I wonder if they will make a come back in 2022, what with the food price inflation that will continue. Bummer on the July frost. Shoot. 😦
I hope so! Thanks for the comment.
Should change this video , have Vladimir Putin singing about Ukraine 3/16/22
By all means, do it!
I love the Grand Lakes of Minnesota.
Gênio 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏👏👏👏
nice try, but miles away from the real thing . there,s no substitute voor elvis
It was still a great show all those years ago. Except for one thing. It was way to loud for the small venue.
Hang in there niijii!
I am so happy that the peppers came back! This year I decided to put egg shells in the bottom of every seedling I transplanted and then once I get 20 or so egg shells, I crush them and sprinkle around the base of the plants. ALL of them. This is the first year that I haven't had any issues with bugs other than spiders and butterflies! No slugs at all. No beetles at all. I don't know if that was a fluke or not...
I found out those beetles are called Blister Beetles. They really destroy the tops of plants. Maybe I'll get chickens just for the eggshells. Yeah I think the peppers are gonna be amazing in a month.
@@duhaimap1 This is my first year of being successful with more than ONE pepper actually growing. I thought I had accidentally bought jalapeno peppers as they're ALL growing straight up and look like hot peppers! Thankfully they're starting to expand. Gardening is truly a hit and miss. All that matters is that it keeps us busy and when it grows from being dead, we have been successful! Bonus if we actually get decent harvests to eat and or sell! My tomatoes did the whole leaf curl last night. Turns out they were thirsty! I watered them really well and they're fine this morning :)
HI. I am not far away from you. My garden is nowhere near the size of what you have going on there, but most of my stuff is comparable to yours. These cool snaps this year are just playing havoc with gardens.
Yeah it is! I've killed more veggies this year cuz of weather. Hopefully it's warm now though.
Another heatwave coming for Alberta, then you! We're just entering it now. My plants went from almost dead to going crazy with coming back. They're going to produce! My husband told me I need to kiss them goodnight because I am always out checking my plants.. so I did! The funny thing was, the next morning, a pepper started growing! Haha
Oh, I believe they feed off your energy. I can't wait for the heat. Thanks for the heads up.
@@duhaimap1 Yeah here in Edmonton we are at 28 now.. and it's 7:04pm! I actually just made a tent over my brussels sprouts with an old white sheet because they're hating this heat! Monday we're expecting 35... and it's heading your way!
Always really enjoy your garden updates, so cool to see a zone 3 garden. What varieties of watermelon have you been growing, you mentioned they usually don't grow much. There are a few shorter season watermelon varieties that are better suited to high latitude northern areas, usually the smaller varieties of melon (Blacktail Mountain) is decent and fast, but watermelon in general is a desert crop, loves hot and dry. The cabbage looks beautiful. Lettuce is a good choice to follow your cabbage since it's in a different family from cabbage. Could also follow the cabbage with peas or carrots or beets. Your peppers do look amazing. Seems like you are having a really productive year. Take care have a good July
Thanks bro I always appreciate your comments.
Having same problem in my 3b garden beans slow carrots have been a hard crop this year. First year having problem with germination on 3 different beds 8 different types...
Hang in there we are just starting the show.
Gotta love the heat Alberta and Saskatchewan have had! It really helped mine take off
When mine all got bit by the cold, I cut the frozen/dead parts off the next morning and every single thing came back.
@@simplymeconnie4003 yeah, looks like they are coming back nicely. Thanks for the confidence.
@@duhaimap1 You're the pro here bro! You got this! If I can make it happen, you can to! I am on a cement pad, in raised beds and bags. Remember, our seasons just started. :)
I always look forward to your updates! Your doggo is cute. It's so cool to see someone growing in such a cold climate, you are a great example of resilience! Beets/chard are interesting because each seedball you see is actually a structure that houses 2-4 smaller embryos inside of it, so beets almost always require thinning out if you are trying to grow large roots. I don't bother thinning and usually get bunches of like 3-4 plants that make golf ball sized roots. If I were to thin them, I'd get one plant with a tennis-baseball size root, but I like them small and tender and am too lazy to thin. Thinning beets was such a huge problem and labor cost for industrial farms that varieties have been developed that were bred specifically for not being multigerm. You can buy monogerm beet varieties if you don't want to thin them out www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/beets/moneta-monogerm-f1-beet-seed-2319.html?cgid=beets
Wow, yeah that explains it and is pretty much a more clear explanation of what I had heard in the past. I do like a big beet for canning and eating. I will eat small ones too but for processing purposes the bigger ones are better for me. Yeah the cold is great to work in but sucks for growing food. LOL. I will be getting a Bison herd at the end of the year so that'll be a resilient food supply that will be cold tolerant.
Your garden is going to be spectacular! I live in Airdrie and I have high hopes this year too! Looking forward to seeing your garden in time increments! And I cannot wait to see you harvest those peppers LOL. So nice! 👌🏻😀😍🌺
Thanks for the update brother!!
I know you were jonesin for it.
Do you get cucumber beetles
I haven't yet. Never heard of them on other local gardeners either. Maybe its to cold here for them to get a life cycle going.
@@duhaimap1 It is cold here, Canada, Ontario.
@@wathah323 hmm, lucky I guess.

New subscriber from Edmonton area! 20 here today (right now actually) with more snow coming overnight. I can't wait to get my plants in the ground! Loving the hoop house!
I'm so eager too but just hold off a bit. I might experiment with the new hoophouse in a week or 2 and plant some tomatoes. Pretty sure they won't make it though. Thanks for subscribing!
@@duhaimap1 Yeah, I started my tomatoes way too early. Mainly because they usually die on me the first go round. Nope. They ALL made it this year. Some are already starting to flower! I want to, but don't want to, pop the flowers off
@@simplymeconnie4003 i started mine way to early too. Good thing you can plant tomatoes as deep as you want to.
@@duhaimap1 Can we get an AMEN! Haha!
