Crafting a Giant Fantasy Blacksmith Hammer for Castlefest Cosplay
🔨 Welcome to VirrCraft! In today’s video, I’m taking you on a two-part adventure. First, I’ll be crafting a massive fantasy blacksmith hammer, perfect for cosplay or display. This isn’t just any prop - this hammer is the centerpiece of my costume for the Castlefest, a legendary festival in the Netherlands that celebrates all things fantasy, steampunk, and more!
Starting with a 3D-printed base, I’ll walk you through the entire process, from assembling and priming to painting and adding weathering effects. We’ll use techniques like heavy dry brushing and rust effects to give this hammer a truly battle-worn look. But the crafting doesn’t stop there - this project is all about bringing a fantasy character to life.
In the second part of the video, I’ll give you a glimpse into the magic of Castlefest, an event filled with incredible costumes, unique themes, and an atmosphere that has kept me coming back year after year. Whether you’re into Warhammer, steampunk, or pirates, there’s something for everyone at this festival!

great work!
Thanks. True blood color is always nice 😊
the skull is so cool
Yeah, massive skull now a part of local store decorations 👌🏻
cool stuff!
Thank you, indeed. Really close to the original, but at the same time with minor differences
This is so cool, I have to try this Speed paint, Thanks Puck!!
Oh thank you, I’m sure you would love it. It’s a nice tool to speed up and prepare minis for tabletop or for more detailed painting
Looks amazing, as always!
Thank you for watching, as always! 😊 It's always nice to see regular viewers
Looks dope man!
Thank you 😊 the idea was quite spontaneous, but it seems to have turned out pretty cool
Beautifully painted 😊😊😊 Looks like an amazing festival ❤😊❤
Thank you so much 😀 Yeah, that was really great. And having something like a role or a costume - adds interest, actually. time to start thinking about next year and a new image 🙃
@@virrcraft you are very welcome 🤗
Looks amazing! The colors really pop up and the ship is huge, love it
I'm glad you like it ☺️
The details are amazing, love how the colors pop out as well, the lightning also was a nice touch, so in general, you are a BEAST
Thaaaank you ☺️ Wow, I am embarrassed 😳
Por favor no transporta fruta
I have no idea what does it mean tbh...
nice work, have yyou considered trying an oil/enamel wash instead of Nuln oil? In my experience trying to remove nuln oil with a cotton-bud or brush tends to rip the surface it forms. Alternatively, if its the newer contrast based nuln oil - try cleaning it up with a brush dipped in the contrast medium.
oh, thank you ;) I'm not a big fan of shading in general... and as far as I know, to use oil you need to use solvents... something like white spirit... in my memory these are very odorous substances, and I'm not a fan of that... I saw white spirit that didn’t smell (at least that’s what it says on the packaging), but somehow I didn’t dare try... in general, I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but I’ll keep it in mind and maybe I’ll decide in future projects. As for cotton-bud and nuln oil - I have a life hack that I spied... oh, I don’t even remember from whom: Instead of an erasing motion, try twisting the stick. In the video you can see how I'm removing the excesses by rotating the stick rather than swiping it. This helps not to “tear” the surface, and also leaves almost no fibers on the model.
neat, FYI the odorless solvents are still bad for you and just as toxic.
@@antondb6168 yeah. I know… I’m doing 3d printing 😅
het is prachtig geworden! 🤩
Bedankt 😅
Si señor
@@JacobBrown-cj3jn de nada. Gracias por ver (I hope it’s correct translation 😅)

thanks :) I hope you enjoyed watching my video
daaaaaamn !
What a stunning result bro
thank you ;)
The tape form starts curing where the 2 colors touch and it tends to make it awful to use and leaves chunks in it. Also it is rather inconvenient to change the ratio of yellow and blue. More yellow is softer and takes longer to cure, more blue is stiffer and cures faster.
Thank you for this tip. Yes, for the middle part it’s clear and I tried to remove this later as well. For the ratio - interesting. Need to try it :)
What do you think about such projects? do you use something in your games or just came to have a look? :)
go ahead man, never give up 🎉🎉❤❤, you can do it. ♡♡♡♡♡ from Egypt. 😊
Thank you for kind words 😊
That is SOOO GOOOD !!!
Thaaaaaank you for awesome models ;) and I'm glad that you like it!
Great video as above I came across in feed and glad I did, great build.
thank you :) I'm glad, that YT promoting me to someone :)
Do you need to use any special gloves or are any plastic gloves fine?
I don’t remember exactly, but I used the gloves that came with either the mounting foam or the hair dye (I found some on the shelf). regular latex ones or something like that definitely won’t work. If you're not sure, I recommend testing the gloves first by placing a few drops of solvent on them and waiting a couple of minutes. basically mine were like a plastic bag but shaped like gloves and it worked.
@@virrcraft Nice thank you for your reply. In the meanwhile I found out that DCM is desolving most plastic types which makes it dificult to find protective gloves, but there are pva gloves that are used in a lab and these are definately a good protection. But aparenty as long as you dont plan to dump your hands into the DCM you will be just fine with any gloves (as some kind of splash protection).
@@Pontos420 that’s also true. I mean if it dissolve gloves in matter of minutes - it should be fine, coz we need to immerse the model for just a couple of seconds - after which the gloves can be immediately removed. I didn’t had any problems with mine, but I’m very glad that you care about safety! I first tried regular latex gloves and they were destroyed in the matter of seconds (tried not on my hands 😅)
Came across your video in my feed…. Really nicely built tavern and good quality video!!!! ❤😊❤
Oh really? I'm so glad that my video appeared on your feed :) I hope you will also like the new videos - welcome to the channel :)
@@virrcraft absolutely!!! I will definitely be watching 😊 And looking forward to future projects
@@cerisekappes580 There are definitely a couple of ideas that I want to implement as soon as possible :) both - for crafting and for painting
@@virrcraft sounds great 😊
Hi all. Long time no see! This was a challenging project, plus I have, as you may have noticed, made some improvements (hopefully) to the quality of the videos and continue to improve the videos in general. Yes, there is also a direction in terms of sound - I will try to improve this in future videos. In the meantime, thanks to everyone who watches, likes and doesn’t forget to subscribe to my channel! If you have any questions, I will be glad to answer them in the comments!
Wow, thats an amazing work!

Great video and awesome paint job!
Wow, thank you so much for this feedback! Work in progress on the next video :) so stay tuned ;)
Great Video!!..thanks 👍
Oh, thank you! I have few more to watch - I hope you can enjoy them as well 👍🏻
I really like this set. 🖌
Thanks. Which color you like more than the others from this set?
@@virrcraft The Salmon is very cool.
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Very nice . I can't print stuff, so watching models like this is great.
Thank you! Glad that could help you to enjoy the view. Why you can’t print? Don’t have 3d printer or something else (if not a secret)?
Great video.
Thank you, do you like an idea of bottle toppers?
Yes i use bottle toppers. I have some of Puck and some of my own dingo @@virrcraft
@@DingoPaintsMinis wow, that’s really impressive! Where I can check yours? I’m really curious
Interesting, the difference between the light and dark sides seems a lot less pronounced than I expected from my experience with the non-metallic speedpaints. I guess the metallics just have to have more opaqueness to work well.
Indeed. I also expected to have bigger difference, but still good to have this comparison. I think with normal acrylic or even with normal speed paint/contrast paint differences will be more noticeable… you can try and tell me with your products how it work!
Great video. Editing, and sound were great. Voice over was informative, but to the point. Showing the process and the result at the same time was a great idea. A+ 😎🤙
Thank you :) it’s very nice to receive such feedback. I hope you can also enjoy other videos on the channel - welcome
Awesome video. I love that you did a light and dark side of the toppers. Their is such a difference in the two sides in most of those. I will be printing those types off when I get me a set of speed paints.
Thank you, I hope you will get your set soon. Yeah, this idea came to my mind during the painting - I just thought what if… and here we go :)
Great video! I believe that the original army painter war paints are the ones with extra liquid. Their other paints, including the new fanatics line, do not.
Thank you, new line is awesome, I need to try it as well! Have you already tried it?
FIRST! MOAR PUCK HEADS! I DEMAND IT!!!!
ahaha, hell yeah! thank you, Ty for this topper and for everything what you're doing for 3D Printing community! Much appreciate it! I really proud of to be a part (even small) of this huge community!
Step 0 is really important indeed !! Love the vidéo and paints, Thanks a lot !!!
Exactly! It will be so hard to paint miniatures without miniatures 🤣 Thanks for such a great releases! I hope you like the final results ;)
Looking nice!
