Simon McCorry: Strange Charm
Animation by Tim Hawkins for Simon McCorry's Strange Charm taken from his new album And Where Are You Really From? released 19th March 2021 via Polar Seas Recordings...
"I’ve worked with Tim Hawkins on Guy Davies’s debut feature Philophobia (As I Am) as well as a handful of Guy’s short films. I didn’t know his work as an animator until he asked me to write music for a short film of his - The Two of Us. I really liked the scratchy quirky characterful nature of his work and it felt very natural for me to work with as a composer. So I was intrigued to see how that would be the other way round. For Tim to create an animation film to a track on my new album And Where Are You Really From? In collaborations I try not to give what my thoughts are about the themes and meanings, at least not to begin with. I’m interested in an unadulterated and immediate response. I think if a work is too guided by thought it loses something, it loses the chance of a life of its own. In the first outline of his ideas, Tim picked up on a theme of the cosmic, the microscopic and an idea of complex evolving shapes based on fractals. I love that, an idea with a strange charm of its own. Strange Charm could be about the interconnectedness of an individual, maybe myself not as part of a tree or web but as an eddy in a stream. A small part of a great river that passes through many places but with little consciousness of the rain falling on the hills from which it starts or the ocean to which it flows and wonders ‘And Where Am I Really From?’" - Simon McCorry
"I was drawn to Strange Charm by the complexity of the textures and sounds that form and move on a micro level through each bar, but also on a macro scale throughout the track. They felt to me like atoms or microbes that appear to exist individually under a microscope but form part of a larger object if you pull back from them. It was only after discussing my idea with Simon that he told me that Strange and Charm are types of quark, so I’d serendipitously stumbled across a very fitting interpretation of the track. I used 3D fractals to visualise the concept as they have a very beautiful, organic look and allowed me to create shapes that could appear to be tiny particles or huge, complex structures. Please You Draw Near (PYDN) is a collaboration between Harriet Riley, Maia Ayling and Tom Jacob. Created during the 2020 lockdown, it uses aerial circus, live music and text from Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ to explore themes of isolation, powerlessness and determination. It responds to the currently pertinent question, “what is an artist without an audience?”. Maia combines her experience in ci...

"I have known Jon for many years. He creates for the love of it with no obvious goal. He sees the world very differently to everyone else. He tends to favour magic over fact. He has a unique spin on everything. Even the most mundane conversations can quickly slip into time travel or how his dog Teddy, has a magical aura. Aside from all of his wonderful creations, the most overwhelming character...

May the 1st marks the midway point between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice. It is a time of fertility and natural abundance; a marriage of sun and earth. The druids of our Celtic lineage in Britain marked this time with the fire festival known as Beltane. Over thousands of years influence and customs transformed, but these nature based celebrations lived on becoming the folk festival...

Sound Records Sessions - Tom Monobrow pt.3
Here from the new Tiny Desk with Dua Lipa. I loved Georgie’s playing in that, and checking out her solo stuff really showcases her amazing skill! The speed and dexterity here is so impressive.
Georgie is absolutely incredible! I had the chance to see her live multiple shows during the Radical Optimism tour, and her talent left me in awe. Her piano solo intros for ‘Anything for Love’ and ‘Happy for You’ were absolutely breathtaking, and the way she transitioned to the synth added so much depth and emotion to every performance. Watching her live video here reminded me of just how versatile she is blending her classical piano roots with innovative synth work so seamlessly. She brings so much energy and emotion to the stage, and I can’t wait to see her perform more in the future. She truly makes every concert unforgettable 🔥
My favorite pieces, ‘Fading’ and ‘Home,’ showcase her ability to blend her classical piano roots with innovative synth work so beautifully.
Dua Lipa Tiny Desk sent me here. Love you, Georgie❤❤❤
Mesmerising Georgie!!! Frankly and honestly, Dua Lipa is blessed to have this legendary Georgie Ward to thythmise the thrilling audience…WOW!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Georgie...where are you from?.. When are you coming to Barcelona?.
So refreshingly novel and beautiful. 🎉
Wow only got to know you by seeing you support dua lipa and always looked so alive. Love your work.
Dua Lipa's touring keyboardist, ladies and gentleman. Brilliant. 💕
Yes!
Nice to see some real talent on UA-cam once in a while. Her composition on piano is far more interesting than her synth stuff, which suggests the two forms require a different skill set of some sort ...😊
Don’t see the sh-2 in action enough!
sh-09*
@ my bad!
somehow the composition that connected with me the most was the slowest, simple track in the end.
Wow the bass coming out of that SH is insane. Great performance! I hope to someday have 1/1000th of the talent she has.
Fr I love that bass sound!
Awesome, always inspiring ❤🎹💫
How comes I discover this only in December 2023!!! Are those damn algorithms on strike?!
Ward is a human sequencer!. Lovely piece.
I met him on an evening with prose and poetry with John Arlott and Laurie Lee,Laurie signed his latest book for me "I can't stay long",such a lovely, humble man who truly loved the countryside and it's way of life,it was a pleasure to have met him.
Amazing performance!
She's absolutely in the flow state.. and this very original performance really teach me some things on what's really important in live performance..
I would love to meet him and talk with him. He's one if a kind and so special.
Absolutely superb!
Absolutely wonderful.
Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury is still my favourite book to read in Summer. But I am very fond of Laurie Lee. I just feel that the same world is their to be discovered when I read Dandelion wine. Where as Laurie Lee's seems to have vanished. It makes me mournful.
Lovely!
Love this. So creative and mystical.
Wow, what a performance. Love it
This England. Worth holding on to.
Thank you so much for the upload. My Dad and his mate Martin are in the Woolpack at the 14 minute mark, my Dad (died 16 years ago) on the right and Martin (died over 25 years ago) on the left. Martin always had his little dog Jet under the bench. So wonderful to see, this has made me so happy ❤ Thank you
Hiya sis.
Hey neighbourino ❤
Thank god this slow moving tribute exists
Good story, but skip on the religion thingee.
Dab chicks are Little Grebes apparently. Laurie Lee didn’t invent the name after all (according to the real Rosie of Cider With Rosie (who was actually his cousin) he was known locally as being prone to exaggeration, so I suppose it shouldn’t be a huge surprise). Also, blackbirds don’t migrate to Africa!
He's not saying that he made up the name dab chick, but that he made up the sighting of it that he described in the essay that won his prize. And as he has made clear , there was no real Rosie. Rosie was an amalgam of a number of girls of the valley and his childhood/youth.
so beautiful
It makes Morris look like a Cult or Something like that....and I am uncomfortable about that....
Agreed - while Morris and Sword almost certainly has ritual origins (fertility dances etc) it was not bell, book and candle witchcraft.
I love this 😊
Fantastic to hear Laurie Lee,s unique voice and memories thanks for sharing.
If you liked that do you know that audible have him reading As I Walked Out One Summer Morn. It’s a lovely rich characterful voice. The poet reading his own poetic words. Similar to this lovely film.
A true romantic.
Hi Darlin Jon 🦋💕
I haven't seen Jon since the Severn Revels, great bloke, a 'mad' arty type like myself. Interesting to see his workshop. Thanks
Very cool set. Beautiful pieces and amazing performance.
visuals around the three minute point are so interesting, like black clouds changing into various forms..
Nice work. I'm doing much the same with my music vids - fractals are awesome, I use mandelbulber. Nice support fellow musicians/fractalheads! Liked and subcribed and I've put this on my YT ambient chill playlist :-)
thanks
A beautiful slow dance of shape shifting elegance. I love it.
Stunning! Love Simon's work and the visuals complement it so well!
Absolutely delicious. Stunning collaborative work!
gorgeous work.
beautifully performed & filmed
Wonderful!! 👏👏👏
Really enjoyed that. Brilliant! Than you!
Very impressive skills (I also got here via sonicstate).
WOW
Yes! Her SH09 mod lever has snapped off too. That's probably the only thing I will ever have in common with this video. The talent is mind blowing🔥🔥🔥🔥
It’s an sh-2!
