Reel Guys Fishing
Приєднався 19 чер 2022
Just a guy and my friends going fishing and hoping to share information and the love of fishing.
Salmon and Brown Trout - Burt Dam
My buddy Jason and I had to call an audible because the weather wasn't cooperating for fishing Steelhead in Erie so we headed up to NY and fished Burt Dam for the first time. Very interesting. Did keep one salmon for eggs and everything else was released. It was great to get into some good sized Brown Trout and I was glad Jason got to experience this type of fishing.

Lake Erie Steelhead - October 2024
Переглядів 1,1 тис.21 день тому
We waited out the weather for almost the whole week in order to fish Trout Run and it was well worth it. It's the same thing every year where "we need rain" is the repeated phrase through the early fall but this year it's serious. Not that there are not some fish in the creeks but the few that are in are highly pressured, confined to the lower sections, and in almost stagnant and clear water. T...
Cheap Fly Reel Review - Did I Waste $40?
Переглядів 59Рік тому
I bought just about the cheapest fly reel I could find on Amazon and put it to the test over the summer and then on a Salmon trip to see if you can get away with not spending $100's and still handle big fish. Amazon - a.co/d/96Ieg7R This is a 7/8 reel and it was paired with an 8 wt rod I built myself. If you have used this reel yourself, please let me know in the comments what you thought of it...

Non-Stop Action on Live Bait... White Bass!
Переглядів 82Рік тому
Decided to net some of the bait swimming along the rocks and go "old school" for the night. Had a blast with all the white bass you could want with a couple smallmouth and a hybrid striper mixed in for good measure. I did switch up to lures/flies for a time in the middle. Mainly to see if the artificial's were producing anything close to the live bait. They were not. Fun fishing for sure and I ...

After not being happy with my videos for the past few weeks (most of the footage you probably will never see), I decided to just get back to fishing. I had gotten in the habit of deciding what I was going to do for a video before I got to the water and either that idea wasn't going to work for conditions or other factors just made for bad video. Don't get me wrong, I was catching fish. The wall...
Tying up spawn sacs for Steelhead and Salmon
Переглядів 55Рік тому
Wanted to show you a quick video of trying up the spawn sacs I will be using next fall for Steelhead (mostly) and Salmon. The sacs I'm showing are tied using floater beads. For the size hook I use (Gamakatsu Octopus Circle size 8 - 4), 3 floater beads are just right to get it off the bottom and into the strike zone. If you prefer fishing under a float, you can certainly do them without floaters...

I'm Firing My Net-Man... A guide to what NOT to do
wonder if you haver ever tried the cameo 2 instead of the circut? If so, how go is it compare to the circut? Thanx for the tutorial. It help me alot.
I have not used the Cameo. From what I hear there's very little difference. I do most of my work outside the software anyway and just bring in files for the final sizing and cut.
Hey what what gram float are you using and did you run any split shot with that Maribou?
@@LeviCorbin-n2l Those were 15g. Jig was 1/16 oz and I did have 1 split shot on but I’m horrible with sizes so I’ll just say “medium”. Jig itself wasn’t enough to make float sit right in wind and current. Was real breezy that day.
What a day. Good video
cool video but gotta change that font color
Those are some good size fish.
Nice fish. 9.6lbs. Jealous!!!
Need White font … hard to read blue.
White didn't work well either. Blue looked better before I uploaded it. Make sure you are on HD quality and it looks a little better.
Just made my Monday !!! Love the Rocky music. Fish on !!
Should’ve come with us. It was on fire like this all day.
Hell yeah bro nice video nice fish
@@luke5586 As soon as I have a chance to edit, will have a full video for that day. It was epic! Lost count of hookups and fish landed. Probably 30-40 landed.
Very nice. Lots of work. Please increase your volume. Very difficult to hear
Dang if your that close to lake that’s a heck of a hike I don’t know where closest public parking would be isn’t it mostly private land in that area?
We were fishing the DSR and the walk to the western end was probably a mile plus. Well maintained paths but still a hike carrying gear. Not much public (if anything) for the first 3 miles. After that there's plenty of options.
Were you using 2mm thick EVA or 3mm? Thanks!
That was 2mm
@@reelguysfishing I just bought my cricut and having trouble getting it to cut from an image that I uploaded like you did. It wants to print to a printer first. Any tips on what I may be doing wrong? Thanks!
@@WILLIAM-i1h So I do the color separation in just a basic image editing package and when you import each layer into the project do it as a cut image instead of a print image.
Very nice
What this world needs is more glitter
I used it for the first time Sunday. I like it! And in a pinch I can signal aircraft to my location.
Can you post a link for the sheets of EVA you use? Thanks
Got them off Amazon a while back. Checked and that specific link says not available anymore but just search and you will find so many of them.
Nice video, was that TB on the other side of stream?
Negative ghost rider…. We’re going to have to take extreme measures this year to get him out.
Are you using the Circut Maker 3 or a different version of the Circut?
It's the Maker 2 I believe. Got it a couple years ago for my daughter to use for modeling architecture projects because it would do the balsa. She ended up rarely using it but I do a fair amount of vinyl and now EVA. Recently started following another rod builder who uses a Cricuit for some of her stuff but she assembles it differently by hand cutting the EVA round to inlay the Cricuit cut pieces into it. I'm going to give that a try on my next one. I just can't get the seam as invisible as I would like with my technique.
Thanks for the reply. I’ve had my eye on a Cricut but didn’t want to buy more than I need. I’m dying to do inlays and hand cutting has proved disappointing. I presume you’re talking about Mary’s vids. She isn’t afraid to go big or go home.
@@LeinadNosredna68 Yep... That's her. She does some incredible stuff. I've always done function over style. Not that my stuff is boring, but I always built for a specific application and the fisherman's physical attributes and then throw a nice wrap on. Past coupe years I started looking at more "decorative" things. Working on one where I used gold and silver leaf over the whole rod and am going to start wrapping it soon.
If I get into fly fishing, which I do, this would seem to be the perfect reel.
It really is good for the price. I'm probably going to get a second one to replace the reel on the original combo I bought when I got into fly fishing for bigger species.
Great snagging
An unfortunate byproduct
Tight lines God bless...... nice video almost well won't say it 😂
Glad you’re back at it. They are a beautiful creature. Be safe and keep hookin
Thanks. Gotta remember I'm not 18 anymore. Falls on boulders while trying to get to a prime fishing spot have more consequences now. 😀
what fly were you using? great vid!
Mostly black egg sucking leech in low light and white streamers/zonkers when the sun was higher. Red, blue, and green egg patterns were working for others in the group.
don’t think you’re safe too, be oiled up and ready
haha That 8wt was puttin in some work!!! Awesome to see how much drag they pull and how high some of them jumped! Very cool!!!
I was concerned about the 8wt. My main rod (the grey one) was brand new I made for this trip. I wanted a 9wt but the place I buy blanks from didn't have any in stock. But I was happy with its performance and I can still use it for steelhead. One guy on the trip did have a fish break his rod. :(
Every angler needs to experience this. I was up there two weeks ago. Fly only section. I was using a 8 wt. too. It’s amazing
@@Yamom2323 💯I was a little hesitant / intimidated for a first trip so it was great going with guys that have done it before.
that beautiful, thank you for your content
Nice man
Great video...ar the inlays still holding strong? I was surprised to hear the super glue was holding the gaps of the inlay together. Where do you get your foam sheets and thin core?
Yeah, still holding up although I can't say I've used and abused them too much yet. Believe it or not, I pick up most of it at craft stores. Cosplay is getting more popular and they use the EVA foam in their costumes. JoAnn's Fabric has multiple sizes of the round cores and if you can't find the sheet colors you want there or Hobby Lobby, you can but them off Amazon although they are relatively small. I'm still looking for good color selection in 5mm thickness. Generally I can only find black and white. I think 5mm would be the best option. the 2mm is so easy to sand through.
Will more than 6 loops work?
Yes. 6 is more of a general guideline. Line size and hook size play a factor. Thinner line you can do more without an issue. Larger hook you can do more. I'm sure there's a point with thicker line where you can't easily cinch the knot down but with 8-15 lb line I've done as many as 8-9 loops without issue. Never had a need to do more. If for whatever reason you were using 6 lb line on an 8/0 hook, you would want to and should easily be able to do 10-12 or more.
Thought I was only one who used the Cricut lolol
I decided to give it a try. I use it for many other materials so figured why not. I mainly do rods for myself and some friends even though I've been doing it for 40 years. But if you have any tips and tricks for assembly of the EVA, feel free to share.
Which machine do I need
@@marcpfaff1947 I use the Cricut Maker but the Air/Air2 should work the same. I would not go with the smaller format like the Joy just because I don't think it will give you enough room on the mat but functionally it should work too.
Hybrids are unicorns to me. I’m on a quest to land one on 4lb line then 2. Love the variety in your content brother. Just earned a loyal subscriber 😎👍🔑🙌
Appreciate it. I love ultralight fishing. Unfortunately in that spot it's nearly impossible to land a hybrid of any size on 4lb. They get in that current and it's game over. The rocks are too dangerous to chase them downstream so you have to pull them back up against it. I have landed a few on 6 while fishing right against the rocks for walleye/sauger but they were not in good shape by the time I landed them. Got the good release but reviving them was tough. I did hook one I suspect was close to double digits on 6 and I had to tighten down and pop him off when I saw spool. LOL Did get one the other day that was smaller on the fly rod. That was fun.
Thank you so much. I don't use any other method now.
I was just watching a video today about "why your knots matter" (or something like that) regarding salmon fishing in NY. They mentioned a snell and a double polymar and then said they would discuss the double polymar because it was easier to tie. I really want to give them the link to this video. 😉
Was that a white bucktail?
In the end, I think I got 1/2 on the white bucktail and 1/2 on the green/silver swimbait. BTW - I need more bucktails... lost my last 1 oz one last night. LOL
Location ?? Love the double with the stick fish. Nice action.
I can’t give away the location. Promised some of the regulars I wouldn’t say. But if you ever want to go let me know.
@@reelguysfishing Some many rules with utube.
😮Congrats!!!! Thats a beast!!!👍👍
Ended up getting 2 virtually the same size. Other was 5-3. Both 25 inches.
If your gonna film it show it.
It isn’t a fishing trip until she falls in the water or gets soaked in some manner.
Nice video. Another form of ice fishing. Spring is here.
Good stuff!!
45° angles and precise cuts with the work knife... you have leveled up my friend. Lets Go Pens! H2P!
Next video you need TB as a guest !!!! How much for a C7 Corvette logo personalized rod? Need to keep video down to 15 minute limit don’t have that long attention span. Older person.
If you want one let’s talk. I have a couple projects in the works but I can squeeze something in for you. You talking functional like you are actually going to come out with us and fish or you want a showpiece to hang over the fireplace? Yeah, I know this one was long. You should have seen it before I edited it down. Tried to keep it to mostly relevant information.
I want to see more TB Good luck with Channel Love it !!!
I do too! He's a busy man and always has something going on. If you want to get out on the water with me just let me know.
I never seen this method before, and I like this alot!!!! Like you said very quick and very easy to tie! I think this would be the perfect snell for some chicken liver to help hold it on!!! Thanks for the vid and thanks for the shout out I appreciate it!!!
I wasn't even thinking chicken liver (been so long since I fished with that) but should work just fine. There is another version I've seen for an egg loop but I haven't perfected it yet, But honesty, this works perfect for me. I may hit a spot or 2 on the Mon this weekend. Staying away from my normal spot up in Beaver on the Ohio... :(
@@reelguysfishing I used to use chicken liver every weekend for channel cats, but I may only do it a few times a year now. I have been very busy lately and completely behind on making videos or even fishing lately, but i feel like the locks on the mon should be doin good very soon. Yeah you wont see me headin to ohio to do anyfishin for awhile haha.
Fantastic video as usual and your correlation between the Solunar highs and the bite is "reel" interesting. Maybe its just me, but the Steelhead and our native trout particularly seem to be wired into the Solunar activity. There are just some days and even hours when they are totally on and others when they are completely closed lip. Regardless, its always a great day fishing with you bud!
What part of the Lake Erie? Is it PA or Ohio site?
That was Erie - Trout Run. Not spoiling any spots here... Everyone knows this spot. LOL
What u doing step fish
Bad lighting
Come with me next time and you can carry the lights down the hill. ;) Actually, this video was the reason I got a new camera with a better night mode. You, me, and John need to go out this summer and I'll put you on some nice fish.
@@reelguysfishing I would love to go fishing tim!
Thats a crazy lookin foy but looks like it made for an awesome fishin trip!
Yeah... I figure purple and green are on a number of popular steelhead flies and I added the red rubber band for "something different" and when I was done I was like "damn that looks good".
Great video!
Great video. These look like browns with the spots, but maybe the cold water is bringing out more of a rainbow coloring than we would typically see in the warmer water. Reel nice with the fly rod!
Yeah, except for that one they have all been definite Browns. Seems like if they are over about 13" they are colored up nicely. Smaller and they are not.
After watching it a couple more times and watching another video of winter rainbow fishing, I'm going to say that one in question was a rainbow. In the other video I saw, the rainbow markings matched exactly what mine had. Size of fish and water conditions were similar to mine and their video was shot in the same week in the same region.
Nice job. I like how you actually showed what you were using. Please keep the content coming.
I picked up a Swisstech head lamp at Walmart for less than $30. Rechargeable & seems to last forever. Great for night fishing. Also, I use a power bank battery for the camera that I keep in my coat pocket or strapped to my chesty. Everything works longer than I really need. I recommend posting some #shorts on a regular basis. You can learn about them right here on youtube. Aside from that, I would appreciate more detailed information as to your locations. Traveling to SW PA for walleyes and fishing in general is on my bucket list. I'm on the Susquehanna River in NE PA. Do folks take boats on the Ohio River much? Can you recommend any landings near good walleyes? Keep up the good work!
Yeah, I have several power banks I could use but I'm always leery about having the cord coming out the side and catching it on something resulting in busting the connector. Really prefer to have my "real" camera on a tripod and had it with me that night but with the rain coming in and having to work my way down the steep bank to get to the river, I decided to keep it in the car. Hate filming at night but I just ordered a new camera with a night mode that is supposed to be really good in those conditions. Should have it this week so maybe have a couple nights more I can get some fishing in before that spot gets too dangerous for the winter. There are boats on the Ohio all the time. I believe this location there is a restriction were you can't get within maybe 300-400 yds of the dam. There are buoys out there and I never see anyone go past them but I haven't looked up the regs so just a guess. As far as boat ramps, not terribly familiar with them in this area. There is the Ohioville Borough Boat Ramp in this section which is right on the OH/PA border. Looks decent with nice paved parking. Don't know if there is a launch fee. Since there are dams and locks all along, you just need to pick the section you want to fish ahead of time. And in this area since you also have Ohio and WV to deal with, you just need to make sure what water you are in and regs there. Not sure if the license is reciprocal in a boat in those waters. It isn't from shore. ;) If you want to hit up the downtown Pittsburgh area, there are walking trails and marinas all over the 3 rivers area. Best access if you want to not be right downtown is on the Monongahela. Duck Hallow Trail on the north side of the river is pretty decent.
