Plant Native
Приєднався 12 гру 2011
Ditching our New Jersey lawn, replacing with native plants & watching the magic unfold. I garden for wildlife by choosing host plants for insects to reproduce on & native plants that produce seeds or fruit for birds and small critters. I live in an area with high deer-pressure so I am learning to plant creatively. I also garden on a budget. Come along and learn how you can help heal your little part of the planet by choosing native plants.

Side garden in July
I’ve been working on getting more native NJ plants in this long, narrow side garden. I’d love to plant more Spicebush here, but alas….my space is small.

Create native plant beds by simply leaving the fallen leaves

I took the advice from @humanegardener and @thecommonmilkweed Leaving your fallen leaves works perfectly to reduce your lawn area so you can create more opportunities to plant #native plants for birds, butterflies, bees & small beasts like chipmunks and squirrels. Super easy on the back and joints, no sod removal needed! Maybe spend a little time now assessing where good areas would be to reduc...

@@thecommonmilkweed yay!!!
This is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY cool!!!! This area is just gorgeous!!!
@@thecommonmilkweed thank you! I’m adding more black cohosh this spring
Awww❤ lovely
@@awildapproach thank you!
that’s good to hear! Do you replant them every year? Mine didn’t come back. Maybe they are biennial or annual… I forget. Did yours reseed itself?
@@awildapproach They do come back each year and it self-seeds robustly in more shady spots. Supposedly they are short lived but these ones have been going on for about four years.
@@PlantNative Ah! Mine only lived for like 2 years. I bet mine were in too much dry sun.
Hell yeah!!! :D
Your lobelia looks amazing!! Wow! Is that a wet spot or just medium moisture?
@@awildapproach Thank you! That’s a medium moisture spot. But even with our severe droughts this summer they were fine. 🩷
Love the mix of Asclepias that you have all together - the pollinators are clearly happy! I personally love the smell of the swamp milkweed the best - I think it smells like cotton candy! 💚
Lovely - I'll have to take a look at what this looks like in bloom!
I farted when i watching this video😂😂
I love seeing these little circular holes in leaves so much.
I love this plant. I ended up with one by accident. Happy accident, though! I saw the seed heads a while ago and they were still very tight, but now I've lost track of them. Maybe they fluffed off and blew away. We've had lots of wind for weeks.
catarpie mukbang 😂😂😂😂
Lovely 💚
True words! Love new england aster!! 💚
I just planted some this year! Love it.
Helpful - has some similarities to poison ivy! #plantnative! 💚

Fabulous job! It's looking so great! 💚
@@TheSuburbanGardenista that means a lot! Thank you!
@@PlantNative it's amazing how it can make a difference so quickly! The pollinators say thank you too!! 💚🦋💚🐝🐞🪲
I just bought one at my local farmers market from a nice couple who sells only native plants. My long term goal is to make my whole yard nothing but ground cover so I don’t have to mow the grass anymore.
@@tybrady4598 Wow! I hope you start a channel so we can all see your progress!
Very nice! The bird is very cute
Those are so cute!
Looks wonderful!!! I don't get to watch many videos on UA-cam, but it's so fun to find you here. Woo hoo!!! :)
@@thecommonmilkweed Thank you, Steve and you are an inspiration to me. Your videos got me started.

@@CompetitiveFishingFreak That’s fantastic!!
How well does calico aster socialize in your yard? I had to pull it out of my all-native garden because it didn’t play nice. Even goldenrod was stunted in the all-calico forest it made for itself. I am having to re-build. My fault as I let them play survival of the fittest
@@wildforwestwindsor I have just recently pulled up some that are taking over other plants like yellow pimpernel. Easy pulling. I then leave the stems lying next to other asters in case I have any insects hosting on them like Pearl Crescent caterpillars. I’ll never get rid of them all, they are great in the fall.
@PlantNative I think they are native to my yard (I never planted them), so I may have planted the other native plants in their territory. No other explanation for how fast they took over. I have them in the wildflower preserve that I care for, which has hard clay and they haven't colonized the area quite as aggressively as it did my yard. What area of NJ are you in?

Kinda jealous of the milkweed patch! Still trying to get mine going and spreading. Nice vid! Thanks for sharing. I like seeing what others are doing in different regions/areas. Just subbed so I can see what's next!
Wow!! Thanks so much! It’s great to hear people interested in planting Milkweed, such a simple thing to do to help them.
I'm also jealous over here too! 💚
They are so cute!
Bats live in chimneys
I wasn’t aware that bats did that, too. Thanks
@@PlantNative I grew up across the street from a school when I was a kid, in the summertime when it got dark you had to go in because the bats would stream out of the chimney of the school, they have a distinctive flying pattern because they’re blind so they rely on their ears to guide them that’s why it looks so eradicate when they fly into the chimney.
Such wonderful birds…
These are so lovely 💚
That's cool and cheap, thanks for sharing
I love seeing my mayapples come up! These look great.
wonderful video! I planted mayapples, ebony spleenwort, and red columbine under my black cherry tree this past fall, and now I'm reaping the rewards! Only one of three mayapples didn't make it. All the other plants survived and are doing their thing. So excited! Thanks for sharing your lovely video with us. :)
🌱
Really excited to try these!
Did you do anything to scarifiy them?
I did. I scratched them a bit between sandpaper.
Interesting! Love this little pond! 💚
Very cool footage. I appreciate the butterfly beauties.🦋 I'm a new subscriber 🌞
Thank you! 🌿
Exactly! This is the way! We use what we have when we can, and adding in native plants where we are sick of having boring old lawn. Love it. Excited to see your spring and summer tours. Leaves are nature's mulch!
OK, what is it that is wiggling?
Grub or larvae of some sort. It’ll likely make its way under the leaves to pupate. I think it’s a Honey Locust Plant Bug.
It’s a bit freaky. 🙂
Oh! Interesting shot! Thanks for sharing. :) Look at it wiggle, haha. #leavetheleaves
This is so cool. I need to do this!
I love your bog garden! And yes, leave the leaves, people.☺
Great job getting such close up footage of her. Butterflies are my favorite.
I love your milkweed patch! Those swamp milkweed blooms look beautiful, love the sign you have there, and those headboard and footboard pieces are a great idea for holding up some flopping plants! I actually have some in my basement, so I may just try that with my goldenrods and asters for next year! Thanks for sharing.
My next expansion to my butterfly rearing next year. I'm searching for the Virginia Snake Root,a host plant for the pipevine. Can you please help me
I found Aristolochia serpentaria seeds for sale at Sheffields Seeds. It’s Sheffields.com. They are very pricey. 12 seeds for $29.95. GeorgiaVines.com sells 5 seeds for $13 but they’re out of stock. Maybe they have a wait list? Also, I see plants listed for sale at naturescapesofbeaufort.com. They have two plants in stock and they are $25 each. Sounds like your garden is wonderful! Thanks for your comment.
Hmm isn’t that Washington DC?
Very cool! 🐝
I have milkweeds all over my yard I love seeing them come chill for awhile❤
They are stunning! Milkweeds are incredible. They life on them and the Monarchs spend so much time in your ecosystem you’ve created for them.
