Call me weird, which I am, but I mean this with the best intentions. My earliest opinions on suicide were basically the mirror of my family. I was raised to believe that suicide is selfish and anyone who does it is a bad person and will suffer in the next life (my family is religious). When I entered my late teens, I slowly began to understand the realities of life and the struggle that comes with it, and then I understood why people took their own lives, and no longer saw them as bad or selfish at all. They were just people who were suffering inside and wanted peace. Initially I saw the act of stopping someone from suicide as a kind and gracious thing to do. And while I believe that in most cases, the intentions of the person stopping someone are pure and good, I have recently had a moral realisation. If I saw someone who was attempting to take their life, would I save them? Do I have the right? If I did try to save them, I feel that I would have an obligation to remain a presence in their life and give them a reason to live, to continue. Otherwise, what would be the point? I would simply be prolonging their suffering. Do I have the right to tell someone that they have no right to end a life that they didn't even ask for in the first place? That they should be forced to continue a life in which they are not happy and find little reason to carry on? It's a tricky one. If it was a loved one i.e. a friend or family member, I guess my natural instincts would kick in and I would want to do whatever it took to stop them from committing suicide. But if it was a stranger, I would probably have this moral compass spinning in my head erratically. I'm not sure what this makes me.
