Atom Bomb Hiroshima - Fukuro-machi Elementary School Peace Museum destroyed.
Fukuro-machi Elementary School Peace Museum in Hiroshima, Japan
Historical Background: The Fukuro-machi Elementary School Peace Museum is dedicated to preserving the history and impact of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Located approximately 500 yards (450 meters) from the hypocenter, it was the second closest school to the explosion after Honkawa Elementary School. The devastating blast and subsequent fires destroyed most of the school, sparing only the west building made of sturdier reinforced concrete. Tragically, nearly everyone inside perished, except for three pupils who miraculously survived by being in a sheltered part of the basement at the time of the blast.
Post-Bombing Role: After the bombing, the surviving Concrete West building became a crucial relief station where survivors received medical treatment under dire conditions. It also functioned as an information center, where survivors left notes about their own and others' whereabouts to help relatives reunite. Some of these messages are now displayed in the museum, which opened in 2002. A modern structure has replaced The rest of the school building.
Museum Exhibits:
• Survivors' Messages: The primary exhibit features original messages scribbled in chalk on the soot-blackened walls of the staircase by survivors. These messages were initially plastered over after the war but were rediscovered when the plaster was removed. They are preserved as rare evidence of the immediate aftermath of the atomic bombing. Although the original markings are small, they are presented with a blow-up photo taken at the time to provide a clearer impression.
• Basement Artifacts: In the basement, visitors can see two doors with windows that were damaged but withstood the blast, a Taiko drum blown into the schoolyard by the explosion, and a slab of concrete with carbonized traces of wooden beams, illustrating the intense thermal rays and fires caused by the bomb.
• Informative Displays: Text panels in Japanese and English provide detailed information, including excerpts from survivors' testimonies. A large TV screen in the basement shows a 12-minute video with English subtitles. Upstairs, colorful paper cranes and peace messages created by schoolchildren are displayed.

What a terrible sludge of sound the Bach Sinfonia was. Over registered pedal booming out and inarticulate manual playing. Awful. I bet Bach would be turning in his grave !
Remember, these young people are just learning how to play the organ.
This was the principal organist for the Cathedral playing the Bach, not a student!🤔

My husband and I were still living in Groton at that time. My husband was born in the subbase hospital, and my father served on the Fulton from Summer 1979 to 1980/81(he retired). I loved that ship. He used to bring us on-board all the time, when I was in high school.

I spent 4.5 years aboard her from Nov 69 until May 74. The greatest experince of my life. That time launched my career and my future.
My father served on her from 1979 to his retirement in 1980-81. I loved that ship! He used to bring us onboard to have our teeth cleaned and get hair cuts. Had Thanksgiving dinner on her once too. My father was a Lt JG. He served on the Intrepid prio to the Fulton. And served on the USS Decatur during the Cuban Missle Crisis. My husband just found out from his mother, last night, that his grandfather served on the Fulton during WWII. He was a radioman with the Merchant Marines. The Fulton spent time, March 15 thru July 8, 1942, tending Pacific Fleet submarines in Pearl Harbor, and she transported many survivors of the sunken Yorktown back to Pearl Harbor, among a lot of other things she did during the war. I'm super proud of that ship, and a little bummed that she's decommissioned now.
